Teppan Bar & Grill

“I ordered the chicken satay, the roti canai, and the filet mignon and shrimp hibachi lunch special, which I had the filet mignon grilled median rare.”

“And the hibachi was fun and entertaining for kids which they are very accommodating for thankfully.”

“The fried rice was great, had awesome flavor maybe a tad too much salt but I ate every bit.”

  1. I happily enjoyed this place when I went on a Monday night before going into Brooklyn for a Nets game. Was really shocked on how empty it was but hey it was a Monday at 6 pm so sure. Found parking easily right outside. Those spots are good after 5pm on weekdays.

Came to this place initially because the $1 sushi menu caught my eye. Called to verify and the lady was super nice over the phone. With the amount of emptiness at this place, decided to sit at the bar with my best friend. Very comfortable chairs and a nice table top with tvs. You can see all of their liquor selection and it's decent.

Started with two glasses of water and two shots of Absolute Pear. Wow the shot was an actually shot glass and it was only $6 !!!! Whattttt that's awesome !! Not a bar that wants to charge you an arm and a leg for liquor. I ordered miso soup and sashimi (smoked salmon, salmon, and shrimp) while my friend ordered rolls and two pieces of tuna. The fish is really fresh ! So fresh I ordered the same thing again. The smoked salmon was my favorite. It was a pretty thin slice but it had the nice smokey flavor to it. Didn't overpower the taste of the fish itself at all. Pair it with a piece of pickled ginger and yum. Almost as good as a Philadelphia roll. Eh I love cream cheese so hmm tough one. Service was good too. The bartender was kind and attentive. Thumbs up.

    Would definitely come back!!

  2. If I could give this place more stars I would!! Being a huge lover and fan of all things hibachi.. I always found it surprising that NYC, one of the food capitals of the world, had none! (Chain hibachi ie Beni Hana don't count 😉 ). Then along came my discovery of Teppan and all my dreams came true.  I've been here a few times now and food has been consistently good if not amazing, service superb, generous portions. I've been here for lunch and dinner (hibachi only), have taken guests/friends here, and everyone has loved it.  AND… They deliver!! There are very few places that are great for ALL ages – Teppan is one of them.

Pros – aside from food being absolutely delicious, they are very accommodating to requests (ie adding extra garlic, spice etc)

    Negatives – none

Tips – pay the extra $2 for the fried rice!

  3. 3- stars for pricing

4 stars for the quality of food, but small portions!

They have a nice cute restaurant for date nights. I ordered the Roti Canai $5 which was delicious but too expensive. Ive been to other places before for $3.50!

Each roll was about $14-$16 estimated and then you had one or two rolls for $19 (lobster roll). The sushi rolls were fresh and good, but they were a bit small for the  price.

Service was good and our server was very patient with us since we were new. I haven't tried the hibachi, but I will probably go back with a group of friends to try it out.

This is a good place for sushi if you are ok spending that much money on it. It's hard to find a decent sushi place in JC!

  4. Do NOT order the side salad if you get the sushi lunch special. It gave me really bad food poisoning. This was the first time I got the salad and boy do I regret it. I don't think they washed the vegetables enough, which is what triggered it. Anyway, I had no breakfast and my boyfriend and I ate the same thing for dinner, so this has to be the cause of my food poisoning. I'm probably going to stay away from Teppan for a while. Once you lose my trust, it's hard to get it back.

  5. Food continues to be fab – ordered edamame, roti chennai, noodles and double crunchy roll. Highly recommend sushi here!

  6. I never had sushi in Jersey city before, so I decided I should at least try one place out.  Therefore, I came to Teppan because it was the highest rated Japanese restaurant we found on yelp.  The ambience is chill and the decorations make the place look quite high class.

We started with the Roti Canai, which comes with 2 pieces of roti and a delicious curry chicken dipping sauce.  Once I saw this on the menu, I had to order it  before the waiter even greeted us because I love it that much.  This is a definitely great appetizer to start with.  It is small, but it is hella delicious.

For sushi, we ordered the Mets and Atlantic Roll.  My favorite one out of the two is the Atlantic Roll because I have a thing for shrimp tempura.  The salmon in the Mets Roll was fresh.  I enjoyed both rolls, but I would definitely lean toward and rolls with shrimp tempura.

Overall, I believe the sushi is a bit overpriced for the size of the roll.  I understand that they are located in downtown jersey city, but it's definitely not a "bang for your buck" kind of place.  I would definitely come visit again and try the hibachi side of the restaurant.

  7. Meh. If you are here for quality Japanese food you will be underwhelmed. The sushi rolls (Philly roll) were fine, the agedashi tofu lacked flavor, the fried spring rolls were tiny and lacked shrimp, the nabeyaki udon had cheap vegetables, and the sushi pieces were on the small side. Service, once the server arrived, was pleasant. Beer was cheap, a plus, and the tempura for the udon had good flavor. For some reason, Christmas decor remains plentiful and tacky. It's March, time to take down that white plastic tree!

  8. Teppan Bar & Grill has Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, all in one place. Usually, places like these are disasters. There are too many options and none of the cuisines are particularly good. But this place was better than I expected.

We ordered takeout through Seamless (free delivery over $15).

I got the sushi roll special, which is 3 rolls of your choice out of spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, spicy white tuna, and spicy california, and either soup or salad. The rolls were pretty standard. There was a good rice to fish ratio.

My boyfriend ordered General Tso's chicken. It was a little bit too salty so the rice it comes with definitely helps balance it out. Plus, the chicken was cooked perfectly. It wasn't dry or anything.

I wouldn't mind ordering from here again, or coming in to try some of their lunch specials. Some of them seem like good deals!
