  1. On a Saturday night we finally ventured to Trattoria Tra di Noi.  Chris had a gift voucher he had been hanging on to for a lonnnggg time- like a year!
He graciously picked us up from the 110th street station with his friend Mike, and drove us up to the Bronx-tour and everything included.
I was so excited to try this place I could barely contain myself.
We got there, and hung up our coats, and the greeting we were met with was nothing short of stellar.  They were friendly and kind, seating us at table number 7, Chris' cousins table.  We were met with an offer of wine, which we graciously accepted, as well as menus, and soft fresh bread.
We decided on starters, and I opted for the mussels, Todd opted out (meaning he was going to eat my food), Mike ordered the burrata and prosciutto, and Chris ordered the appetizer portion of linguine with clams.  With our white wine in hand, we settled in for our meal.  The mussels rocked-fresh, steamed perfectly and an awesome tomato sauce.  The burrata was homemade, fresh and buttery.  I could have polished a plate of that on my own.  Chris' linguine came in a huge portion, was cooked perfectly and alone would have made an incredible meal.  For mains we sampled the braciole with penne and tomato sauce, Chris ordered monkfish, and Mike got the tortellini with mushrooms and truffles.  Everything was incredible, but the braciole was the best.  It was my first time eating this Italian comfort food, and I could not eat 1/3 of it.  That's saying a lot for me.  Its rich and delicate, filling and complex.  The penne with it were perfectly cooked and coated in a homey tomato sauce.  But the Braciole won the vote of the masses.  We packed up the braciole and Chris' potatoes and veggies and turned our attention to dessert.
The limoncello truffle ice cream, the cappuccino truffle, and the tiramisu hit the table.  Mike and I decided on sambuca and espresso.  I didn't understand the whole concept so I ended up with an obscene amount of sambuca in my glass and later in my tummy.  It' s one of those combinations that I crave daily now. The desserts were amazing, especially the limoncello.
Overall this meal is one I want every time I'm hungry.  I want braciole now every time I go to an Italian restaurant.  Unfortunately, I don't order it because I'm scared it will disappoint me.  I will just wait until I go to Trattoria.  It's better that way.

  2. Of all the italian restaurants that I've been in the US (and the list is extensive) this is one of my top-3. The food is great and the service is very good ! Located on Bronx little Italy, they surely do know how to cook authentic without the need of putting garlic everywhere!

  3. awesome, family-owned restaurant. everything was wonderfully fresh and so full of flavor. the fresh bread when you first sit at your table- mmmmm! so hot and composed of supple clouds of bread with a fabulous flaky crust.

the marinara and carbonara sauces were everything you'd want them to be and the fried calamari was light and crisp. veal parmigiana was tasty and the string beans sauteed with the perfect amount of garlicky goodness.

today's lunch was my first trip and I will definitely be back for more. the portions were very generous and when asked about dessert there was no way I could even take another bite, but I was more than satisfied! mmm mmm good

  4. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend Tra di Noi.  They've shifted service to just a sister or 2 running the show and it is clear they don't have experience running a restaurant.  Every time I've gone in, they're fussing endlessly over reservations, turning people down at the door for no reason, and making people wait unnecessarily long for tables even when they have a reservation.  If reservations are that difficult for you, why even offer them?  Last time was the last straw, where they rushed me and my girlfriend out so they could take our table.  Mind you there were no less than 3 tables open already.  Their lack of knowledge is costing this place money, and the brusque way they go about their jobs is costing this place customers.

To make matters worse, I've noticed the food slide down in terms of both quality and quantity.  This has been happening the last few times I've come but I'll just highlight the last visit.  We paid $12 for the mozzarella caprese appetizer, which consisted of 4 tiny slices of tomato and slivers of mozzarella.  The tomato had little flavor.  The mozzarella was good, but they buy it down the block at Casa della Mozzarella like most restaurants in the neighborhood, all of which will give you double the portion here for the same price.  The red snapper oreganata was the small filet of fish I've ever been served in a restaurant.  The piece was very thin and only 5" long at best.  The breadcrumbs were very sparse, making it basically just fish sauteed in a pain with breadcrumbs thrown on top.  Even worse it had the distinct overly-fishy flavor of something that was not fresh (I have red snapper a lot so I can tell when it's not fresh).

The chef/owner, instead of focusing on the food in the kitchen, bothered me about waiting by the bathroom door last time I was in here.  These guys are going off the rails and I sincerely hope they get it together.  I may try again in the distant future as I had some good meals here in the past, but otherwise I'll stick to the other options in the neighborhood.

  5. This is a quiet restaurant which I loved as you can actually have a conversation. The service was very kind and attentive. I arrived late to dinner with friends. I ate the fried calamari which was fresh, flavorful, and the fried batter was light and well salted. I shared the lasagna with my husband.  It was flavorful but was a little too rich and heavy for me with the meat ragu as a base. It was very good but I prefer my own lasagna which I feel is lighter, with better quality cheese, and a simpler tomato sauce.  I felt the food was solid but nothing to write home about, and was overpriced. If I did go back I would try a lighter dish and dessert. The company could not be better and the service was warm and kind.

  6. As someone who grew up in this neck of the woods and coming from my mom who was
Born and raised in this section of the Bronx, knowing all the amazing  restaurants and pastry shops this is by far on top of the places that need to be checked out! Its small quaint homestyle feel with a dim romantic feel is serving up some of the best home style Italian cooking the Bronx has to offer! This place is family owned which makes it that much more Authentic.  The staff is extremely friendly and cater
To all your needs! The food
Is amazing and proportions and generous and amazing down to the last drop! Each item on the menu is fresh and made to order  this will not be a place that will disappoint !

  7. It was our lucky day that after visiting the zoo we happen to exit on the Southern Blvd/Belmont neighborhood side. We were headed up to the Botanical Gardens but we were starving. After a quick Yelp I noticed a bunch of restaurants in the area. "Hmmm" I said, " Seems to be a lot of Italian restaurants"   Well, not only did we stumble upon Bronx Little Italy (NY's better one) but on Trattoria Tra di Noi and a nice day just got better.  Hubby and I have a habit of sharing so we can try more new dishes. So I ordered the Fettuccine Carbonara and hubby ordered the Pollo alla Scarpariello ( chicken w/Rosemary,white wine & garlic) which came with potatoes and French cut string beans.  Both dishes were very, very good.  The carbonara ( with fresh fettuccine al dente) had a nice light sauce, not the overly creamy sauce that most other places serve. The bacon was rough chopped and meaty. The Scarpariello was excellent!! The chicken medallions were lightly dredged in flour and perfectly sautéed in the wine sauce that had chopped red peppers with whole cloves of garlic and rosemary.  The potatoes seemed to have been roasted but left tender and the string beans lightly streamed.  I also had a cappuccino and that very good as well. We had come at the tail end of a busy Sunday lunch so it was a bit crowed.  Regardless, service was good with water filling and follow up.  What I really liked was that a few people who came in and some of the tables that were already there were greeted warmly by name showing to me that this establishment is part of a close neighborhood where the owners, workers and patrons live amongst each other.  That warmed my heart, and made me vow to come back soon to both Tra di Noi and the Belmont/Little Italy neighborhood.

  8. This reminded me of the Italian restaurant Billy Joel sings about. I've only been to three restaurants on Arthur Avenue, but I think this is the best one!
It's a great value.  It's great tasting food served on red and white checkered tablecloths without a fancy presentation.

The baby clams antipasti had the most delicious sauce. My friend had to ask for more bread to sop the sauce up! Then we shared the calamari fritti which was amazing. Our entrees were also shared because we wanted to get the big picture and we wanted leftovers!  We got both. The veal Marsala with mushrooms was so tasty.  The special risotto was cooked to perfection.  But the best was the lasagne bolognese.  My goal is to someday make a bolognese sauce that tastes like this. YUM!

Truly wonderfully cooked food in a family owned restaurant with very friendly and happy people working there.
