Batten Ramen
“I can't speak for their ramen but the gyoza and katsu curry at batten ramen are sooooo good.”
“This is a great little ramen place when you don't want to deal with the traffic and parking at Mitsuwa (esp on the weekends).”
“)
And they also have different kind of daily special that are also very generous in size.”

Had the batten ramen – very flavorful broth. Decent amount of noodles and good amount of pork (lean also). It might be nice to have corn & fish cake included in this option as well. Also had the gyozas (good for an app) and a taste of the katsu curry (crispy and tender cutlet; good). This might be my fav ramen place so far in NJ. Cash only and although there is a ginormous muni lot in the back, during peak meal times, parking can be a harrowing experience. Will return.
Batten is an average ramen place in fort lee. You don't come here for the ramen, you come here for the japanese comic books (manga) and the glorious curry.
Their ramen is fairly lack luster, noodles are decent but the broth is lacking in flavor and leaves much to be desired. The chashu is over cooked and way too chewy for the most part. The only good thing about batten in terms of food is the curry. They might as well just change their name to Batten Curry and serve ramen on the side optionally.
It is hard to get ramen right. However, with options like Menya couple of blocks away, it's hard to justify eating ramen at Batten.
Good curry, interesting interior, subpar ramen.
Went for Ramen Discount Monday
Food – 4/5. They serve lots of different types of ramen but their signature Batten Ramen is a Tonkotsu broth type. It definitely tastes like it has been cooking for a long time as it has that rich, silky pork broth that defines good Tonkotsu. The noodles have a nice bite, the pork is tender and the bamboo shoots give a good texture. However, their onigiri is very lackluster and I recommend against getting it, especially when fried/curry rice has the same price tag as the onigiri.
Service – 4/5. Friendly, courteous and the ramen comes out fast. The table I chose to sat had a smidgen of watermarks on it and they cleaned it up before I even noticed. Good attention to detail!
Price – 4/5. On Mondays they reduce all ramen prices by $2 which brings their signature Batten Ramen to about $8. Its not a bad price for a big bowl of ramen but the other items such as the onigiri is on the pricey side for what it gives.
Parking – Mall Lot (Free)
Just all around bad ramen. The broth had no flavor, the noodles were over cooked, and the pork didn't taste fresh. Very disappointing considering this is a ramen place.
The Ramen was incredibly HUGE. I love that they really fill up the broth. It's not ALL noodles either, they use lots of veggies and meat to keep each bite brothy yet fulfilling. The staff was very friendly and answered our questions well to how spicy their "spicy" dishes were going to be. I'd enjoyed this spot as it also has a nice atmosphere and you're not crammed, like other spots locally where your dinner comes with a side of hearing other customers slurp up their food. So far I think this is my favorite local Ramen spot. I'm not a Ramen expert, yet, so I can't tell you if it was out-of-this world from an expert perspective, but hey; I'd say these noodle bowls were pretty banging!
I just recently decided to start yelping again so I don't recall my first time here, but I enjoy this inexpensive ramen house especially during cold seasons. (Make sure you bring some cash as they only take Cash. Like really?)
My favorite so far has been Champon with Curry over rice combination.
A portion is just.. a bit too much for me to finish them all. I do eat a lot and for me to say the portion is huge.. trust me- you will be full if you pick this combination.
All in all, a decent ramen spot. I do not wish to give 3 stars, as it deserves rather 3.5. But since I could not give it 4 so I am only giving 3. Stay tuned for another update!
The Story: From time to time my brother would crave ramen. This is his favorite ramen joint and i personally enjoy it because it is not as packed as the other ones.
Food: I always opt for the Shoyu Ramen. They have weeknight specials and their bowls are huge! A large bowl is enough for me to hate myself for filling up my tummy too much.
Price: Ramen is pretty average price. I would go on a weekday to get more bang for your buck.
Decor: Seats about 25-30 people. Small place with homey decor. They also have a manga section.
Service: Quick and prompt. No Complaints there.
Parking & Finding the Place: You can park in the municipal lot and walk here. Sunday parking is free. If not, they have an app for parking in this town =)
Additional Thoughts: Cash Only!
This is my second time here and got the Batten Ramen with fried rice combination for $13. The broth was saltier than I remembered. A little too salty and couldn't finish my food even though I was ravenous. However, my coworker said the spicy seafood ramen was excellent!!
Space is small so wouldn't recommend coming with a big group.
Cash Only!!
Also it's been a year since I've been here and the kitchen staff is all non-Japanese except cashier… Maybe it's loosing a little bit of authenticity.
