  1. Easy to miss, hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot in Bay Ridge. I initially ordered takeout from this place and was blown away by their tacos. They come with guacamole which is not a typical free add-on. The food at Mandato is very authentic. I lived in Sunset Park for many years (Mexican food heaven) and it's nice to know that I can get the same quality and authenticity in Bay Ridge.

Stopped in last week during a snow storm and ordered the spicy chicken soup and carne asada. The soup was nice and spicy! Although, I wish there was more to it than just chicken and broth. I loved the side of warm tortillas, though! The carne asada was phenomenal!

The wait times for food can be a bit long but worth it for sure. I wouldn't recommend eating at the actual restaurant, unless you want to be screaming over the constantly blasting Mexican music on the jukebox. Order delivery.

  2. Best damn chicken nachos I've ever had!
Now I must tell you that I'm from New Mexico and I grew up on the real deal food. Chile chile and more spicy chile. I was a little hesitant to come on because every time is walk by it was dead. I figure WTH, let me give it a shot. The ambiance is plain, but then again you're not there to eat the ambiance, Are you? The kitchen reminds me of "abuela's house". Cozy!

Nachos are topped with re-fried beans. Cheese guacamole onions jalapeño sour cream and that crumbled Mexican cheese. Food heaven. I will definitely be returning.

  3. Really not impressed with guacamole from this place. Tacos were decent but otherwise borderline pedestrian. My rule of thumb for trying any new Mexican establishment is 2- Bistec & 1- Pollo taco is my order. Plus one side of Guacamole to see how well they prepare these avacados.

    2 – Bistec Tacos *** stars
    1 – Pollo Taco *** stars
    1 – Guacamole * star

The guacamole was not very good. sometimes I wonder how mexicans can fuck up an avacado but they did. It was a pudding, dripping consistency like they cut it with some oil or something else no chunks of avacado could be found any where. Sad really sad cause this says a lot about how the kitchen is operating.

Service is friendly but I would not return cause you can find better elsewhere!!

  4. I eat chili rellenos at every Mexican restaurant when I go to one for the first time. I must have had 70 or so versions of them. These were the best. They weren't fancied up…they were traditional chile rellenos. But so often, they're greasy, heavy, flavorless, have too much batter, etc… These were perfect. Two large perfectly fresh and cooked just right poblano peppers stuffed with a good amount of a Mexican mozzarella-like cheese (oaxaca?), fried in a thin coating of batter with a delicious, light tomato sauce with a few sliced peppers thrown in and grated hard cheese on top. The batter, when soaked in the sauce, was heavenly. It was the perfect chile relleno. The rice and beans were tasty as well, as was the sope. The masa was fresh, not dried out, as it so often is. The toppings (chicken and other stuff) were tasty as well. The salsa verde was fresh and had the perfect kick to it. The delivery guy got lost, so it did take a while for the food to come, but when it did, it was still warm and fresh. I'm so happy to have found this place! I can't wait to try more of the menu.

  5. Food: 3.5/5.0
    Service: 3.0/5.0
    Value: 3.0/5.0
    Decor: 2.5/5.0
    Overall: 3.5/5.0

Solid Mexican restaurant on 3rd avenue, probably on par with a competitor closer by but with a cleaner though more industrial decor.  Good for a delivery spot.
