El Paso Taqueria

“The guacamole is fresh and flavorful, with just the right amount of spice–it's actually quite addicting.”

“I will say that the rice can be pretty dry, but nothing you can't remedy by eating it with the beans which are moist.”

“Their enchiladas are phenomenal, and their "small dishes" (sope, huarache, tamale) are incredible.”

  1. These shrimp tacos for $13.50 are everything. The shrimp was marinated with chipotle sauce and paired with Pico de gallo, it was on fleek! Not to mention there were bits on mango in the taco which added the perfect fruity kick to my taste buds. Nice little spot in upper east, def recommend for some authentic Mexican food.

  2. Good hole in the wall Mexican place. I have both ordered in from here and ate there. The food is fresh and tasty, and there are a lot of options with all the typical Mexican fare. Delivery was prompt when I ordered in however when I ate there the service was so so not bad just average. The prices are good for the upper east side and drinks are not to bad either. The portions are large and generous and most entrees come with rice and beans. I have only eaten dinner here so I can't speak to the lunch. I recommend coming here if you want a good price and solid Mexican food with big portions.

  3. Tex-Mex staple for the Mount Sinai neighborhood. I wasn't craving Mexican food specifically, but an original plan for burgers in the East Village fell through when I went outside earlier in the day and felt the air chewing a hole through my face, and El Paso was steps away. Heck, I'll even enjoy boiled cabbage and fermented beans under these conditions.

In contrast to my usual predilection of ordering something cheese-stuffed and deep-fried (I think I'm getting old/boring, because now I find myself gravitating to kale instead of short-rib nachos), I went with the striped bass filet with rice and veggies. The bass came in a tasty tomato-olive blend, but I came away from the rice and veggies with sticky, oily lips. I tried a bite of my boyfriend's arrachera asade, and, in violation of the cardinal "no take-backs" rule, I immediately moved it back to his plate. I like a good medium-rare steak as much as the next omnivore does, but my boyfriend asked for rare and the skirt steak was practically mooing on his plate. I tasted raw tendon.

Strawberry margarita tasted like full-on tequila with the barest hint of watered down strawberry. I preferred the mango margarita with its actual artificial mango taste, and, much like a very good girlfriend, I hogged it for the rest of dinner. El Paso's chips and guac were delicious, though it's difficult to mess up guac (actually … putting pomegranate seeds in an effort to recreate a Pinterest post will do the trick), and fierier than most.

Unrelated note: one of the tables next to us featured a girl who was on her phone the whole time and her friend who sat staring into space. The two just sitting in total silence, with the only hint of interaction happening when Phone Girl showed her something on her screen. I'm not one to deeply scrutinize or comment on other diners but … don't be Phone Girl! It made me sad to see someone more fascinated with her phone than with another person.

NEXT TIME: chicken tortilla soup, grilled shrimp salad

  4. I have to give credit where it is due.  I haven't personally eaten in, but I do however get delivery.  They have some of the best fish tacos I've ever had.  That says a lot because those who know me know that fish tacos is a big staple of mine when ordering out.

The tacos are made with fresh lightly fried pollock.  A zesty pico de gallo, cabbage, and a generous portion of avocado.  For $12 for a set of three, it's a great price.

  5. SHRIMP PLATTTER is awesome.

Shrimp was so damn good.  and so damn cheap.  Came with rice, salad, pickled veggies.

Definitely a hole in the wall – don't bring any one bougie and definitely don't come here on a first date.

Only complaint was the plantains.  They sucked.  I think they ran out of plantains  and just used bananas.  Empanadas were hot and fresh, but not the best I've ever had.

  6. It is a small Mexican restaurant in Upper East.  It looks authentic environment.  Foods are also authentic and tasty.  It prepared and cooked very well. I had some fish and vegetables which were simply made but good quality.  Service was OK depending on the server.

  7. I came here once for lunch, and it was actually one of the most cost-effective eateries around Upper East Side – East Harlem area.  It was about $7 for a burrito.  The burrito tasted great, the inside of the place isn't the most glamorous of all places but I recommend it for a quick bite or on the go type of spot.  Haven't tried the happy hour for this spot but I would assume it would be crowded.  In addition, the lighting in the place sucks although maybe that is to create the ambiance of the spot.

  8. We have ordered delivery from them a few times.  Food is inconsistent.  I received a Burrito from here that was absolutely disgusting.  The Guacamole was brown that time as well.  Delivery can be somewhat spotty.  I can't speak for the location, space etc.  We have always done take out.  We prefer Lupitas.
