I came here on a whim after the gym for what I was hoping good chicken. It's not really what I was expecting…Let me start off by talking about the restaurant itself:
It's a small place located in Maywood, right across from the maywood pancake house. I didn't expect the place to be fancy or anything so it wasn't a surprise to see it being a small restaurant that's more homey. I came here in a Saturday night around 7 and it was pretty packed. There were a lot of take out orders at the register and a few families sitting in to dine.
I had ordered the quarter chicken with rice and beans. The chicken really wasn't what I had expected…it's was very dry, but a good portion. If it wasn't so dry it would've been amazing because the wing of the chicken was absolutely delicious. The rice and beans were ok…some of the rice was hard, making me think it's a couple of days old (not sure if this is a cultural thing to have hard rice)? The beans weren't too bad. I mixed the rice and beans together and picked at the chicken. There's two different types of rice I believe (white rice and what I presume to be Spanish rice).
I can't say I've had many Peruvian food before but I had higher expectations with this place.
*please note this review was not to offend cultural food but a simple review of the restaurant*
I have seen the sign for Uncle Paulie's for quite some time now and it will easily become one of my new favorite spots to grab a bite after the other night!
Came in here the other day with my friend who has been here before so she ordered up a delicious meal for us. We ended up ordering a whole rotisserie chicken with 4 beef empanadas along with chaufa with chicken and steak. The chicken was cut into 4 huge sections and had the most delicious tasting skin and was extremely moist! They give you this green sauce that I put on everything and it was a flavor explosion! It added a nice little trace of heat to my entire meal! The empanadas were absolutely my favorite part of this meal, flaky empanada skin filled with shredded beef and a piece of hard boiled egg to set it off! The chaufa I was a little skeptical about being that who has ever heard of Peruvian fried rice… but that shit was BANGIN! The rice was loaded with flavor from both the chicken and the steak along with the little bits of fried egg in it.
The restaurant itself is very small but has about 10 tables I have yet to experience eating in the restaurant but one thing I must say was that they were very fast and efficient. The ladies behind the counter were very pleasant and I can't wait to come back for my next experience!
Small, casual, almost hole in the wall kind of place. No frills. Friendly staff & service. Inexpensive. Food however was pretty average.
Have tried takeout from here a few times but have only been inside once.
Drink:
I'm happy to see that they have Chicha Morada as a drink (no need for a menu, I noticed it on the side) as well as Inca Kola
Description from said menu:
Chicha Morada: Traditional homemade punch made of sweet purple corn 2.00
Quite simply, it is purple corn boiled with pineapple, cinnamon, clove, and sugar. It takes a bit like a sour-ish spiced beverage with a hint of sweetness. It's not super sweet, but it is delicious (but unique, I personally like it a lot and they make a good one but I know a lot who don't.) Try it if you wish, I mean it's 2 bucks, why not.
4.4
Chicken:
10 bucks for a whole one. Chicken was very moist and the sauce that came with it is delicious. I liked the mix of beans/rice but they didn't give the proper sides one time out of three.
3.9
In terms of anything else, I recognized on the side (as well) that they sell Alfajors. When she said they are 2 bucks, I was sold to buy one.
Description from said menu: Cookies filled with Peruvian Style dulce de leche
Alfajor was delicious. One of the best variants of them I have had bar one or two at most.
It gets a 4.7
Service:
Woman there was very nice, she seemed pleased when she relaized I knew what the drink was/got an Alfajor.
4.3 overall
However, I'll give it a 5 as the Alfajor is seriously delicious and the prices are nice and low and the woman is very nice. I want to try more stuff from here.
Small place in the heart of Maywood which is always packed with customers. Ordered the combo for 2 which came with a whole rotisserie chicken, fries, avocado salad and soda. Great value at $18. The chicken was super moist and had a nice flavor especially with the green sauce! That sauce is legit! It has a creamy cilantro with just a hint of heat. The rice was standard as were the beans. Not much more to talk about there. I was really surprised by the fries because they weren't good at all. Very soggy and not a pinch of salt. The salad was pretty standard but the mustard base dressing was tasty. The empanadas were crisp and filled with beef, really enjoyed them. Overall the apps and main were great but the sides could use a little more love. 3.5 if damn Yelp would allow half stars but the green sauce pushed me to the 4!
This is a local favorite. I LOVE peruvian food and get it anytime I can. This is 5 minutes from my dad's house so I sneak here whenever I can to get my fix. The rotisserie chicken is amazing. The chaufa is good. The papa a la huancaina is ok, it tastes a little more cheesy than anywhere else but like i said peruvian food is like crack to me so i need my fix haha. I am definitely happy there is a local place for me to enjoy such a delicious cuisine and they have lunch specials. I usually go in the evenings or weekends and am greated very well. Yesterday I placed a large order of about $80 and the lady working the counter wasnt too pleasant but again, I just care about the food LOL.
I knocked off one star because our waitress talked us out of an appetizer we tried to order when we were there, only because it took a long time to cook, but I feel like she talked us out of it because it was too much of a pain in the butt to make. I would've gladly waited a few extra minutes for it. I honestly can't even find it on their online menu now, so it's possible that they removed it altogether. But I digress..onto my review:
We had recently visited another Peruvian restaurant in the area prior to trying this one (I won't name names) but the other Peruvian restaurant got some pretty crappy reviews stating that it wasn't great compared to others and yadda yadda. My boyfriend and I were confused because we both really liked that restaurant-until we tried Uncle Paulie's. This restaurant blew the other one out of the park! My dad had been suggesting Uncle Paulie's to me for years and I am honestly pissed at myself for waiting so long to try it. I think its extremely casual atmosphere made it seem like less of an experience to me so I was turned off. Please don't make the same mistake I did. The portions here are so incredibly generous and the food is just exquisite. I honestly can't remember which dishes we ordered but I know we were incredibly happy with them. I know my main entree came topped with avocado and I was very impressed by the quality of it. It also came with a small salad that, too, included avocado and I made many remarks to my boyfriend about how tasty the salad was with the avocado in it. I remember that his meal came with a boiled egg on top and it really gave the dish some excellent flavor that he raved about. We both had to get doggie bags because of their enormous portion sizes, which we were more than thrilled about! Such a great restaurant, please don't let their extremely casual ambiance turn you off to their delicious Peruvian cuisine!
Uncle Paulie is the place to be when you're in Paramus, NJ!! Man, their servings are huge!! I mean, REALLY GINORMOUS! I ordered their 1/2 chicken rotisserie and it came with a huge side of rice plate and beans. Then, I ordered a side of banana plantain for only $3 bucks! That puppy was also GINORMOUS and it was sooo good! Top that, I even ordered their FLAN which was fantastic. So rich and creamy. I think I've gained a few pounds right after, but well worth the added love handles!! Hahaha… Here's the best part, my bill only came out to about $18 including my Peruvian "Inca Cola!" They even deliver to your hotel too, what more can you ask for? Great service and fast!!
Until then, Cheers! ~ :p
