Clemen’s

“I personally like the al pastor (roasted pork) but the vegetarian burritos are so generous, you don't even miss the meat.”

“Docking stars for this place for giving you styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery is like docking a dog for being a cat.”

“For cats who want a damn good burrito or similar, made with relatively fresh ingredients and plenty of them — Cali style — then enjoy!”

  1. It's ok. Very home-run type of joint which might be a little better during the daytime.

The employees are very nice and sweet, so at least there is that!

Their portions are huge! So expect a lot when you come here. I ordered a San Francisco Burrito with pork. You can customize this to your liking so I opted out for beans and pork only.

They forgot to add guacamole to my burrito but my friend requested it for me later. Their pork is ok, a little on the dry side. The rice in the burrito was delicious though! Nice choice of spices.

It's overall not too shabby, but not really amazing either. Prices range 6-8 dollars which to me seems just a tad more expensive than any other place serving this type of food that you could find more authentic in Sunset Park's Little Mexico.

  2. It's a nice space, and decently priced for NY.

My problem was with the main ingredient in my dish – carne asada – which was tough/dry from sitting on the steam table for too long.  You might expect that at midnight, but not at 7 pm on a weeknight with the subway commuters heading home.

While I can understand pre-cooking things can help them crank out plates faster, it wasn't busy at all, so the buffet approach isn't ideal.  I'd be happy to wait 5-10 minutes for some freshly cooked-to-order proteins.  Stuff simmered in sauces can sit.  Beans can sit.  Thin meats on their own can't.  With a little bit of extra effort, this could be a neighborhood gem.

  3. A cold and soggy mess.

I ordered delivery service from them and the food order arrived 2 hours later, everything was soggy and flavorless. I ordered nachos grande which came with grilled chicken and cheese but all of the nachos were a soggy mess and the cheese was one big slop.

I also ordered some rotisserie chicken with black beans and rice, the chicken was flavorless and the skin was soggy, inedible really, the black beans and rice were flavorless. The side of guacamole I ordered was watery and my entire meal was a cold soggy mess.

Their food is terrible, I will never again ordered from this establishment.

  4. So the outside makes you really want to see what the place is about. I never see anyone dining in here, so I never went for lunch/dinner. This evening, I decided to give it a try.

Let me start by saying, THE STAFF IS SO DEPRESSING. Very, very depressing vibe. The lights flicker on and off. My Mom made a comment, "I feel like I'm actually in Mexico." We used to live in Southern California, and she remembers going to Mexico seeing all of the young children coming with their siblings for food (so sad but this is what this establishment reminded her of).

We ordered the guacamole and chips, nachos (don't forget if you just say this, you get cheese and that's it!), and a burrito. The guacamole tasted as if it had two cups of water in it. Absolutely no flavor at all. I could make better nachos at home, and the burrito was just "ok". I never recommend fast food chains, but this restaurant makes chipotle look like a five star restaurant.

Shimmy over to Elora's on the next block! Never coming back here.

  5. I had a steak burrito tonight here. It was what you'd expect from a place masquerading as a Mexican joint called Clemens. My favorite was their hot sauce. It shines through the sour cream, when usually the sour cream covers too much. For it being so I late at night, the rice wasn't from the bottom of the pan. The meat was so so, but it is from a Mexican place called Clemens.
It's no frills, and slightly more expensive than Chipoltle if I remember correctly, and that was my least favorite of this place.
Don't expect a whole lot, and you won't be overly disappointed.

  6. "Bland" is not an adjective one usually associates with Mexican food, yet the food at Clemen's needs to be kicked up a notch or two.  The red and white corn tortilla chips were fresh but needed a pinch or three of salt.  The guacamole was watered-down and turned brown right before our eyes as soon as its container was opened.  The tomatillo salsa had a nice kick but was also very watery.  Rice a roni spanish rice has much more flavor than the tomato-seasoned rice here. Main dishes were a little more successful.  The soft corn tortillas used in the tacos here split the difference between their fresh brethren used in Sunset Park and Chipotle's packaged flour tortillas. The marinade used in the chicken filling was well flavored, and the vegetarian taco was overflowing with enough greens and beans for two or three tacos. There are a plethora of vegetarian options on offer here too, defined not only by the absence of meat but by the presence of grilled portobello mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach. The Chipotle-style filling system for the tacos and burritos affords a nice level of transparency and efficiency, and the counter-people move swiftly.

  7. Why are these people still in business? I went in here with a friend and got "memelas". I kid you not, it looked and tasted disgusting. We couldn't even lift it up without feeling disgusted. It was soggy, mushy, stuck on each other, and super sour.

Also, maybe it was just a REAAALLY off day, but the girl behind the counter rolled her eyes while taking my order. Possibly because I didn't say memelas correctly. Geeez

Stay away. I should've taken pics as proof; too bad we forgot to as we were just so baffled by what was Infront of us.

That was all we ordered. Thank god.

  8. Look, I only expect so much out of a 3am taco, and this place gets it.  They are big, cheesy, greasy and they put whatever I want in it.  Lots of options, everything has been just fine considering cost and what it is and when I get it.  This place is a savior to those of us in the WT area with the munchies late at night.
