Worst Sushi/Food I've ever had. I actually came in a few years ago when the location first opened, and was pleasantly surprised. My dish was beautifully decorated and tasted fantastic. They must've changed the chef since because I was extremely dissapointed with their dishes. VERY OVERPRICED for small portions and the food is not even good at all anymore. I do not recommend this place. It is not even authentic and the sushi is lukewarm! This place needs to fix their menu. Not to mention it is a tiny space.GO ELSEWHERE if you are a true sushi lover. This place is clueless. Bad service also.
Oh yeah, bill was $100 for two people. SO NOT WORTH IT!!!!!
Been hearing the buzz about this place from all of my friends that have come here from all over NYC and Long Island. This place is Asian Fusion with a Dominican twist. I decided to get one of their special rolls since what's the reason to come here to eat traditional rolls? I got the "El Tolete (shrimp Tempura roll with yuca, crispy queso, avocado, etc)" and my boyfriend got the "La Chapiadora" (gold digger roll with yuca, sweet plantain, bacon, etc ). As you can picture their special rolls are named after popular Dominican terms that I was laughing as I was reading what these rolls contained. All sushi comes with a tray of three sauces: pink sauce (ketchup & mayo), soy sauce and spicy mayo. I got the passion fruit mojito that was one of the best mojito's I've had in a while with chunks of strawberry fruit.
We flew in from Miami this morning for the weekend. After visiting with relatives for a little while my brother decided to take us to sushi mambo or mambo sushi for dinner. Thank God when we got there they were not open yet because he then proceeded to take us to MamaSushi instead. Can I say OMG! What an experience!! From the moment we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by a very gracious hostess who was very accommodating and friendly. But the highlight of our experience by far other than the exquisite food was our waiter Malachi. I have been to my fair share of restaurants but I have to say that I have never had better service than I did by Malachi. My brother, my husband and I just adored him. Ok maybe I just adored him but to a minimum my brother and husband loved him, lol! He was super patient and very knowledgable of the menu. I was amazed how he seemed to have it memorized to the point that he could tell us each and ingredient and how each item we inquired about was prepared. I'm usually a little apprehensive when eating at a new restaurant as it could always be hit or miss. I have to glowingly say that each and every menu item that we tried down to my lychee mojito x's 2 were absolutely on point and exquisite. I just can't rave enough about the linguini calamari, Tierra and Mar roll, The Original roll, the Tolette roll, shrimp Chofan, and the coconut flan. Again, OMG! Can't wait to go back their tomorrow with my mom. She will love it too!! Thank you Mama Sushi. Keep up the good work!!
Lets get the bad out of the way… service on weekends can use a little work. Not sure if they were short on staff when I went, but it's a little slow. Didn't have drinks, so can't help there. And the place is small, wouldn't recommend for more than 2 ppl.
Now to the sushi. It's pretty much regular sushi, with a Dominican twist. But that twist sure makes those things yummy!!!
For those of you are that are sushi purist, this ain't the place for that. It's good sushi, but it's not trying to pretend to be some kind of art form (yes, I've been to Japan like the rest of you, I know its hard to find really good sushi). So just sit back and enjoy the flavors, it's a fun play on sushi.

My wife and I were looking for sushi food, roll etc.., on our way downtown and while travelling thru Hamilton heights on B'way, saw a new place "Mama sushi", with good music and lots of atmosphere coming into the street.
Nice place, with really cool mural, Che Guevara style, good vibe. Fun decor and good music. It is Latina- japo fusion very nicely done, sushi and very inventive rolls!! Too many to describe, we went with the flow, place was packed and full, tried the El Jibarito roll and more. Service at the bar was great, really took care of us with foods and drinks with lots of variety,as well.
Need to say more go and try it, also reasonably priced.
Must have patience to come here, we drove from Brooklyn on a Sunday, early evening. There are three parking lots in the area, good luck finding one that has place, luckily we did after 20 minutes. The area was packed, woman/girls dressed up like they were going to a club, meanwhile the sun was still out….is brunch that serious? I thought the wait was going to be longer, but the woman said 30 minutes for inside, and a hour and a half to sit outside. I wanted to sit inside because it was beginning to get chilly, after seeing several people come after us, and be seated outside & inside, I finally asked when we would be seated. It seems like that take priority for the local drug dealers & bottle girls. But finally we were seated, the waitress came pretty fast to take out drink orders, we ordered a pitcher of white sangria which was good. Shortly after a girl came by to see if we wanted hookah, we got one and had to pay on the spot ($25) which I found weird….
For appetizer we ordered the ribs (I didn't care for them, but my husband liked them)
Pork fried dumplings, these were really good! Wish I would have ordered two!
Crispy chicken, which tasted like chicken nuggets, nothing special, but wasn't bad. I can see ordering this for the kids….
The sushi rolls aren't traditional, which I like, we had one with steak, chicken, and a crab, my fav was the steak with platanos, and rice. Weird….but like I said it isn't traditional.
I will be back, especially since I know what to expect, please understand that great "service" isn't to be expected in Washington heights, patience is a virtue, expect feeling like you're under dressed if you don't have six inch heels at 3 in the afternoon, expect to smell lots of hookah, expect to be skipped, and except police check points….so don't drink too much, but this is all to be expected on dykman….
It was after one and Mama Sushi was not even open yet when we walked over and then waited so that we could have a business meeting in the outside eating area on a hot sunny day…
I am still trying to figure out what happened.
It wasn't the server's fault, because she had just gotten there and she was really working hard to make sure we got our water and our food. We were the only customers, but you could see, she was making the effort.
The food was small. I really ordered a bunch, I mean, I ordered like $25 worth of food on top of my appetizer. I would have felt like I got more if I ordered from the Mcdonalds kids meal.
The itty bitty teeny weeny sushi didn't taste bad. I just didn't get what happened and why the nice folks at Mama Sushi think it was ok for the rolls to look like they did. Don't get me started on how small the sushi was.
I am starting to think they take advantage of the fact that people in the heights just don't know any better. The place does a disservice to sushi, in a place where the population is ripe for introduction to sushi
After leaving Mama Sushi, I understand what women go through when this type of thing happens to them.
Two stars to the waitress for holding down the famine and another lunch for me after eating at Mama Sushi.

I am updating my review because my first one was for mama sushi prior to renovations. I have been to the current establishment twice.
Food: Same as previous reviews; pretty good if you are open to fusion food. This last time I have the 5 tigres and it was quite yummy. If you go with various people the best thing to do is for everyone to order a different roll dish and share with each other. We also tried the calamari which seems to be better than the first time I tried it pre-renovations. I recommend you try to Chinola (passion fruit) drink, it is just so so good!
Service: It sucks that you cannot make reservations on the weekends. Our waitress was extremely friendly and attentive. With that said, one of the hostess is extremely rude. Not the petite one, but the one that is curvier, darker skin with dimples. She is plain rude and lacks customer service skills. My friend had similar issue with her on a previous occasion. I recommend the manager gives her a personality makeover. The service can be a bit slow during the weekends.
Other than this, if you have not try it, why no?; It is not every day you get to try Latin Sushi.
