  1. Tortaria really puts the casual in fast casual — v loud, runs partially on a self-serve/grab and go model, employees can be kind of lax if you have table service — but it's great for what it is and I've never had any major complaints.

It's my local go-to for Mexican and the food itself is pretty decent. Solid tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, chimichangas and bowl/sandwich options … not to mention the tortas. The rice and beans are run of the mill and the guac is rather tasty for its being served in a plastic container. Bonus: strong margs with a variety of fruit flavor options (and not too pricey, either)!

Drawbacks are typical and expected: can be hard to get decent seating, volume (as mentioned above), crowded/easy to get a little lost in the shuffle, bathrooms are neither convenient nor very clean. However, I've come to Tortaria by myself for take out and with my parents, friends and boyfriend at various times and all have enjoyed it. Haters to the left — I'll keep my cheap/convenient neighborhood spot for myself!

  2. I was in the mood for Mexican food so I decided to try this spot out.
From the outside in this looks like a full on restaurant but really you order your food in the front and grab a seat. If you need something after that you can ask one of the handful of people walking around and they will get it. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and a coconut margarita. The food was good but I thought the portion size was on the smaller side. I was still hungry after finishing. The drink was rather on the smaller side as well, a small cup with a ton of ice. I was told that the fish tacos were good so maybe I will try that next time. Overall this is a probably a cool spot for lunch but I would not come here again for dinner. This is a young crowd 20's-30's and its very laid back and chill.

  3. Oh my god, can the bar service here get ….any…..sl..ow…e…r.
It was easier to find seats on a packed Thursday evening than to get a drink.

Eventually that obviously worked itself out, but the tolerance level of waiting was getting pretty low before the order came out.

House margaritas are solid, not the best I've ever had obvs but major points for being on the strong side. The chips & guac are also good & fresh and yes, the small is in fact, small, but it makes for a decent app with the drinks. The 3 sauces they have lying around also nicely served as the extra dip for the chips that came in a large brown paper bag.

Overall: just OK. Disorganized for my liking.

  4. I left this place wondering how can this place be called "Tortaria" when they served me a sloppy chicken sandwich. I didn't get a torta. I got your average sandwich that you can find at a diner or deli. The service was slow, even during the day when it was pretty empty. The only thing I enjoyed in all honesty was the Mexican Coke.

    The decor is fabulous, though.

  5. If anything stood out in particular here, it was the decor!  You got some red/yellow/green fairy lights by the cashier, and some super colorful flowers against a bright turquoise wall – the vibes there just make the dining experience so much happier!  Contrary to most people, I went for the kale and avocado salad, which was pretty good, although for it's price you're better off getting their other mains.  Chips and Guac for 2 had more than enough chips for 2, but not enough dip!!

  6. I've been here twice and wasn't blown away by the food, service or atmosphere either time. The portions are small, it's really noisy for such a small place, and the layout of the spot makes it hard to hear when your food is ready at the counter. El Cantinero is a few doors down and it's hands-down a better alternative.

On the plus side, they have some pretty good Maragritas (think raspberry chile passion).

  7. Decent breakfast bowls, nothing really to write home about though. Guac was good, made fresh to order. Chips were overly salted. Bloody Mary was chipotle and when I didn't like it they gladly replaced it with a margarita. Thanks!

  8. EPIC killer grilled shrimp fajitas and guac.  I seem to migrate here when in the city.  Love the food, love the buzz.  This has become my go to lunch spot when in the union square area.  I strongly suggest a visit.
