Some of my favorite tacos around. And I do love me some chicken tacos. Been going here now since they opened and I'm glad they've gotten their menu worked out and added the rotisserie chicken. That chicken is the definition of comfort food on those days when my boss drives me crazy. I love sitting at the bar and tearing into half a chicken like a neanderthal. It's practically medieval…with a side of green salsa. Hint, a place with "Taqueria" in the name isn't burying the lead so stick to the menu items that have "taco" "burrito" or some form of Spanish in their name and you'll be a happy camper. And when you need a smile and friendly face to ask about your day be sure to sit at the bar, guaranteed to brighten even the worst case of the Mondays.
Came here after a run in the park and was looking for quick food. I got the avocado salad (with lemon and olive oil dressing) and a veggie taco (with corn). Both tasted kinda weird, to be honest. Whatever olive oil that they used in the dressing tasted so bad with that salad…. I couldn't even really eat that much of it. And the taco was pretty good actually, it was just missing a dressing of some sort – it was very dry. Lettuce, corn, pico de gallo… and maybe one more ingredient that I'm missing. But all in all you get what you pay for – both of those together was $11. They had other good looking things on the menu, but I wanted something simple. Didn't think a certain type of olive oil could ruin an entire salad! 🙁 Service was fine- the bartender was very friendly.
I've been coming to this location for years, back when it was part of Lincoln Tavern still. Even with the new name and slight makeover, the food is still of the same style as always.
It's a good neighborhood spot to get some Mexican food, but I wouldn't send anybody into the neighborhood just to come here either.
My last visit I had a plate of nachos ($12) which was enough for a light dinner for my friend and I. The home made tortilla chips were definitely the best part and it was overall pretty enjoyable to dine at the bar.
If you're looking to grab a casual meal but not go too far, this is a great place to consider. If you're looking for anything elevated, though, keep heading towards north of Eastern Parkway.
After a long day in the park, I came here with friends to grab a quick bite to go. I had a taco platter with one fish and one shrimp tacos, rice, and beans. Well I got full after the fish taco, which was pretty good. Not the best fish taco I've had but it served it's purpose. The pinto beans and rice were decent as well. If you're in need of a quick fix for Mexican food, this place will get the job done.
After exploring Prospect Park and getting caught in the rain, I found this restaurant using yelp and stopped in for lunch. I sat outside (they don't have a ton of outside seating but it was perfect for a solo lunch) and had one of their lunch specials. I ordered the crispy burrito (veggie) lunch special, which was $10 and came with a canned soda.
The waiter brought out a water and chips and salsa as soon as I sat down. The water had no ice and I was brought a cup but no ice with the soda as well. I didn't ask for ice but it struck me as a little odd in the middle of the summer.
The burrito itself was huge and very tasty. It was packed with rice, beans, and corn. I was asked what type of beans I wanted and I asked for black beans, which the waiter confirmed with me twice. The burrito had pinto beans when I got it. I didn't complain and still very much enjoyed it but if you have an allergy or don't eat certain things you might want to be very specific.
Mehhhh the food here is IGHT. I came with my friend today and although we were looking for a more high energy place we settled down anyway since we traveled for Mexican food before our next class. The music sounded like Lite FM's greatest hits and the crowd was very granola. The menu is vast though, plus the food is cheap which I appreciated. I got a lunch special; an open burrito with mushrooms instead of meat that came with a can of soda. The cheese on my burrito was not melted btw, what's that about?
Yeah, it's a no from me dawg.
After a few months, they seemed to have worked out the new business kinks.
The chips are no longer mysteriously half-stale. Now all of the chips are fresh, crispy, and tasty. The salsa and hot sauces are freshly made by the restaurant. Nothing comes from a jar or bought pre-made. The owner proudly told us how they use fresh tomatoes for the salsa.
I always order the El Barrio burrito with steak and red beans (meat, rice and beans) with a whole wheat tortilla. The steak is of very good quality. I love the rice and beans and could quite frankly eat it very happily all by itself. The burrito is simple, but very good and tasty.
And as always, the service is friendly and cheerful.
If there were a line of folks mourning LPT, I'd be right there at the front of it, but Taqueria El Patron is off to a solid start. What I needed desperately was a lo-fi place to make me feel at home, and this place could just be it.
Taqueria El Patron kept a lot of the LPT decor vibe, but took out the old busted parts and gave the entire space a brighter, cleaner look. Thanks to a family connection, they also have several of the same servers as LPT, which is a huge plus because those dudes are stellar servers.
Okay so atmosphere check, service check, now the food. Its really good! Why is it always the whitest people whose closest connection to Mexico is "that one time they went to Cabo" who complain the most about "non-authentic Mexican food"? This place is owned and operated by Latinos and while I guess they tend to cater to the American palette, the food tastes great and the portions are beyond generous. The fish and shredded chicken tacos were delicious and filling, and the combo comes with a healthy side of rice, beans, and guac. A simple rice/beans/cheese burrito is only $6 and still the same size as LPT used to make 'em. Free round of really flavorful salsa and homemade chips at your table was another big plus.
There are a handful of things that still need to be fixed (like the fact that a side of sour cream is on the menu for $2.75), but I have faith! Now that they're open for brunch the last big thing on the list is the booze, looking forward to margaritas soon I hope!
