  1. I used to frequent Kiku more than I do now, but their mistakes became one too many for me. For one, they seem to have a problem with brown rice. Maybe it's more difficult to make a roll with brown rice, I don't know, but they seemed shocked and confused at the concept of brown rice. It's not a problem at other places, so that always came across as weird to me.

Another time, when I was with my dad for lunch, he ordered the lunch order of chicken teriyaki. They misunderstood and gave him a bento box. Not only was that not what he wanted, he's allergic to shellfish! The bento box comes with shumai and a California roll– shrimp and crab. That would have been a disaster if he was with someone who didn't know what was in that and he ate it.

Nonetheless, I came back recently, again with my dad. It was a more pleasant experience, though our server asked us five times to confirm our order (I guess because they've been getting a lot of people's wrong). One thing that I did not appreciate was that the place smelled like fish, which I immediately picked up on as soon as I walked in.

The food? Good, not great. My dad seems to like the place so I'll keep going with him but on my own, I don't think so.

  2. I am not exactly sure if I went to the same restaurant as the the people reviewing Kiku on Yelp. The food was far from great and the service was borderline horrendous.

It was a Saturday night and when I got to Kiku at 7PM it was almost filled. I stood at the door, waiting for my friend arrive and not a single person greeted me. I was there for 5 minutes, not a word; staff was incredibly preoccupied with their phone orders. My friend walks in, still no greeting…I had to walk up to the counter to ask to be seated. Call me old-fashioned but I find this to be unacceptable. We were seated by a window off the door, it was cold so I requested to move. Granted I've never, ever done this…I'm always agitated by people who ask to swap tables, but it was the middle of the winter and it would have been truly uncomfortable to sit by the door. The staff acted pissed we asked, and then didn't escort us to the new table. We carried our menus across the restaurant and seated ourselves upon the pointing of a waitress at the counter.

As for the food, nothing notable. I've had fresher fish, I've tasted better special rolls. Not even worth going into detail. I'd avoid this place at all costs considering there's a good amount of sushi restaurants on Staten Island with exponentially better service.

  3. 5 Stars because the waitress smiled a lot and gave us tuna salad on the house. Shh!

Lunch felt like dinner. I felt like a stuffed balloon about to explode. In a good way.

Sushi was fresh and thick cut. Beef teriyaki was tender and juicy. As good as it gets. "It" meaning Staten Island sushi.
