Best seller combo: basically 3 california rolls with 2 of them having toppings – spicy scallop and spicy salmon, and an eel roll. It was not what I imagined… usually they're inside the rolls instead of being just on top…
Bowl with assorted sashimi: it was okay, with uni and scallop and salmon and some squid…
They speak canto here! Bathroom is clean.
The restaurant is kinda small and cramped. But the food is pretty good for the price. You can get a bowl topped with assorted sashimi for $14. They also have a really good crazy scallop roll.
There's a good variety of food on the menu. If you don't like sushi, they also have hot food such as seafood pancake, ramen, katsu, etc.
I used to go there a lot more often when they first opened back in 2011, they served such good food at great prices, since there's no other Japanese restaurant in the area that served specialty Japanese dishes like they do. But I have to admit that even though the owner was a friend's friend, we were always greeted with the worst attitude. I love the food so I sucked it up and still ate there often, since it's two blocks from where I used to live and I started advertising for them as my "cafeteria" on Facebook.
Their salmon set is the biggie on the menu, you get salmon sashimi, salmon sushi, salmon teriyaki and salmon rolls, all for $20. It's super fresh, very tasty, nobody could beat that. They do very interesting appetizers too, takoyaki, okonomiyaki, seasoned sweet potato fries, fried squid bellies, etc. You name it.
And they constantly update their menu throughout the years, I love their sushi with uni, ikura and ika all together, sometimes topped with scallops. I stopped going after some of our friends left the business, I believe the chef changed, the host changed and servers all left.
I ordered a dinner cater over the New Year's weekend for my dad's birthday, which consisted of all the big sets with a lot of sashimi, sushi and specialty rolls, the host was very nice, he let me take a picture of the menu since they had no take-out menus printed at the moment, he also suggested that I call ahead of time, so I did and when I got there about 20 mins late, they had everything prepared and ready for me.
The meal was spectacular, I was pretty satisfied with the service now that I don't get an attitude anymore. It's definitely still one of the best Japanese restaurants in the area.
I always pass by this place and have always wanted to try it out so when my friend asked me to hang out with her today, I decided to choose this place for lunch. Bad decision…At most restaurants that I've been to, I usually complain about either the decor or the service and rave about the food but here, it was the complete opposite. Contrary to what most reviewers say, I actually thought the service here was really nice. Decor is small and dark but the plates/utensils seemed fairly clean. As for the food…a complete disaster…We ordered the 2 most popular dishes which are:
Best seller combo- I honestly don't know how anyone in their right mind could say that this is good sushi…it was horrible! I just had ayce sushi buffet like 2 days ago and the quality was way better than the rolls here! You know you have a problem when all the rolls taste the same…Honestly, if it didn't list which rolls are in this combo on the menu, I would've never been able to figure out what each roll was (ok maybe I'm not that stupid but you get the point). The eel roll was not fresh at all and the rice was stale. For the California roll, the rice was mushy and tasted like rice you would serve in a bowl for dinner. The spicy salmon roll did not have the texture of what spicy salmon should taste like and the spicy scallop roll tasted like nothing…
Stuffed squid with crab- Bland!!! If it wasn't for the soy sauce that they drizzle on it, I'm sure it would've been completely flavorless. Texture of the squid was alright but the imitation crab stuffed inside was…I don't even know a good way to describe it besides not good.
I hate giving 1 star reviews, especially when the service is nice. But the food here really was not good. We ended up paying $13 each, which isn't bad, but after eating 1 piece of everything, I really didn't want to finish the rest of what we ordered because nothing tasted good…Won't be back 🙁
If you stick to the pork belly ($5) and tonkotsu ramen ($10), then you'll have an ok meal.
Do not get the takoyaki ($5) — it was the worst I ever had. It tasted like it was from a package, cooked, then recooked, absolutely terrible. Soggy on the inside and wrinkly and chewy on the outside.
The katsu don ($8) also tasted like it was reheated and it was grossly sweet. The egg made it taste like mush.
The pork belly skewers were simple, a bit chewy though. The ramen isn't really ramen — the broth is oddly white, and the noodles aren't the right ones. But the pork slices were tender and seasoned well, and the egg was fine. Just think of it as noodle soup and it will be ok.
The restaurant is not the cleanest. The utensils and water cups feel dirty, and the chairs are worn. The service is curt and mostly cold.
Came here years ago and was extremely disappointed in the food. Recently my sister in law brought me ramen take out from here and it was really good. They sure have improved a lot. The broth was savory, flavorful and hearty. We decided to come here for lunch with hubby and my two kids. The pork ramen is highly recommended, the black sesame ramen is not so much.
Place is tight so I was glad we didn't bring our strollers.
Let's start with the bad service once we walked in. Told us to just sit down at the table. It was extremely cold that day and the table was by the door, so we wanted another table. Seeing customers from another table leaving, we asked if we could sit there instead. The guy by the counter/cash register was giving us an attitude, saying well you gotta let us clean it first. We just asked if we could sit at that table, we know you have to clean it, we wouldn't want to sit at a dirty table anyways. When we moved towards that table, we were like scolded not to sit yet.
Now that that's aside, let's talk about the food. I have to be fair, despite that guy's bad welcome, the fish and food were fresh and on point. We ordered the tako wasabi, takoyaki, sashimi special, Hokkaido bowl, and best seller combo. The tako wasabi was okay with a strong wasabi taste, so if wasabi is something you like, that's your choice. You can put the tako on seaweed and wrap it to eat. The takoyaki tasted a lot better than I expected it probably because it was the only food that was hot/warm. (It was so good we ordered another one towards the end.) I really liked best seller combo, $12 for 4 rolls and also because I love the spicy salmon and scallops spread over two of the rolls. The other two rolls were just regular plain rolls. But the scallop overruled. The sashimi special was fresh, everything was fresh from shrimp to salmon to scallop to the uni. And for the amount of food in that special, $21 was a good price. The Hokkaido bowl was more fresh fish served in a bowl with seaweed over another bowl of rice. Once again the uni and scallops were really fresh and had this nice fresh sweetness to it.
Overall I loved the food here and I said I would come back again for sure. Hopefully the waiters will be more welcoming and nicer next time around. It's a nice small space, good for small groups of friends or family. I will definitely go back and try other things on the menu.

Do you believe this place, which is fairly small AND cheap, is even better than a high end sushi restaurant? Ok maybe not those $$$$ sushi restaurants but it was definitely more worth it than Ki Sushi. If you read my review for Ki Sushi, I was definitely not impressed or pleased with my experience but this place definitely got me wanting more.
We ordered the sashimi special ($21) which was super worth it for more than 20 different types of sashimi (peep my picture), best seller combo (spicy salmon), which had four rolls of sushi for only $12!!!, tako wasabi ($6), tako yaki which comes in six ($5), and hokkaido sashimi bowl ($16). It can literally feed 6 of me with all this food for only $60!!!!!! Yes all those exclamation marks are needed. YOU MUST GO AND TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. Even if it may not satisfy you because you had top notch sushi before, this is still worth it for its price!
BUT beware – the person sitting by the door wasn't very nice. It's definitely the way he was brought up but if all you do is focus on how amazing the sushi is, then you're good. The sushi is super fresh you can literally taste each and every one of them closing your eyes. They have really distinctive taste to each one and that's how good sushi should taste. Close your eyes the entire meal to taste the goodness and block out the rudeness and you get yourself a 5 star experience.
