  1. I heard about increasing numbers of immigrants from South America to this area, when I was looking for a place to eat for dinner, I searched for any restaurants from South America.

This was my first time eating Columbian food at restaurant but I had some Columbian food made by my Columbian friends in the past and always enjoyed the food.

Not knowing the area, I called first to make sure they are open for dinner on this particular night I visited. Since the person answered the phone didn't speak English, took us a while to confirm one fact if they were open.

When I first walked in, looking all confused (it was from my parking, not restaurant but they didn't know why I looked confused), they told me this was Columbian restaurant and they wanted to make sure I wanted to eat Columbian food.

They have both English and Spanish menu available and when I was ordering, she had Spanish menu in her hand to make sure what I was ordering in English was what she thought it was in Spanish. A kind customer spoke both language fluently assisted us in communication and I was able to order traditional Columbian food.  I noticed other bilingual customers did the same. She would ask other bilingual customers to assist non Spanish speaking customers. All seemed to be happy to help her, which I thought it was good sign about her and restaurants.

Food was very good, very generous portions. I couldn't finish eating everything as it was so much but I enjoyed every bite of bandeja paisa.  Guava with milk was sweet and good too.

I practiced my Spanish a little and successfully ordered a bottle of still water, complimented on food, and asked for check.

Great authentic Columbian food, friendly service with nice smiles, I would definitely come back for more next time I am in town.

  2. Had lomo saltado with rice and green salad, tostones soup and soda, lunch special bill was $9. Waitress was very friendly and the candy after the meal is a nice touch. Food was ok, I found meat to be hard to chew and rice was mushy but flavor wise it was good. Portions were not huge compared to many other places on Morris Avenue.. I actually ate everything and I am far from a big eater.I don't know if I would come here again because it was forgettable.

  3. The big upside of coming to Elizabeth monthly for work is the opportunity to explore the ever expanding South American community, and especially the restaurants of the various nations/cultures that fill the streets of this city.

Yesterday, I drove over to Morris Street to find La Gloria, which has so many excellent reviews on Yelp.  I found it easily, had to park with the curb wheels in the hard packed snow, and entered about 1:30 in the afternoon.  First impressions were of a small café with a bar against one wall, and tables mid floor and on the opposite wall.  There were a few people sitting and eating, but for the most part the place was quiet, but for the 3 HDTVs on the walls tuned to Columbian TV.

The staff was friendly and very attractive.  We quickly realized that my Spanish and their English left much to be desired, still we seemed to enjoy the challenge and figured out what they suggested for lunch.  Grilled Chicken in a mild clear citrus sauce, Salad, Fried Plantain and White Rice on one large platter, plus a bowl of Frijole Soup.  A small glass container of Salsa arrived and I spooned some into the soup and onto the chicken to add a kick.  It was all very good.  The chicken was a fresh thin breast, the greens were likewise recently in the ground, and the plaintain was pleasantly browned and sweet with its recognizable starchy texture.  The soup was very tasty and it was easy to imagine it doing good things within.

The biggest surprise was the café latte after the meal.  It was wonderfully rich tasting coffee that needed no sugar.  It was strong, but not bitter, and every sip was a smile.  The small cup was only a buck, and was way better than what Star$$$$ has to offer.

All this came to only $9, and I did not need dinner last night.

Can't wait for my next visit to Elizabeth.  The work in court may be taxing, but the prize afterwards is worth the trial and tribulation.

  4. This is THE place for our colleague's birthdayday celebration year after year. So you know it has to be good, and it is! We enjoyed the good service, though it started off pretty funny. My friend speaks Spanish and so the waitress thought we could all speak Spanish and so brought us Spanish menu which we couldn't read. She had to go back for the English version. And our company couldn't have been more diverse with Latinos, Americals, Asians etc etc etc.

After the initial laugh, we started off with their fruit juice, made with your choice of milk or water. I personally love mine with milk, and had the passion fruit. It was good! The guava and mango were good too. If you ask me I don't think you can go wrong with their fruit juices, and I would always try some thing different on every visit.

Their food portions are huge!! Again I have yet to come across anything I don't like. Their layout and food presentation just makes it all the better. Love their plantains (both friend and sweet) and seafood soup. It's creamy rich and comes with so much seafood. I enjoyed all the seafood except the shrimps, which was kind of unfortunate because even though the shrimps were fresh and have the 'crunchy' texture, there was the bicarbonate aftertaste to it so I stopped eating them after a couple. Their meat platter served as a good appetizer to go round the table and we all enjoyed it loads.

My experience was made even better when they gave out the candy when you get the check. I had gone looking for those candies at the grocery stores but have yet to find them yet…

  5. Came here for breakfast, our usual breakfast spot had a line out the door, and we have meaning to try some other places in the area.
We were the only patrons, but started to fill up. It's a clean and spacious place with about 10 tables, staff is very warm we felt very welcomed!
Coffee and homemade Colombian Hot Chocolate was awesome! Pandebono was freshly made as well, always a great dipping pastry!
I had the Mondongo soup along with an arepa with cheese for breakfast, soup was savory; lots of ham and tripe, not gamey at all. Hubby had the scrambled eggs, mixed rice and beans along with a grilled chicken breast. Rice could have been a bit better, but didn't break the meal! Will definitely return to this charming place!
