Sakaya is usually a spot I take out or grab a quick sushi dinner from in Roslyn. The sushi is pretty good and they have so many different options. I've been going to Sakaya for years and they also have hibachi tables, which could be fun if you're with a group!
I normally order a shrimp tempura roll with spicy tuna on top and a spicy tuna avocado roll. I do happen to like the shumai they have as well! Another roll that really is one of my favorites is the matsuri roll. It's a roll that's deep fried and crispy topped with spicy tuna. Really good!
Sakaya is really easy and quick. Pretty reasonably priced as well!
Chinese owned Japanese restaurant.
In general, I am not a fan of the many Japanese restaurants that are not Japanese owned – a lot of the mystique is lost somehow.
Hokkaido actually works out nicely and is one of the few places I will go to knowing that it is not a "true" Japanese place.
The food is top notch – no matter what style cuisine you are ordering – be it sushi or cooked dishes.
The service is good: fast and efficient.
The atmosphere is a little too bright for me, but not bad overall- the place is usually hopping and gets loud at times.
Prices are average if you've gone for sushi before.
Big parking in the rear and side.
Had dinner at Sakaya last night with an old friend. She and her husband eat here all the time and were raving about the food and service….so I was easily convinced to give it a shot.
We shared 4 rolls:
-LIE Roll: Spicy salmon, avocado, cucumber, crunch & caviar
-Irv's Roll: Tuna, salmon, shrimp, avocado & caviar
-Rising Sun Roll: Shrimp tempura & avocado topped with crabmeat, mayo & caviar
-Shrimp Avocado Roll
The rolls were gigantic….we were full before we finished everything…but we took one for the team and pushed through. Just say "no!" to leftovers.
Fish was fresh and the specialty rolls were delicious. The decor is very modern chic… clean…high ceilings…open space….separate area with a few hibachi tables…..comfy chairs. Friendly, attentive service…my water and tea were ALWAYS full.
As "Ahnold" says, "I'll be back".
First things first: the sushi at Sakaya is excellent. Superbly fresh, straightforward and generously portioned, it's among the best I have had. They have an ample menu that is strangely absent of nigiri, but if you ask for it they'll make it for you and charge the sashimi prices.
What I don't like about Sakaya is the slow, rude and strange service or the weird interior. If these things matter little to you, then you'll have a fabulous time. Me? I find waiting 30 minutes for my avocado salad while everyone else at my table has well past eaten theirs and is onto their sushi SUPER annoying, especially since the avocado salad is exactly like their house salads, just with sliced avocado on top of it. I also don't like having to ask for it four times, or having to wait nearly an hour for two — yes, two– pieces of nigiri when the other three people with me each had two rolls.
Also, the woman who clears the tables and replenishes the water maybe the singularly most rude person I have ever met. I asked her a question, and she practically screamed at me, I am not your waiter! along with shooting me a look of such disdain and annoyance I ate the rest of my meal in silence.
Now, I can say that the man with the thick accent is very jovial and kind, but he speaks really quickly and in such a confusing manner I can barely understand him. To his credit, he got everything right as we had a few allergies at our table (one to pork, one to shrimp), but he was slow with the service and we felt ignored for a lot of the time.
I'll likely return to Sakaya, but I guess I know better than to order anything besides the specials, as going a la carte seemed to confuse them and just took too bloody long.
This is American-Japanese restaurant. I kind of knew this is not authentic Japanese restaurant by looking at the menu and photos on yelp, but I went there anyway because rating on yelp was good.
Food was so-so. Fish seemed fresh. Blueberry mojito was awful. Wait staff were nice, and each staff pay good attention to not only the table they are serving, but other tables, too. Ambiance was not my taste, but it looked like they were trying to make fancy atmosphere. I didn't like the bluish lighting because everything look pale. If your seat is by the window, you won't be affected by the blue light. The water fall in the restaurant was nice.
The bad thing happened in the end. Before leaving the restaurant, I used ladies room and I was sure I locked the door. However, I didn't realize the lock was broken and a girl opened the door while I was using a toilet. That was embarrassing. I told a hostess about the broken lock, so hopefully the lock is fixed by the time they open today. (4/14/2014)
had a relatively speedy meal here before heading down south~
everything came as expected, the pieces of the rolls were decent sized– super thankful for that! we loved the yellowtail and scallion yummm
we also got the chicken yaki udon to share~ nothing special, it was tasty but i probably wouldn't get again since it wasn't very authentic.
overall, fantastic spot! if i'm in the area again, i would not mind stopping by again. ambiance was good and our waiter was very friendly and helpful 🙂
