Ramen Yebisu

“To be fair, I am not a ramen guru, and I am also a vegetarian, so the only thing on their menu I vouch for is the veggie miso ramen.”

“Definitely a great ramen place if you're in Williamsburg or want to try a different style of ramen.”

“When we finally got to the ramen part, she said that miso, shoyu and the Abura soba were outstanding in the menu.”

  1. Despite the lukewarm reviews, I actually really enjoyed this place! The waiters were very friendly and recommended items to us, allowed us to customize and substitute things in the ramen, and the service was generally great!

I usually like tonkatsu pork broth, but the extra spicy ramen here was a clear soy broth which I actually really enjoyed! It wasn't the super traditional type of ramen that you have at some of the more well known Manhattan ramen joints, but having had my fair share of ramen, I still really enjoyed it!

  2. Came here on the first day it snowed in the city. This place is really cute and clean. There's bar seating where you can watch the chefs put the ramen together, but there is also table seating.

I got the shoyu ramen and my friend got the miso (we both added an egg too). The shoyu was very clean, but kinda of lacked flavor. My friend's miso was very good and had more flavor and dimension. I really wanted to try the Aruba, but it was so cold out I wanted something with broth, maybe next time I'm in the area!

*Cash only (they have an atm machine by the entrance)

  3. Ramen Yebisu has been on my to-do list for quite some time ever since I saw it featured on some NYC ramen best-of list. I ended up ordering the shoyu ramen, which according to the menu was Michelin 2014's pick for best shoyu. It was good, but had some faults. The roast pork was bland and the broth was a little too watery, even for shoyu. Noodles were nice and springy though. Went well with a nice Orion. Keep in mind that it's cash only! Good thing everything's pretty cheap.

  4. A seafood ramen is not something I would usually think to get, but I was intrigued by Yebisu's namesake dish, which according to a sign is only served in limited amounts daily til it's out. Besides the fact that it's special and limited edition, it's actually really tasty. It's a seafood broth and is chock full of treasures from the sea, including an entire crab leg, juicy prawns, and lots of mussels. At $17 it's not a cheap lunch by any means, and made more complicated by the fact that Yebisu is cash only. But it's plenty satisfying and really well-made – a truly high quality dish and not an afterthought that they threw in for random non-pork eaters that wander in.

The space is super tiny and a bit cramped — I was eating at the counter and had to adjust every time someone tried to get by — but I kind of liked the compact, dark space as it reminded me of casual ramen joints in Tokyo. Go for an early lunch to avoid too much crowding and to make sure you get your hands on this yummy seafood dish!

  5. Walked into Yebisu on  Monday evening during a heat wave. WHY IS THERE NO AIR CONDITIONING. If I knew ahead of time I would NOT come here. Are they serious? Don't be cheap, TURN ON THE AIR CONDITIONING! WTF!

I wanted to leave but I really didn't have much time before I had to go to a concert. Where am I going to get a meal in less than half an hour?! So I just beared with the 90+ degree weather at a ramen joint in Brooklyn. I got the Shoyu ramen. I realized that it is really difficult to enjoy ramen when it feels like 90+ degrees inside a ramen joint. It doesn't matter if I ordered hot or cold ramen, it's hot in Yebisu and not in a good way.

I opted to add a poached egg, +$2 to the Shoyu ramen because if I didn't, it doesn't have much in the ramen itself. The Shoyu ramen is served in a soy sauce based soup with a thin piece of roasted pork, bamboo shoots, scallion and a sheet of toasted seaweed. I don't like scallions at all so I asked them to omit it.

There is nothing in this ramen. They are skimpy with the meat portion. The pork actually was delicious, moist and I wanted more. And the soup didn't even really have that much ramen noodles. Maybe it was the unbearably hot conditions in the restaurant that was putting me in a bad mood. I don't know but I didn't enjoy the ramen. Are they skimping on the air conditioning and the portions too??!! Come on, give me a break here! TURN ON THE AIR CONDITIONING and throw mama a bone here…..one to two more slices of pork for the price you're charging for ramen, since the pork is so thin and include at least half an egg. Wow…please. If not, I can't recommend this place.

  6. Great little place if you're looking for a warm bowl of Ramen in Williamsburg. My friend was in town and had never eaten Ramen, so I wanted to get her some before she left. We happened to be in the area and stumbled upon Ramen Yebisu. We were seated right away are the bar/counter and looked over the menu. It isn't too overwhelming, but there is a nice variety of Ramen options. We shared the fried dumplings and had the Shio and Miso Ramen. Very decent Ramen!

The atmosphere is cramped, but the food comes out super quickly, so you don't have to stay long. It's also cash only, so remember to have cash on you! Service was nice and speedy. Overall I like this place for a simple, inexpensive Ramen in Brooklyn!

  7. Don't go out of your way to eat here. If for some reason you were in the area and had a fancy for ramen and only ramen, eat here. It won't be the end of the world or anything. A little mediocre ramen won't kill you!

  8. 3.25 to be exact.

Coming into Ramen Yebishu they really do a good job with their ambiance.  I really like how the interior looks as they utilize their space wisely.

I came here with a group and we shared a bunch of appetizers that included the fried dumplings, edamame, and pork buns.  The fried dumplings and edamame were average, with the best appetizer being the pork buns.  I have definitely had better pork buns but they are not bad here.  They give you the dish with the bread separate from the pork, egg, and sauce so you put it together yourself.  Do not try to take too much pork for yourself and shaft the person who is having the other bun!

As for the main course, I would come here if I was craving a bowl of their Spicy Abura Soba,  That is the one dish I really enjoyed here!  I liked the spiciness in this dish and it definitely added to the flavor.  I was able to try some of my friends' bowls, the Shoyu and Shio ramens and thought they were just average.  The broth was not as flavorful as I expected but I would not mind having it.  However, like I mentioned, if you do not mind brothless ramen and some spice, get the Spicy Abura Soba.

FYI: This place is cash only but at least they have an ATM at the entrance!
