I can't seem to agree with some of my fellow Yelpers. The food was bland — I got the chicken Marsala and it definitely was under seasoned IF seasoned at all. The only thing tasty on my plate with the little potato croquette. The bolognese sauce on my side pene pasta was terribly salty, and had barely any tomato flavor. Definitely wouldn't recommend this place for anyone craving some "real" italian food.
Great service and great food. Its like a hidden gem in Bayside. Came here for my moms birthday and we were not let down. The prices may be a little steep, but they give you portions that are worth the price. Unlike other restaurants who give you microscopic portions for astronomical prices. Everything tasted delicious with the exception of the tomato sauce. It tasted bland and a little basic. Considering that everything else tasted great, the regular tomato sauce was a little bit of a let down. Otherwise, this is a great place to stop in for a great meal!
Portions here are HUGE. I regret not doggy-bagging mine to go.
But the food itself is mediocre. I ordered the zuppa di pesce because I love fra diavalo sauce over anything especially with seafood.
Huge chunks of shrimp, clams, and calamari, but they were all pretty tasteless.
Also shared a dozen baked clams with my friend. Nothing to write home about.
If you get wines by the glass, they will only serve you house.
Place was practically empty when we got there. The waiters are friendly but they go on their phones in front of you until you call them over. So unprofessional!
We were the only ones in for a late lunch when they opened. I was able to basically make my own pasta entree which was very nice of them. Their olive oil, seasoning, and garlic dip with bread is a new favorite of mine. We had their eggplant as an appetizer which was new for me to try and excellent, especially if you're vegetarian. The staff was super kind and made us feel very welcomed. 🙂 I'd visit again!
Food: mediocre, at best. I liked the angel hair in garlic and oil though, that had strong flavor. The veal looked exceptional, but they ran out of their special steak that evening. I was so sad.
Service: food took over an hour to arrive. This made it lose one star. We were also basically ignored for a long time before any of the servers noticed…
Decor: quite clean and neat.
Sadly, this place is unlikely to get a second visit from me.
If I could I would give Jimmy's Trattoria more than 5 stars! This is our go to restaurant for special occasions.
I came to this restaurant when it use to be called Maria's Trattoria. This is when I first met Jimmy who worked there at the time. He has since taken over the restaurant, renovated and expanded tremendously. The most important thing has not changed over the years…..the quality of food.
I will never forget many many years ago my girlfriends and myself were all single and decided to spend Valentines Day together. We had reservations for a place in Forest Hills that turned out to be a disaster and we ended up walking out of the restaurant it was so terrible. I suggested coming to Maria's Trattoria since I knew the food was amazing. When we arrived Jimmy asked if we had reservations because at the time the restaurant was much smaller and it was reservations only on the biggest dining out day. I explained our situation and Jimmy said to us we can't turn down 4 beautiful ladies on Valentine's Day. He managed to set up a table for us and we had a fantastic evening. Since then I knew he was such a kind hearted man.
We are always greeted at the door by a handshake from Jimmy and he let's us decide where we want to sit. It is a intimate and romantic setting. Dim lights, white linens and soft yellow painted walls. I get excited when he comes to the table to give us the daily specials. Although I must confess I order the same thing EVERY TIME I come here…the chicken francese. Jimmy is so descriptive when he explains the specials, he not only tells you what it is but explains all the ingredients and how it is made. You can feel his passion for food. He always ends it saying I can make what ever you like as long as we have the ingredients.
On this occasion I tried one of the specials which was a butternut squash soup. It was excellent! Hot, smooth, creamy, bright in color, hints of cinnamon and nutmeg and served with almond slices. My husband wanted the stuffed mushrooms but he always wanted to add prosciutto to it. Jimmy said no problem I can make you our grilled portobello mushroom stuffed with spinach and topped with melted mozzarella cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette glaze. To that we will add your prosciutto. I watched my husband eat his appetizer with such pleasure. He closed his eyes and said "HHHMMMM It feels as though a flavor bomb just went off in my stomach!"
We hardly ever make it to dessert because the portions are big but I like to order a cappuccino. I eat half my dinner and take the other half home for a 2nd meal. It it just as good the next day.
Several of the wait staff has been working at Jimmy's for a long time. It says something to me knowing how dedicated they are to their jobs and to Jimmy. Jimmy's Trattoria catered a birthday party for us once and all our guests were happy. They now have a private party room and I hope one day to host a party there.
Bravo Jimmy's Trattoria! Keep doing what you do so that we can enjoy your food and good company for many more years to come!
