  1. My roommates and I stopped in here for late night dinner and drinks. It's tapas style Mexican food that specializes in tequila-based drinks. We ordered the guacamole trio to start, which contains a traditional, verde, and a spicy pineapple style. For entrees, we decided to each order Tacos as our entrees. Two of us had fish tacos and the other two had shrimp tacos. The food was delicious and was the perfectly cooked and seasoned.

The ambience was very trendy. We also enjoyed the open windows, as the night was perfect for that type of experience. Service is why i knocked stars off. Our waiter came over right away to give us water and check in. We ordered guacamole, but he left before we had a chance to get drinks. We then sat for a long time and had to flag a bus boy to get someone to come over for drinks. The bottom line is we sat for an inordinate amount of time between orders and no one checked on us after our food did arrive.

Overall, the food was the best part. I enjoyed the tacos and would probably try one of the other options they had.

  2. Dined here with two girlfriends and here's the quick run down- dangerous margaritas, crispy, flavorful fish tacos & delicious guacamole with a twist. After being a resident of Hell's Kitchen for nearly a year, it was my first time dining on tenth avenue (believe it or not) and Añejo's did not disappoint!

  3. Never stopped by this popular restaurant due to the fact there are three cheaper Mexican options within a half block of this place. Saw that they had interesting brunch options so got a table on a Sunday afternoon.

After a boozy Saturday, wasn't going to have the alcohol deal. Started off with the Spicy Pineapple Guacamole ($11) to share. A small portion of guacamole topped with a sweet pineapple chunk sauce. Tasted good, and served with large tortilla halved, wish there was more of it. For the meal, ordered the Chicken Chilaquiles ($13) – shredded chicken, veggies, salsa, cheese, tortilla, and a fried egg within one bowl. A big collaboration of flavor that's similar to huevos rancheros, just in a different format.

Overall a good spot for higher-end Mexican food. Would try again for the brunch pre-fixe if I have it in me.

  4. I've been back here for dinner three times in the last month now. On a Saturday night with a group of 5, on a (quiet) Monday night with just 3 & on a busy Saturday night without reservations for 2.

I would definitely recommend having reservations on weekends as it's a popular neighborhood spot & gets busy.

    Service:
Staff has always been friendly & efficient. They take good care of you. The last time we were here without reservations on Saturday the hostess was very nice about accommodating us even though they did need the table back by a certain time. Which we certainly didn't mind as we had a few more stops to make after dinner. A smile & politeness will get you further than a bad attitude. The first time here we ordered Yuca Frito sides and the kitchen got really delayed (forgot?) in sending those out so we told the server we no longer wanted them but the manager that evening brought them out for us anyway, on-the-house.

    Ambiance:
    Warm, rustic, casual.

    Food we've had:
Guacamole Trio (we all liked the Verde Guacamole the best). Rabbit Mole, Steak Tacos (YUM), Octopus was delicious, Esquites (corn-YUM), Brussels Sprouts & Yuca Frito. Everything was well prepared and everyone was happy with their food.

The Spicy Jalapeño margarita is absolutely delicious!!! My favorite!

From a price point, it is certainly not one of the inexpensive Mexican spots, more like mid-range I would say, and portions are medium, so need to order a few things. But over a good experience so far.

  5. My review is based on our experience during Saturday brunch. Our meal was exceptional from beginning to end. Our server was attentive but not over-bearing. The ambiance is cozy and hip. My dining companion and I both had brunch plates which include 3 bloody marys, sangrias, or margaritas for a fixed price of $29. We both had the plata margaritas which were delicious and not at all watered down. Next we tried the the salsa sampler. I loved the fresh made chips, the habanero salsa, and the roja sala. Lastly we had the heuvos rancheros and Mexican omelette. Both were perfectly seasoned and delicious. The kitchen was also willing to make my side of potatoes vegetarian style (i.e., without chorizo).

  6. Anejo is a solid brunch spot that offers up drink specials and a meal on the lighter side. They really do to stick to the tapas size so if you're looking for more bang for your buck, order the huevos rancheros or the chilaquiles. I usually order the breakfast tacos and you get two small tacos that are delicious but certainly won't fill you up all by itself. You definitely should start with some guacamole but why am I telling you things you already know?…  Each meal comes with three drinks, margarita and/or sangria to really round out your entire brunch. The margaritas are really good and they pack a punch so don't get up from the that table too fast.

  7. Solo night out in NYC. I decided to eat my dinner at Anejo based on a friend's recommendation and the fact it was only a few steps from my hotel.

My cocktail, the Pimm's Copita, prepared with the excellent Pierde Almas Plus 9 Botanicals mezcal-gin was simply fantastic. One of the great cocktails I've tasted, a great balance between the smokiness of the mezcal, the sweetness from Pimm's and the sourness from the tamarind mexican soda. It was the highlight of the night.

Unfortunately, the rest of the meal hasn't been as exciting.

The food wasn't bad per se, but perhaps at this price level I was expecting to be more excited about it. but there was nothing memorable about the plates I've had.

The totopos were great but the salsa was ordinary, it could have been more spiced. The ahi tuna ceviche lacked flavor, it could have been more forward with the citrus flavors. The braised queso fresco was good but felt a bit alone in its broth with nothing to eat it with. The short ribs tacos were the tastiest of my meal, but definitely not worth the price asked for them. Finally, the molote was flavourful, but perhaps only because of the topping as the molote itself seemed like all dough and little filling.

The service itself was uneven as well. The nice young lady who took my order was very sweet and attentive. I was brought the first two plates way too fast, barely minutes after my arrival. Then it took a very long time to get my third and fourth plate (the time between the third and fourth was about 30 minutes). The busboy who cleared out the tables was too expeditive as well… I had barely finished with the plates that he promptly removed them from my table. I had not finished with the totopos.

The atmosphere was great. Beautiful restaurant, great lighting, beautiful bar. No complaints here.

Finally, the $$ rating on Yelp is a bit misleading. Because of the portions size and the amount of plates required, this would be more a $$$ restaurant.

So overall, it was an uneven experience. If it had been a cheaper restaurant, I wouldn't have been as severe, but at this price range (over $100 for one person), I was expecting more. Welcome to NYC, I guess.

  8. Atsmophere: Full bar seating with high top seating as well as regular tables. Friendly staff. They did take awhile to tend to us even though it wasn't that busy, but perhaps they were preparing for the Friday night crowd.

Drinks: We got the Mole Noche and the Jalapeno Margarita. The Mole had a little kick to it with a rich flavor. The Jal Marg was SUPER SPICY but delish! Jal marg is on the HH menu!

FOOD: Get the chips and salsa. They have a bunch of options to select from and it's on the HH menu.
