I really loved this place. My sister brought me here for lunch because they have chips and queso which, while a staple in the south, is not so easy to find in NYC. The chips were crispy and the white queso dip was the right amount of spicy. We had the pork enchiladas and we really enjoyed them. Very good flavor. It was definitely enough food for both between the queso and the enchiladas. The service was outstanding and the restaurant and bathrooms were extremely clean. I want to come back for more delicious food and to have drinks!
I was looking forward to trying this place, but overall I was unimpressed. The drinks were excellent, the service was terrific, the food – just OK. Everything just seemed average and underwhelming. It's too bad, because there isn't a whole lot of this type of cuisine in the area and I would have liked to have a go-to spot.
Get the queso, get the cocktails (if you get the negroni, ask them to hold the campari – it's too heavy on the bitters otherwise – but sans campari you've got yourself a winner).
The food was fine, but the winner here is the queso.
I was in Houston earlier this year but apparently failed to have proper Tex Mex there. In an effort to right that wrong I came to Javelina but probably should have just waited for my next trip to Texas.
In any case, the meal was decent but nothing was spectacular. I will admit the Queso was VERY good, but it's literally just melted cheese so I don't know how that could be not good? Who doesn't like melted cheese?
By the time mains rolled around I had effectively gorged myself on half a cup of cheese so wasn't too hungry but probably lucky for me. We shared a bunch of items at the table – fish tacos, pork tacos, DIY fajitas, enchiladas and nothing really stood out…of those items my favorite is probably the fajitas, which come with warm tortillas and a sizzling platter of veggies and meat (we chose half and half shrimp and beef). Ironically our first container of tortillas arrived EMPTY (what a tease) but this was quickly rectified by our waitress who was super sweet and attentive.
Drinks were pretty strong and even though we skipped dessert, they brought out some fried donuts on the house. Maybe to make up for the missing fajitas? In any case, a worthy trade since the fried donuts were delicious.
This place is pretty good for groups though, and the cuisine is neutral enough that everyone can find something to eat here.
After desperately searching for a good Mexican restaurant in New York City I was really happy when this place opened up. Everybody was talking about it and we decided to give it a chance. It was so hard to get a reservation here in the beginning when it first opened. And it's still kind of hard so definitely call in advance if you're going on a busy night.
I think the main thing I have to say here is that the queso here is life changing –it is so freaking good! We got the queso sampler which includes the choice of three different quesos. Each and every single one of them was so good. There is one that was my favorite I think it's called the mad mug. It includes guacamole pico de gallo and black beans. It is amazing.
Normally I would give it a 4-star rating because the rest of the food on the menu is just OK and they don't heat up the cheese when it gets cold BUT the cheese is so amazing and my mouth is watering even thinking about it that I'm forced to give a 5-star rating.
We also got the enchiladas which were decent nothing to write home about. The avocado tacos I would recommend though it was pretty delicious. I often visit this restaurant and usually just get the queso sampler and the tacos and I am a happy girl.
Jim Bob's Breakfast Tacos.. excellent.
Bob Armstrong – queso dip.. excellent.
Service.. excellent.
What else could you ask from a restaurant? Went on a Saturday afternoon and found that they had a special brunch menu. I love breakfast food, but I was hoping to have some authentic Mexican or TexMex. As it turned out, the breakfast tacos were really good and filling. The queso dip that I ordered was also excellent, although I could slowly feel my arteries becoming clogged and my butt cheeks sinking into the seat from the weight.
The service was also excellent, although the place wasn't full. The servers really made sure that you were taken care of by providing their recommendations and refilling my water.
Overall, I'm very pleased and this will be my go-to Mexican place when I'm in the area.
Good place for Tex-mex! Came here for brunch on a Saturday. They give you free chips and salsa right off the bat which was pretty good. I got the breakfast taco with eggs and chorizo which was cheesy and filling. A little too greasy but good otherwise. When they got busier, service was a little slow in terms of checking on is for the check but we ordered and got our food in a timely manner.
Came here a few weeks ago and got a solid Tex-Mex meal. We started with the queso which was loaded with beans, cheese and a bit of guac. It was delicious, gotta love a good queso. We also started with the chips, salsa and guac which was also a hit. As an entree, I got the fish tacos which were very yummy. Not the absolute best tacos I've ever had, but a very solid meal. The fish was well seasoned and the taco shells were soft with lots of corn flavor. Definitely would love to come back here, I'd like to try some of the drinks as well.
