Went for Lunch
Food – 5/5. The food takes a bit of time to come out because everything is made from scratch. The miso soup has tremendous umami flavors that you would get from a slow-cooked dashi and konbu stock. The tsukemono cucumbers are nice and refreshing while having just enough salt to taste good even by itself. Karaage was crispy with juicy thigh meat inside and the accompanying salad had a light mayonnaise dressing which went well with the fried food. The sushi, to be honest, was not too amazing or that "restaurant quality" that I'm looking for when I go out for sushi. The presentation is awesome and the sizes are good but the fish doesn't particularly amaze you with its taste.
Service – 4/5. It seems to be one waitress there but she is always on top of things. Friendly and polite, also always speaks in half Japanese!
Price – 4/5. They have combo meals but not particularly special prices for lunch or anything of that sort. It is on the higher side with my meal being around $15 but they give you a good variety of food for the price.
Parking – Mall Lot (Free)
I really want to give this place more stars but I'm already pushing myself with 3. I don't mind the slow service- for a store run by the elderly couple with one extra waiter, I wasn't expecting much. I thought this was the first time eating at Asahi, but I now remember that many years ago, I went there for lunch but can't remember much else.
The sushi dinner was… All rice. The fish pieces were not well cut and it was literally sitting atop a huge piece of rice! The tempura that came as appetizer to the dinner sushi was fine. It's BYOB so we brought our Sapporo beer and some sake. They served green tea without my requesting- a hint that it's a truly japanese joint. This IS, but it's just not that good. I haven't tried the ramen but it looked pretty good- so I might come back to order something else but definitely not sushi/sashimi.
They have a srsly long menu and I posted some pics of the specials menu- really good deals for the price.
The place was PACKED by 7pm on a Saturday night. There's no music, so it's quite easy to hear the other tables. The tables are sticky, like what another reviewer said, but I think it's the finishing of the polished wood than anything else.
lord knows the name of what I had but it was a lunch combo that came with ramen, tempura, 6 pieces of nigiri sushi; the ramen noodles were delicious and I loved the broth, very homey and calming; the tempura was sooo good!!! Super light and crisp. Don't know what they did but it was somehow buttery too, it's magic what they did; the nigiri was great! fish was super fresh and had a lovely texture and flavor; this was a great deal for $20!)
This place is small mom and pop runned restaurant. It is literally two people doing it all: cooking, serving, waiting, cleaning. They are possibly the cutest Japanese couple ever! The quality of food is great and totally worth the price.
This is one of the better sushi places this side of the Hudson. If you aren't from this area, the restaurant can be a little tricky to find as it is hidden in a plaza right off a highway off ramp. The exterior is completely unassuming. The interior includes some Japanese elements such as paper lanterns and some Japanese inspired wall paintings which give the place an authentic vibe.
If I have one complaint it is that the prices are steep. The sushi platters come in at around $30, and while the quality is certainly there, I didn't really leave full. Where I was pleasantly surprised was their special combo dishes. I can't remember the name of the combo, but I got a bowl of rice with lots of thick cut tuna sashimi on top, some kind of ramen (sort of tasted like miso soup but with ramen noodles), and 2 pieces of friend chicken. Everything was very good. I was especially taken aback by the tuna bowl dish, since it seemed like there was a lot of meat, more than the typical sushi platters, but the whole combo was only $20, quite the step down in price. I don't know where they are cutting the cost there, but it was great. I left completely full and my wallet didn't suffer as much.
The Story: My sister and her boyfriend wanted to grab Ramen. I originally wanted to hit up Menya Sandaime in Fort Lee but I also wanted sushi. We decided to try this place since their pictures looked so good!
Food: We ordered a lot of different food, mostly ramen. I got their ramen and sushi set. I think their broth was a little on the salty side but the broth of the seafood ramen was perfect. Their sushi surprised me because they had put wasabi in the actual sushi themselves. I've only seen that in Japan. This place is legit.
Price: I think the price is very fair for what you get. I've seen one of the yelpers stated that their portion sizes are smaller now. Well, the current portion size still filled up my stomach pretty well! No complaints there. Each set is about $20 and their ramen is about $12
Decor: It's a fairly small restaurant. I think they can fit 40 people…TOPS. If you're not looking for this place you'll miss it!
Service: There was definitely a language barrier but since i've master the asian broken english. We did a okay =)
Parking & Finding the Place: It's in the shopping center where HanNam is. Plenty of parking!
Additional Thoughts: Owned by mom and pop (oh how i love these!). I will definately go back to try out the other sets they have!
This local mom and pop shop is home to my favorite bowl of chirashi and I'm always eager to stop by whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
For $18, I get their Chirashi Deluxe (see picture) which is a large bowl of rice topped with generous cuts of raw fish and other seafood, such as squid and clam, and even a considerable amount of uni (sea urchin). Yum.
We stopped here after a long day of shopping. Yelp lists that they close at 10pm on Sunday's and we arrived at 9:10pm. It looked like they were about to close and there was no one in the restaurant.
We sat down and quickly ordered our food. The three of us all ordered the unagi combo which came with unagi (eel) over sushi rice. Udon soup. Fried chicken. The combo was about $19 or $20.
We also wanted sashimi so we ordered the sashimi deluxe for $30.
The sashimi was very fresh. The combo platter came with a lot of food. Overall, it was a good meal and we will definitely be back.
Thanks Yelp for directing us here!
I remembered while I was a kid, every time I went to my grandparent's home, my grandma would spend hours at kitchen and then brought me a lot of foods that way more than I could finish, and my granddad will sit across the table and watched me eat with smile. This sounds strange, but main t reason that I like Asahi so much is because the old couple who run this place, they just remind me of my grandparent and those happy memories while I was little. Sometimes I feel the urge that I need to come to this place just to check them out, just to make sure they are OK and the business is still running. Weird, right?
Now, back to the food,
I always order the set menu just because they are just great value, I don't know how can they make money with price so cheap ( all around or less than $20), this is insane!
Ramen here is OK, I won't say it's authentic but the portion is huge, the ingredient is fresh and flavor is good.
Sushi and fried chicken are my favorite, sushi is constantly fresh, and fried chicken is crispy outside and juicy inside. Nothing is better than hot fried chickens with some fresh cold beer.
Speaking of beer, this place is BYOB. There is a liquor store (Wine King) at the same plaza that is close to the Korean super market.
Service is definitely slow given there are only 2 people talking care of the restaurant, so be patient, and just make sure you are not in any rush. I probably will not consider coming here for lunch during my workday. You should not, unless you have 2 hours lunch break.
