Asahi Sushi
“The most welcoming sushi place around, they have some of the freshest sushi in the area (only competitor that matches freshness is Wild Wasabi, but the ambiance is spectacular.”
“The restaurant is a byob which many people take advantage of.”
“As for maki, I cannot get enough of the dream roll, although sometimes it's a little heavy on the Panko.”

Sushi is everywhere, traditional Japanese cuisine in these parts is few and far between.
This place, although run by a Korean family is pretty close to what you could expect from a traditional Japanese restaurant. Walking in it's simple, cheesy asian knick knacks on the walls and plane tables. The one thing that stands out are the traditional Japanese dinner table where you walk up to small steps and sit on a flat pedestal type area and place your legs under the table, it's a small detail but unique none the less.
A very pleasent female server comes to greet you with a super huge welcoming smile and asks what type of beverage you would like, I recommend the hot green tea or the sweet iced tea ShopRite Couture brand I believe.
Apps: Amazing dashi tofu, savory and flavorful; Seaweed Salad; or the steamed gyoza
Sushi Rolls: Firecracker (spicy), Anything Tuna…They load the hell out of these rolls with fish;
They have great Korean options as well, Bulgogi Don, Hwe De Bab (Bed of rice with sliced fish and spicy sauce)
For dessert you have to get the mochi…so cheap and so tasty, it hurts.
After dinner you will get a big good bye and a huge smile, which will most likely make you tear up or come back to this place everyday.
***It is a BYO so you can easily run across the street to this delightful bar/liquorstore/hangout and they have a decent selection of coldr to room temp sake and soju to loosen up the joints
I have been coming to this place for a few years now. It's completely out of the way from where I live – but totally worth it.
There are so many sushi places in Bergen County but this one stands out to me for the following reasons:
1. I like the ambiance. It's never crowded and when it's just me and my husband, they will let us sit in the huge traditional booths where you take your shoes off, which I love. These seats can fit 6-8 people but they never tell us no just because it's two of us.
2. The tuna is always extremely fresh and their rolls are plentiful. They never skimp on fish content and I am obsessed with the asahi roll. It is one roll that serves as an entire meal. It's huge. It has shrimp tempura, tuna, tobiko, cucumber, avocado….makes me salivate just thinking about it. I also love the avocado & crab salad.
3. It's a family run business and they are so sweet. Great customer service – you never have to wait more than a few minutes for your food and they always act appreciative that you chose their restaurant to eat at.
Besides all that, the place is clean and I've never had anything bad off the menu.
Love this place!
I will have to give this place another try considering there are so many high star reviews and the fact that I went in 40 minutes before close. I mean what kind of sushi do you expect that late at night when the place is closing. Until then you get an average 3 stars.
