  1. Long wait to get seated. The restaurant was very crowded, and people were waiting outside too because there was no room anywhere (even the bar).

We ordered the Guacamole en Molcajete, which they make right in front of you. The guac and tortilla chips was good, and we finished it very quickly. I had the Enchiladas Rancheras for my main dish, which was good, but a little plain-tasting. I wish it came with more red tomato sauce. And I didn't like the rice and beans that came with it. I also ordered sweet plantains as a side, which I thought were very good. And lastly, we had our free flan that we received for checking in on yelp. I love flan, but there's was a little too thick for my taste.

Oh, their margaritas are pretty awesome!

  2. What better way to celebrate my nephew's black belt achievement in Tae Kwan Do then by going to a Mexican restaurant – this is Queens after all! El Patron is a good place to host a party even when you are seated next to a larger one than yours they handle the crowds in style! That being said some of the food items can miss the mark.

Our party of eight started our with a couple of bottles of wine. One of the bottles of wine we received was "corked". This has never happened to me in a restaurant before but it is when your wine has a "mildew" funky smell. This can happen anywhere for a number of reasons and usually not a reflection upon the restaurant. It's why you usually taste the wine and sniff the cork before accepting a bottle in a restaurant. Fortunately they exchanged the bottle without a problem and brought us fresh glasses for the bad wine.

For apps we had 2 orders of guacamole and Mussels in garlic sauce. The guac is made table side to your liking, spicy to mild – everyone agreed it is a great version with freshly made tortillas. Surprisingly, the mussels came in a delicious buttery, white wine sauce and although the mussel meat was not the largest they were nice and tender – this was served with crostini (little toasted bread slices).

The mains are where we ran into some trouble. My Combo Patron had a pork tostada where the little cube sized pieces were overcooked. The steak taco tortilla disintegrated when I tried to pick it up – this was bland as well. The enchilada suiza was a good version. I was hungry so I still ate it all! The shrimp salad was a generous portion enjoyed by my mom-in-law. My brother in law got an excellent half roast of chicken. His mom had an insane portion of steak fajitas – she had to take it home, but she enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed the taco salad, but thought the chicken was too salty and removed it – I thought it tasted fine. The rice and beans are forgettable (I just added this because I forgot to mention them!)

The desserts (got our free flan from our Yelp check-in) were decent. The tres leches cake was average. We had 2 orders of flan and it was enjoyed by most.

Overall, the the entire meal was not too costly – coming for lunch is an even a better deal! You can find some decent items on the menu, but don't expect to be blown away. I would say 3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the service. If you are with a large group I think its festive and fun atmosphere is the way to go!

  3. Came here saturday night with a friend and had a great time.
After reading the reviews I was a bit worried but Ive been wanting to try El Patron for a while.
When we first arrived the hostess was a little rude, it wasnt until my friend started speaking spanish to her that she became friendly. Which kind of sucks because they shoild treat everyone the same.
I ordered the patron bottle berry margarita which was so good and strong. My friend got a mojito which he said was one of the best hes ever had.
For dinner I got shrimp fajitas which were alright, nothing special. My friend ordered the vehetarian enchiladas which I tried and loved. I know what to order bext time.
Overall it was a good experience and Id def go again

  4. The drinks in the cute little patron glasses are strong and delicious . It's a pretty small venue though so clutter and wait time is a big issue. The food isn't anything to be amazed over but it's satisfactory for a quick sit down dinner.

  5. My family and I took a chance on a Friday night dinner for my birthday. We didn't have a reservation.

We arrived and used the valet parking which was so helpful with all the snow and ice. Upon entering the restaurant it was crowded. Every table was taken. The restaurant didn't have a waiting area so we had to mill about close to some people who were dining. I wasn't crazy about doing that but it was way to cold to wait outside.

After about 30 minutes we were seated. The menu is large and there is lots to choose from. The drinks were strong. We ordered the wings, calamari and the chicken flautas. All of those were very good. For entrees we had steak. It was ok. A little overcooked as we requested medium.

Overall it was a good experience and I would go back.

  6. Came with friends to this restaurant. We have been waiting to come to this place for a very long time over the weekends. But each time this place's wait time is 1+ hrs. We thought bc of this long wait time, this restaurant would be very good place to eat. However, it wasn't…

    We ordered:

    – Mango flavored Patron. It was watered down. Not sure if that was supposed to be, but the tequila flavor wasn't strong or felt.

    – Chicken Soup. It was too light and bland. The flavor wasn't there. I tasted more the carrot flavor than the chicken.

    – Tostones con todo. The meat was ok, but the chicken wasn't. They only gave us three pieces of tostones. They could have given out more…

    – Ceviche mixto. It was well done. The combination of fish, onions, and avocado was right.

    – Rola. It was ok, nothing special nor outstanding.

    – Entrana a parrilla. Didn't get to try this one.

    – Bandeja Paisa. The meat was too hard to chew. The skin of the crispy fried pork skin was too hard to chew and it wasn't crispy.

    – Free flan. This was obtained by checking in Yelp app.

Overall, there was too much cons than pros. Having eaten Latin food at Astoria, it seems that other Latin food places outside Astoria is not up to standards…

  7. I came here for a late lunch/early dinner. I sat at the bar they have 3 TVs and cute decorations on wall. The server was very attentive.

They started me off with a fresh salad since I declined bread or nachos. The salad was delicious & I liked the dressing. I had a tasty tropical martini. The mango wings had a unique flavor that i enjoyed as an appetizer.

My steak fajita entree was good with onions, peppers, mushroom, lettuce, tomato & guacamole (I love Guac).

Last but not least I had my free flan w check in as dessert. It was a good custard w whipped cream, drizzled caramel n chocolate. I've never had chocolate on flan so that was interesting

Overall it was a good meal and I would return for Mexican food & great drinks

  8. We got a to go order from El Patron. The orders included chicken enchiladas, a veggie burrito, guacamole with chips, and the fajitas.  I thought the food was fine but not very authentic and I wouldn't rush back.  The portions were quite large.
