I'm not very hopeful when it comes to sushi in Midtown on the West Side. Most places are below standard with not much to even raise a notion toward to. Izumi Sushi is one of these places. When I saw their lunch special of 3 rolls along with miso soup or garden salad for $11.50, I figured this was the typical price. But what really got my attention was the selection of rolls available for this lunch special. Crunchy rolls, spicy rolls, jalapeno fish rolls, tempura rolls. Most of these types of rolls have fallen on the wayside and been excluded from many restaurant's lunch specials or requiring an additional fee. So when I saw that, I knew exactly what to get.
For my 3-Rolls Maki Lunch Special ($11.50), I ordered for takeout:
– Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll – I don't really know what defined this as crunchy. The few pieces of tempura-like bits that were thrown in with the rice and spicy tuna? You may have noticed a little added texture, but for the most part, it was not noticeable. The spicy tuna was okay at best, warranting no interest of having to eat a second piece.
– Shrimp Tempura Roll – This was another letdown. The roll was very loosely wrapped so immediately upon touching it with the chopstick, the julienned cucumber would fall right out, and the roll would just crumble apart completely. The scant piece of shrimp tempura, and with little to no shrimp meat, was a huge letdown. The tempura was light and crunchy, but that was all I felt like was in the roll.
– Jalapeño Yellowtail Roll – And last but not least was the jalapeno yellowtail roll. The jalapeno slices were duly noted as being included in each piece, but it was far from having any resemblance of heat. At the very least, there should be a very subtle kick to it, but I didn't notice it one bit. Let down once again.
One thing I also wanted to note was that the rice was dense, almost bordering wet. It didn't have that light airy texture and utterly failed in any sign of stickiness. The rice would crumble apart on every piece of sushi, making for a somewhat unmanageable sushi roll. The ginger was the standard typical pink colored ginger, along with the standard smooth wasabi paste.
– Miso Soup – The miso soup was standard, served in a fairly sized, medium styrofoam container, filled with small minced-like pieces of tofu and seaweed. It tasted like the typical instant miso soup that one would come to expect at many Japanese restaurants. Sodium induced, slightly gritty at the bottom, palatable but nothing to rave about.
Overall, I was letdown in so many ways. If you're not picky, it should get the job done. Fish was not fishy, but neither did it taste very fresh. It was a poor attempt at sushi, and I will have to remind myself right now how decent Japanese restaurants are still lacking in Midtown on the West Side. Until my next conquest….
Warning Horrible people work here! Horrible management. Just not nice people what can I say.
UPDATE: Another worker from this dump started bothering me about this review. This girl was full of insults for me. I am just reporting the truth. She also stated to me that the delivery guy is only paid by tips – well that is illegal.
Ordered Seamless from here on Christmas Eve. When the delivery guy shows up he starts babbling that, "your order is too big! You spend too much money!".
I am totally serious, I am thinking he is concerned I am going to overeat or something. Actually food for my three kids and me and the girlfriend.
Then after I grab the delivery bag from him, the dude shows me the receipt, and he is complaining about his $2.00 tip. He wants more money. And I am like, "dude, all you did is ride a motorbike from three blocks, it's not like more food is more work for you." – the delivery being sushi, was very light anyway, and the weather was very nice and mild.
He was still saying I needed to pay him more, so I was just, "no problem anymore, I will never order from you guys again. Bye!"
I have ordered hundreds of times delivery, and never had this happen before. I am done with Izumi – first time – last time. I get delivery at least 200 times a year and I have never had a problem with any delivery person, complaining about the size of the tip. So who must be wrong – Izumi is WRONG!
Anyway the food was really nothing – just ugh! A hundred places to get sushi from – avoid Izumi.
Fresh sushi, large pieces and reasonably priced saki with great service. A hidden gem in Chelsea.

Solid, quality delivery for dinner (and it looks like their lunch specials are also good but my office is a bit far). I love the salmon skin salad and order it every time. My delivery dining partner seems to love the namesake soup and it's chock full of delicious seafood from what I've tasted. They do free edamame with a $25 minimum, which is something we'd order anyway and thus a great bonus.
Their delivery always arrives quicker than the estimates. For this and the free edamame, I'm going to round up to a solid 4 stars. Also, they are very generous with the fortune cookies; I believe we received 5 last time.
After two hours and two phone calls, I have yet to receive my lunch delivery order. Each time I called, the delivery guy was only an "hour" away.
Obviously not ground breaking sushi. All in all, it's pretty mediocre.
That being said, they have a great lunch deals and the sushi is good enough for me to be satisfied and surprised about the quality. I got the lunch special 3 rolls and a side for 13 bucks (miso soup, yellowtail and scallion, alaska, and tuna and salmon). The rolls were not the tightest but they were good otherwise. The miso was watery but still decent enough to eat.
The food was delivered quickly and while they soy sauce was spilled in the bag, I was overall please with the experience.
Really good sushi at a good price. It's a small place, but I didn't have to wait for dinner on a Saturday. The service was great – really fast and our waitress was so friendly. I recommend the shrimp tempura and eel avocado rolls. My boyfriend also got the chicken teriyaki and that was better than most chicken teriyaki I've had.
As previous yelpers have said, there's nothing that makes Izumi stick out from all other sushi places but it's still good. It's very small, can seat 10-15 people. I came here for lunch and got the lunch special which is a choice of 2 or 3 rolls with miso soup or a salad. I got the shrimp tempura and sweet potato roll with the miso soup. The miso soup was good and the tools were nothing special. A little too big though so I kind of struggled. Also some of the pieces came apart as I was dipping it in my soy sauce. It was rather annoying. They did have a pretty big selection of sushi rolls to choose from for the lunch special however.
Great for vegetarians! They had a veggie tempura roll which I have not seen anywhere before. Overall I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but good if you're in the area!
Ps. I like how when you first sit down they give you hot wet towels to clean your hands! It was refreshing and great on a cold day!
