Great concept of it was done right.
You can order an item if you don't see it but they won't make it just for you. So if you order it they make 10 of them and add to the conveyor belt. Pricing is the same. So if you happen to be there when no one is ordering you get the lame dishes over and over and over.
Sit at the bar so you get the stuff first also. Otherwise it's the same dried out piece of sushi for an hour
Decided to come here on a whim one day when my wife and I went to Garden State Plaza. This place gets a lot of credit for its cool, hip atmosphere that certainly draws you in. The food however, is mediocre at best.
The fun part about this place is the conveyor belt sushi. It's something that all sushi fans should try at least once. Should you try the conveyor belt experience for the first time here? Probably not. The sushi is average at best, and the hot food that you can order from the kitchen comes in tiny portions that are also a bit bland. Pricing is a bit high for what you're getting, but of course you're also paying for the experience and the atmosphere.
As far as mall food places goes, this is about what you can expect. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but it does the job.
I have been watching this place get built and was super excited to try it out.
When we first arrived, we waited a few minutes before we were seated though the place was pretty empty.
First off, this place is gorgeous on the inside. It looked spacious, it's bright, it looked clean, there is an open kitchen and you can see the sushi chefs preparing the sushi.
The booth we got was super spacious, which is appreciated. The waiter explained the ordering process, which just reminded me of East in Teaneck.
However, what I LOVE is that they have a "HELP!" button. It lights up the blue rod at your table to red and calls at the waiters, "TABLE 5!" so that they know to stop by. The waiter we had walked around a bit to make sure we were taken care of even if we didn't have the rod lit up.
Every thing is made to order, so it sometimes takes a while for certain dishes to come out, which is annoying when you're strapped for time.
If you're really strapped for time, it may be best to just grab sushi off the belt.
I tried the sesame garlic ramen ($4.50), which was really meh. It didn't look like the picture. The picture, the broth looked red. But the waiter was kind enough to bring me hot sauce and spices to add to it. BUT the problem was the broth was SUPER oily. Just too oily. I stuffed it down my throat because I didn't want it to go to waste.
For my sushi, I got the Salmon Selection ($6) which had a few pieces of sashimi, sushi, and the roll.
THIS WAS AMAZING. The fish was fresh and delicious. I loved it. This was my saving grace for the day and what makes me want to return eventually.
I was upset that they ran out of salmon sashimi when I wanted more. They only had salmon sushi left. I sometimes like just the sashimi because I want to cut out the carbs.
My friends also weren't huge on the kitchen foods while the sushi definitely impressed.
For 3 people (at least 2-3 plates each person), we only spent $38 before tip. So, it's not that pricey as long as you're not gorging yourself really. The most expensive plate is $7 each.
Another fact that I love, the sushi on the belt have TIMES stamped on them on when they've been on the belt too long. It was sad to watch someone throwing out the sushi but at the same time, it guarantees freshness, which I liked.
Definitely want to go back because I think once the kitchen gets their footing, this place will be out of this world — especially if the sushi was that good.
I was a little apprehensive trying a sushi place at the Garden State Plaza, but I thought, what the hell, I've eaten every restaurant in the place.
Let me just start off by saying that I understand this is a new restaurant and that there would be some flaws to the place.
With that being said, the service was pretty bad. There was no real hostess when you wait in line to be seated. There was a man dressed in a suit that seated us and he was very attentive and knowledgable in explaining the functionality of the restaurant and its menu. If anyone in the Bergen County has every been to East Restaurant in Teaneck, this is very similar, only less popular.
The restaurant decor seems to be very Asian influenced with a conveyer belt surrounding the restaurant with sushi plates for you to grab. However, going there at 8pm at night, you start to notice some of the plates that's been on the conveyer belt for a while. On the conveyer belt, there were different sushi plates along with salads and dessert/fruits. I didn't bother trying any fruits because why pay a price for a plate of fruit when I can get more at a supermarket (more on the prices later in the review).
Anyways, after the explanation of how the restaurant worked, a girl came over and took our food order that we wanted to order off the menu. This girl didn't bother telling us her name or taking our drink order, which I thought was weird. After a few more minutes of sitting there, our REAL waitress came and introduced herself and took our drink overs and reviewed what we ordered with the random girl. Our waitress was nice and came by often to check on us.
While we were waiting for the food we ordered off the menu, I noticed a couple that has been waiting outside to get seated for at least 7 minutes. No one in the restaurant acknowledged them and they weren't busy at all. If I was that couple, I would've most likely left after waiting that long to be seated with PLENTY of seats available.
The food itself? Overall it was ok. There are options on the menu that allows you to order food hot food if you're not into sushi.
As far as the prices go. Definitely NOT worth it. Each dish you pick off the conveyer belt is determined by what's in the sushi and the color plate that it's on. The cheapest plate starts at $3 which I think is overpriced because you're pretty much paying that for 6 SMALL pieces of an avocado roll. Your typical California roll was $4, which is bizarre. Everything adds up really quickly if you're not really paying attention to what you're picking off the conveyer belt.
Overall, I don't think I would come back here for sushi. I'm much better off going to another sushi restaurant and ordering their specialty rolls and getting BIG DELICIOUS pieces of sushi for $12-15 than paying $3 for one or two pieces of sushi/sashimi. I would recommend you going to East Restaurant in Teaneck if you're looking for a sushi conveyer belt experience.
Sad sushi train experience. My boyfriend and I came for the sushi train but ended up ordering our whole meal with a waitress… Not what you would like to do at a sushi train restaurant. The food itself is tasty, but pricey for the portion size. Take a look at the route of the conveyor and don't sit near the end of the line, especially if there are tables of families and people with big appetites ahead of you on the conveyor. If you are ordering takoyaki, make sure to do so first thing. We waited nearly an hour for our's. By 7:30, there were more food on the conveyor but mostly the selection of orange plates (the price of each dish is noted by the plate color). Had high hopes, but this particular Yo! Sushi restaurant was disappointing.
