  1. Wow what a gem in Newark!  I would leave campus once a week or every two weeks to get some sushi from here either dine in or carry out.  It's always fresh, not overwhelming with rice, and never disappoints.  I've come here and had some friends order tempura and even their teriyaki lunch specials that are also quite nice.  Service is quite nice, except during the summer when they start swatting that electric fly swatter around… xD

It's easy to miss but keep your eyes open for this place, especially when hit with a sushi/Japanese food craving in Newark!

  2. Still good, but booo no edamame this time and they charged me for the spicy mayo. Womp womp

  3. One of the only three sushi places I eat at and trust in the world because I'm a paranoid vegetarian. The other two being in Princeton and London. Came here all the time when I was an undergrad at Rutgers, and still do when I'm in the area. Sushi is always amazing and they have great vegetarian options. Presentation is beautiful, service is great, and has a classy but fun ambiance. Great place to come at night and hang out — they have a pool table downstairs among other things. Drinks are all amazing — and sometimes the bartenders will make a special drink for you and then name it after you! Karaoke nights here are also very fun.

  4. I come here all the time. The speciality rolls are great. It may be to pricey, but the rolls are pretty filling. The kitchen food is also good. They have a pool table downstairs. It's not regulation size, but definitely a great place for college students to hang out and pound a drink or 10.

  5. Packed to capacity with patrons enjoying wine at the quaint bar is the scene I walked into for my Friday lunch pick up. I was told it would be a 20 minute wait and it was more like 35. The service could have been better. I wasn't sure where I would be picking up my food and there was literally no space to stand nor park. I had to leave the car running with my hazards on outside the venue. Parking is available in a lot next door but it's expensive. I'm sure there is some street parking but I didn't have the time to look. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with brown rice, miso soup and California rolls. For the cost, it was a small portion of chicken. I don't like mixed veggies and had never had my chicken teriyaki prepared with them. I'd nix them in the future if I was the owner. They don't present well even if they are cheap. A few string beans or broccoli florets would have been better. The miso soup was disappointing but the rolls were excellent! They are the reason I'll be back for a date night. My hubby likes sushi and I want to support Newark.

  6. This is the place you want to go to have great sushi in the Newark business district. The sushi is fresh.
One of my favorite rolls is the New York Yankee roll. It has Eel, Spicy Kani, Apple, Avocado and White sauce.
Miso soup is very good. The vegetable and meat dumplings are super delicious. You can get them steamed or fried.
The place has a full bar. The customer service is very friendly and
efficient, particularly if you go there during your lunch hour.

  7. Maybe my taste buds have been spoiled from DC's food scene, but I was so disappointed. I was in town for the weekend for a concert (woot Big Bang!) and my friend and I wanted Thai but it closed at 4:00 (wtf???) so we came here. I ordered an eel roll (I could eat 3 rolls, easy), the sweet potato tempura (I love when places JUST have sweet potato, not lumped in with other veggies), and the chicken teriyaki appetizer.

First thing to come out was the sweet potato tempura. It's sprinkled with cinnamon and comes with some opaque, cream-based sauce. Huh. Okay. I was reminded of the sweet potato fries from Ray's Hell-Burger (re: not even remotely Asian) but I tried them anyway. They're good, obviously sweet from the cinnamon-sugar, which takes away from the authenticity, but at least it's legit tempura batter.

The chicken teriyaki appetizer was a pretty large serving and the chicken itself was good (not too tough or dry) but man oh man where did we go wrong with the actual teriyaki? Even the stuff from a bottle in the grocery store tastes like teriyaki. This had a weird spice to it and was definitely not traditional teriyaki.

The eel roll was the biggest letdown. When it came out, I was honestly confused. It didn't look like a traditional eel roll. First, there was a ton of rice (which, a lot of places do to skimp in the actual ingredients, and not like this place is high-end) but it didn't even seem to be sushi rice (my friend said the same about his California roll). Additionally, the usual sauce/drizzle that comes on top was totally missing so the whole thing was a lump of dry, yet overly sticky rice. I ate 2 pieces and called it quits.

Everyone else seemed very satisfied with their food (the girls from Rutgers next to us were quite voracious) but I couldn't deal. I was glad I got a side of rice with the appetizer because that's what I ended up flling up on.

I would give 1 star but the service was good – our server was prompt and really nice, so the place itself is run well. Unfortunately, when the food is this disappointing, nothing makes up for paying money for an empty stomach.

  8. I came here while en route somewhere. I was surprised to find such a nice little sushi restaurant tucked away along a quiet street in Newark. I sat at the counter since I was by myself.

The servers were very nice and accommodating. They replaced my chopsticks immediately when one fell, filled up my water quickly and explained all the menu items go me. In the end, I stuck to my normal veggie sushi selection. I ordered 3 rolls, taking advantage of a lunch deal. My sushi also came with miso soup, which I liked.

The sushi came pretty quickly, considering it was prime lunch hour. I thought they were pretty good. The sweet potato tempura pieces were quite large (took me 2 bites), but the tempura was well done. My other sushi was decent too. Overall, pretty good sushi, but nothing spectacular…although I may find my experience better if I tried fancier rolls with fish.

The place is small, but I can see it being a good, pretty affordable go-to sushi place for locals. If you're looking for good sushi while in the area, give this place a try.
