This place is hard to review, because it has so much different stuff going on . . .some good, some not so good.
Sushi: good. Not great, which would be ok, but the prices are high.
Sushi lunch buffet: Good sushi, and a really really great value at $15.
Hibachi: pricey but decent. Hibachi is often more about the show than the food anyway.
Service: fair, servers are disinterested but not rude, they are are available but just seem rather dead.
Space: seems smaller even then you would guess from the outside, but it could just be that it is poorly laid out. Isles are narrow, and the space is dark and poorly lit. Decor is just ok.
I would give this place a 4 star for the sushi lunch buffet, and 3 stars for everything else.
I'm a fan of both the sushi and hibachi sides of this restaurant.
Overall, the service is very good, although some of the servers lack personality. On my most recent trip, my friend and I almost felt as though we were inconveniencing the waitress. However, the other servers and chefs have been quite good.
They have some creative appetizer choices that can't be missed in addition to the usual classics. I may even go back with someone some time to just have a few appetizers as a meal. They have a full bar as well.
The hibachi is one of the better ones I've been to. I'm partial to the fillet mignon hibachi, which comes with the usual salad, veggies, noodles, clear soup, and shrimp appetizer. However, it also has expanded options like pork, vegetarian, salmon and tuna as well. The food was delicious both at the table and the leftovers the following day. The chef got it all just right.
FYI – I'm only not commenting on the presentation from the hibachi chef because I've been to a million of them and the show is always similar. Kids would be entranced as always.
The sushi is also quite good. Very fresh and beautifully prepared in the right portion sizes, accompanied by expertly cooked rice. I have, however, gotten a couple pieces of white fish that were too tough to eat.
I was particularly pleased when I could order the "Combo Regular" and simply request that it be prepared without shellfish due to my allergy. Not only was it full of stuff I could eat, but they even substituted the clear soup for the miso soup since their miso is prepared with clams. Anyone with food allergies knows that this kind of attentiveness is a HUGE bonus!
One last huge bonus – they serve mochi ice cream! My fav!
This is a fun spot with a bunch of friends. The hibachi selections are typical but tasty nonetheless. What I really appreciate about this place is the excellent ventilation- you really don't leave smelling like hibachi all that much.
Make sure it's someone's birthday and they'll bring to the table a large deep fried ice cream to share! Yum!
I have been coming here since the early 2000's and it has not changed much. Same buffet, with the same items. Usually fresh but once in awhile you spot something that does not look too great.
Service is good and the prices are reasonable but the place needs some updating in both the décor and offerings.
Sorry Matsuya, you just didn't do it for me. Many locals of the area frequent Matsuya since it's an easy to get to hibachi experience. But it's just that…. easy. Not so much the experience. I remember going a few times in high school with friends and thinking I was SOOOOOO cool. But going back as a 20-something year old for new years, I just shook my head at high school Nicole. What was I thinking?
While I was back home for New Year's this year, most of my friends were out of town so I decided to third wheel real hard and just tag along with my brother and his girlfriend. We decided to keep it low key and just take a big group of friends (basically family) and go to hibachi and end the night drinking at home. The drinking at home was honestly better than eating at Matsuya.
The service was "meh" at the very best. They were slow to refill drinks… I mean its New Year's this is the one night you want to make sure you drink service is ROCKIN. They didn't even put enough chairs at our table for our party size. Yes, we were a pretty large party with about 12 or 14 of us, but if we say a number… that many chairs and that many place settings should be set up. That's logical… right?
As for the hibachi experience… it was average. I've experienced better. Nothing wowed me and the food was typical. It was an easy way to start New Year's and it was fun to be with family, but I don't think I will be heading back there any time soon. Not worth the money.
Let me start off by saying the service was really good, and our Hibachi chef was awesome, but the food itself was lacking flavor. The Korean style beef was dry and was lacking the garlic flavor as advertised in the menu. I did not try the sushi, so I can't say if it was good or not. They did bring us a free dessert, they thought it was someones birthday, but none of us said it was anyone's, lol. The dessert was actuallly the best part of the meal, the fried ice cream was awesome!!!
This place located in the heart of Saddle Brook needs a do-over. Still the same furnishings from years ago, or do they just look old?
Made a reservation for a Thursday evening and just a few people to be found. It wasn't my first choice either but with Xmas traffic on the highways in this area I didn't want to spend an hour getting to one of the finer dining establishments in Paramus.
Even though I had made a reservation and hardly anyone was there they made the entire process feel rushed, constantly asking for dishes when I wasn't done (yes I'm a slow eater) and asked me 3 times for check payment.
note. Food was fine, it was fresh although the same for the last 15 years. I favor the zombies and they don't skimp on the alcohol content. Would rather go elsewhere next time
