  1. Came here with a group of friends after a long day at the zoo and cruising Arthur Avenue. This is the best homestyle Italian dinner I've had in NY. First, they don't have menu's, but the waiters come by telling you what the house is cooking tonight. 3 months later, I can remember exactly what we had because it was so good: amazing meatballs (not fatty, but tasting like real meat), great ziti with vodka sauce, lamb shank which was literally falling off the bone.

Altogether, we got out for $40 per person including wine and tip. Such a great spot!

  2. I'm embarrassed to say that I am a born and bred New Yorker and have never eaten on Arthur Avenue……until a recent Saturday evening.  My sister and I ventured over to Arthur Avenue and had dinner at Dominick's.

I have to say this is an old fashioned restaurant and the first thing I noticed is how small it is.  The second is how you sit family style – I wasn't too fond of the seating arrangement as it seems awkward – you almost feel forced to talk to the people next to you.  Also, it is a very noisy restaurant – seems like everyone is yelling.  Another thing I noticed is that you aren't given menus – the waiter simply comes over and tells you what's on the menu……ummmmm how about the price of the dish?  You don't know – even when the check comes because there is no check.  Once again the waiter comes over and tells you how much you owe.  I also noticed that everyone paid in cash (as did we) so I'm not sure if they accept credit cards (but if I had to guess I would say no).  Speaking of the waiter it seemed like they knew all the diners except my sister and I as they went around and to have conversations with different patrons and even referred to some by name.  Anyway on to the food…..

We started off with a salad to share – it was a basic garden salad tossed with oil and vinegar.  A basket of bread is also brought out at the same time (without butter or oil).  After tasting the bread we realized that it was good all by itself – it really didn't need any butter.  For our entrée we ordered veal francese and linguine with meat sauce.  Both were delicious.  The veal had great flavor and wasn't dry (which is sometimes can be) but the star of the show was the meat sauce with the linguine.  All my goodness that sauce was delicious!!  Most Italian restaurants I've gone to the sauce doesn't even stick to the pasta but not here…..I wish there was more pasta as we had a lot of sauce left but it was absolutely delicious!  We were full so didn't stay for dessert/coffee.  Our bill came out to only $46 (we didn't have drinks either) but again we have no idea how much everything cost.

I did enjoy my meal at Dominick's and would probably go back again.

  3. Dominick's doesn't cease to amaze and delight – delicious, succulent, flavorful, scrumptious, and simply mouthwatering. I can keep on with colorful adjectives but all I have to say is – when people sitting at the table next to you not only want to order what you're having but steal your left overs – it's THE place to be!  Did I mention  that you can't help but become part of the family the minute you walk in? Dinner at Dominick is most pleasurable and satisfying experience every time. Thanks guys!

  4. I really wanted to like this place.  Actually I do LIKE this place, but I'm not so keen on the food and the service.  It's kitchy, it's old school and it's definitely one of a kind, but I didn't feel like I got a $58 dinner (plus tip) tonight.
First, it is cool with the communal dining tables.  Get used to your new neighbors.  I did like the spoken menu, although I sometimes would like to ponder a choice or two and having to make a rash decision often works against me. I rolled with it anyway.
I had the stuffed artichoke, which was OK.  Not life-changing, but decent.  It took FOREVER to clear the plate after I was finished with that.  It was next to the stack from my neighbors, so it wasn't just me with the slow table service.  So in my quick decision mode, I got pork chops and was told that they'd be spicy.  Good, I like spicy.
Then it took FOREVER for them to come.  On a Wednesday night no less.  They arrived, looked delicious.  But they were anything buy spicy.  And they were overdone.  I was ready to eat my arm, so I struggled with them and then gave in with about 1/2 the second chop consumed.
Did I want to give this 5 stars and love it, YES.  Could I do that, NO.

  5. An old school Italian, no frills, super casual spot. A permanent fixture on Arthur Ave. Communal tables, no fancy dishes or decor. It's about the food. If you are looking for fancy, creative, fusion type stuff….this is not the place. Basic bread, family style to share, classic, staple Italian dishes. Good food, comfort food….hits the spot! It's an experience to be had.

Service is warm & friendly. They don't have dessert though, so we went to the spot next door & they had some really good Tiramisu.

  6. Update: 4 days after posting my 3-star yelp review, I received this incredibly rude and defensive message presumably from management at Dominick's. Please excuse the spelling errors; this was copy/pasted.

"A suggestion for the future: No one cares about your favorite restaurant in your home town unless you are reviewing it. To negitively compare the restaurant you ARE reviewing to that restaurant is absurd. No one cares about you in your 20's or how you felt. No one cares what you believe the kitchen is doing or why. Talk about the food, service and atmosphere, then, before you post your review, look at all the other reviews to see how your reality tests against those reviews. Also, I would focus on the packed dinning room and your 45 minute wait for a table  at 5:30 on a Saturday as another way to measure your reality testing. Oh, please stay away from my restaurant…Thanks"

I've decided to take their advice, and will modify my review to one sentence as follows:
If you want to be crammed into a dated restaurant full of hair-sprayed B&T, served raw chicken and dry meatballs, receive a bill with no itemized pricing, and finally get menacing private Yelp messages about your honestly written review, then by all means, I wholeheartedly recommend patronizing Dominick's.

  7. This is one of the staples of Little Italy in The Bronx. It's been here for at least 30 years. They serve immense portions of pasta and veal parm meant to be shared family style. This place is really not for foodies. There is no ambiance whatsoever, in fact you are seated with other people on vinyl covered picnic tables. In my openion, the food isn't nearly as good as it used to be. Maybe it's just that I have become jaded over the years. Still, the price is right and you will not leave hungry.

  8. I have never gone to a restaurant that doesn't present a menu. It was a great idea. It's hard enough to picking a place to eat. This restaurant saves time when the waiter named Jack named what he recommended we definitely enjoy.

He was absolutely right. Not only was it amazing but the size platters was enough to serve a group of seven of the hungriest people.

We practically filled the tables with food. We were treat like kings and queens. They were so attentive always filling our water glasses and refilling the bread without being asked. Jack had a couple of jokes made us feel happy to be there.

Pasta was perfectly cooked, sauce was nice and thick and very tasty. Pork chop was humongous and so tender we didn't have to use a knife to serve ourselves. Overall experience and food was 5 star.
