Dos Toros Taqueria
“Dos Toros is only similar to Chipotle in the sense that their menu is basic and includes bowls, salads, quesadillas, and burritos.”
“There are actually two serving stations – the one single line splits into two different counters where the staff will put together your food, so the line moves twice as quickly.”
“If you work in Midtown East you know the lunch options are minimal and you're probably already tired of going to the same old places.”

I came here a few weeks ago, about 7 months after my initial review. I think a lot of my comments still apply. Tortilla's are not grilled long enough, flavor is bland. Steak is smoky, but doesn't have the savory/flavor to take it to the next level. Throughput is also kind of slow compared to another Mexican grill.
Let me preface this by saying I'm not a fan of Mexican food so it's a huge deal to get 4 out of 5 stars from me.
Dos Toros is essentially like Chipotle but better flavors. There is something about their ingredients that makes me actually want to get it occasionally. The line is ridiculously long all the time, but it moves fast.
Make sure to speak loud enough for them to hear your order. Look at the menu beforehand so you're ready when they are.
I got myself a good o'l double steak Plato with everything and guac and bruh when I say bruh it's like my taste buds went to heaven. The steak was tender and chewy and combined with the melted cheese and guac hit a Homerun in my tummy. I recommend trying carne asada, you would regret it especially this is a high protein meal.
Love love love dos toros! The steak burrito is the best! I was so happy when this location opened which is close to the office. There's a chipotle and tres cranes close by too but will no longer be visiting those places since this place is now here! For the burrito, as they are warming up the tortilla, they will also melt a slice of cheese before they add in all the fillings. This little touch make a world of a difference to me. Also their steak is so delicious and tender. If I wasn't trying to go on a diet for the summer I would be here everyday!
They don't give you much – just a tad bit over a half of what Chipotle gives you. I used to eat Chipotle on cheat snack days (yes, as a snack, and I know that's a serious issue I won't deal with). I walked by this the other day and decided to grab a bite since the line wasn't too long.
We all know that the amount of food is pretty important when you're at a fast food joint. After all, we're not trying to really save calories by taking one rather than two scoops of sour cream – how hopelessly realistic would that be?
The food was just ok. The lettuce seemed a bit old, and the puny amount of guac was not very impressive. The hot sauce was pretty good but having to choose between onions OR corn was a bit ridiculous. I was just about to say corn and she just pushed it down and then to the next person, asked, "onions or corn?" – which told me that it's one or the other. REALLY? For a $10 meal, I felt pretty skimped. There's better deals in the area and I should've gone for a food cart deal with that money instead (but was out of cash today).
I just have no praises to sing for this place – there's plenty of seating if you're there early but get ready to run around for utensils. The one closest to the door had no forks so I was rummaging through the middle stations just for one fork.
I like Chipotle too but when in Manhattan I prefer Dos Toros since I find them more fresh and better seasoned. Since this location was close to where I was staying I stopped by during lunch hour and due to their efficiency the line moved very quick despite the crowd.
But due to efficiency you are hurried and they don't even make proper contact or try to confirm your requests. So I guess there is a bit of learning curve at this location since it's so busy central compared to the other location I frequented few years back. It was disappointing to see the staff roll their eyes after the customer in front of me dared to asked to add something after the bowl already went forward.
For my order I was a bit let down by the quantity of food since I remember them piling on everything before but this time everything was a quick scoop even for the extra guacamole. But the taste was good as I remember and I finished till the last grain of rice.
Grand opening was packed with $1 deal for any item and the serving was fully loaded. Friendly service and very well operated to take on the long lines of hungry people.
Food was solid, fresh and yumm-o
Dos Toros or Chipotle? Another food fuel of which place does it better.
Hands down, I would say that Dos Toros is much better than Chipotle, although I'm not exactly sure why or even how I can justify it. Maybe it's fresher ingredients? The grilled meat?!
That being said, Dos Toros' rice actually has color and flavor as it's orangey yellow compared to Chipotle's rice with just cilantro. Probably because they actually boil their rice, who knows. Then, the meat is always juicy and not dry. The only thing that Chipotle has that Dos Toros doesn't have is corn, which I missed at first, but I've learned to sacrifice corn for better ingredients! One more thing, the lines at Dos Toros always move a lot quicker than the Chiptole lines. Who ever wants to wait in line for fast food?
Tip: If you want extra rice, make sure you ask after they give you your protein. It's free of charge!
