Toyo Japanese Cuisine

“While a little pricey, I found Toyo's fish to seem incredibly fresh and of good quality – with sushi I don't mind paying a little extra to know I'm getting quality.”

“In a neighborhood rid of any praise-worthy restaurants (with exception of Uvarara) it delivers consistent quality with it's succulent sushi selection.”

“The place is beautifully decorated and with it's big comfy chairs and dim lighting it looks and feel's super cozy.”

  1. Sushi is very fresh along with everything else. Delivery was prompt and precise. Probably the best tasting scallion pancakes I have had. Nice and crispy and chewy in the center. They were just perfect. There Udon and Soba dishes were great and have ordered that a few times already. Didn't try the Japanese style fried rice yet. I will be sure to try that next very soon. Totally recommend this place!

  2. This restaurant is better than not having a sushi place in Middle Village. The sushi is hit or miss and even when it is good you know its not the most expensive fish you are eating – the prices reflect that. Fair price for fair quality sushi. The shrimp tempora rolls are generous with two shrimps inside, most places I've been to only put one and this place has done that on occasion. Soba noodles are decent – is the broth supposed to be that bland? Nice collection of appetizers – I enjoy the Dragon Eyes and the Kani Salad.

The decor is nice and simple inside with plenty of wood paneling and dark furniture. It also has some weird pop music  playing in the background. I mostly have food delivered.

If you live in the area it is nice to have a nearby place to go to and order from, but don't make a special trip.

  3. Pretty solid choice on Metropolitan Ave.

There isn't much competition in that area as far as non fast food/takeout places. We had about 90 minutes to get dinner and wanted full service so here's where we landed.

The veggie sushi menu is so basic, you kind of can't believe you're in New York. I wasn't thrilled with any of the 3 boring choices, so I opted for my usual cucumber/avocado roll. The only other thing for vegetarians is the ever present tofu teriyaki, but I didn't want to chance butter in my dish and I don't really love teriyaki sauce either. The rolls are fine, edible, not amazing. Recently I've had bad sushi (ie, the rice is gross and the seaweed is too fishy/chewy) so this actually tasted pretty good, if not the most exciting thing I've eaten in a while. That said, I do expect more from a Japanese restaurant in New York City.

My dining partners seemed to really like their rolls. Thank god I asked for mine to be separate because at least one of their rolls was so fishy smelling, I was close to losing my appetite. I'm assuming it was whatever contained cooked eel. I'm not used to sushi ever smelling like fish, but they didn't complain, so I'm guessing everything tasted fine.

The best thing, though: they have my favorite sparkling sake that comes in the pink bottle! Ozeki Hana Awaka.

The worst thing: they have a huge flat screen TV in the dining room. The news was turned on and let's face it, the news these days is not what you want to be watching during dinner, if ever. Police brutality. Police murders. Protests. Terrorist attacks… come on! You're not supposed to ever eat when stressed and this about ruined the meal. I wish restaurants would pay more attention to such things.

  4. Toyo Japanese Cusine is a very nice, clean, little restaurant.  I stopped here with friends on a Saturday afternoon.  We were quickly greeted and guided to a table close to the sushi area.  After a few minutes, we each ordered several different rolls – there were like 30+ different specialty roles from which to choose.  We each ordered 1-2 rolls and the one guy making sushi made them much more quickly than I had anticipated – kudos to him!  I ordered the Tiger Roll and some other kind of roll and both were pretty tasty, although it was definitely more food than I should have ordered – I couldn't eat it all!  After this, we sort of lost our waitress.  We were done for a loooooooooooooooong time and she never ever came back.  We had to get the attention of a young girl who seemed to also be working there in order to get our check and pay so that we could move along with our day.  I am not sure what happened, but it made an otherwise good experience just so-so.
