  1. As De la soul says, Its just me, myself and I (for ordering)… love the look of the this place but I have a love/hate relationship with Bar Veloce

    Love:
    Its dark and romantical..
The bar is long and looks fashionable
    Great cheeses and small plates
Beside a nice wine list they have Grappas

    Hate:
How are you getting cozy on those high stools?
    Serving yourself kinda sucks
Ordering is a challenge when its crowded

I like to come here and order a nice chianti before a train ride back to the burbs. Its best to get here when they first open because when its quitting time, its gonna be crowded.

  2. Great little wine bar. Met up with some friends for a bday, only stayed for about 2 glasses of vino but had a nice time while I was there.

  3. A wine bar which seems to bring in the ladies.  I can go with that.  Stopped by briefly this evening.  No beer on tap but a well thought out cocktail program and an extensive wine list.  I had a Campari Americano which was very nice.  Background music was set low – something jazzy – not pop.  Bartender was very professional.

Pretty place.  Worth a try if you are in the neighborhood.  Not a place to go if you want a beer.

  4. Nice low-key wine bar – small and casual.  The bartender gave me an excellent recommendation for a white that I would absolutely order again.  Also, they have a carbonated red wine on the menu, which I think is super unique and it was oddly refreshing.

  5. The original plan was to go to Terroir Wine Bar in the East Village for a few glasses, but Bar Veloce was less of a walk. To the tune of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time": "I must confess that my laziness is telling me that wine is wine. So hit me with that Riesling one more time." The funny button below is my tip jar.

Anyway, Bar Veloce was hopping at about 11 PM on a Saturday night, but we were able to grab two seats at the bar. The bartenders are well trained, and they're required to wear suits. My boyfriend and I ordered a glass of the Reisling and a glass of the soave, which I had never tried before.

I loved the soave and think it's a great summer sipper. The descriptions on the wine menu are very helpful, and I was able to read about a lot of Italian wines that I've never tried before. I'm usually more into wines from California and South America.

The atmosphere seems to have a "speed" theme with vintage posters of BMW ads and lamps made from aviator sunglasses I guess a person might wear while riding a motorcycle or Vespa. I think the televisions were playing an avant-garde Italian film, but it was difficult to tell.

Though I'd still love to try Terroir, I was pleased with our detour to Bar Veloce and think the prices are reasonable. I'd definitely return if in the neighborhood.

  6. Meh…that was my thought as I left this wine bar last night.  Place is ok for the neighborhood, but not great when compared to much better wine bars like Anfora, Terroir, Lelabar, Corkbuzz & Vin Sur Vingt.

Maybe it's cause I'm a Sommelier (for fun) and I'm very picky, but I thought their wine list was just ok, and frankly, fairly pricey for the quality of the wine & food.

I understand it's an Italian wine bar and only serve Italian wines, and they had some of the better regions represented like Piedmont (Barolo & Barbaresco) and Alto Adige, and had a decent selection of Brunello, and was surprised that they actually had Franciacorta (sparkling made in the Champagne-style, not like Prosecco), but it's just that the wines they had from those regions were not from great producers, which is reflected in the wine quality, in my opinion.

And as far as the food, I thought it was just ok as well.  The Bruschetta Veloce (white anchovy, mozzarella & pesto) was pretty good, but didn't blow me out of the water like Anfora's Ricotta Bruschetta, as well as the truffle cheese panini, and the ham & cheese finger sandwich was plain white bread with the crust removed with ham, cheese (couldn't taste the cheese) and tomato (see my pic).  Wasn't flavorful, and frankly, really dull.  Basically felt like a 10-yr old in grade school eating a sandwich out of a Ziploc bag that my mom made for me.

The ambiance is very good though actually and so is the service.

Overall, this place is a good spot for the neighborhood if you don't feel like going very far and just want to grab some wine in a nice setting.  Better than other wine options in the neighborhood, but not as good as other wine bars in the city.

  7. On the rush of a high that follows the conclusion of Sleep No More, I needed to find a low-key place to unwind over a good glass of wine and a little food. Though I was suspicious of any sleek spot in Chelsea fitting that particular bill (especially post-Pride) Bar Veloce ended up being an excellent choice.

Though the decor and seats were a bit Euro-cool for my taste, the evening was nevertheless comfortable. What's better than a generous meat and cheese platter, an arugula salad dressed with just-right proportions of lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and parmesan, and a deep Italian wine list with generous pours? Pretty much nothing, except for the lovely gentleman behind the bar. It's rare to get sophisticated, subdued, and elegant service in my corner of the Pacific Northwest; it's the sometime-aspect of dining out in NYC that I love, and he made a casual night feel exalted.

Wine pours are generous, the by-the-glass list is strong, and that's just what I need to mentally note this addition to my list of dependable wine bars for my next NYC visit.

  8. Looking to feel classy?  This is a not bad place to be.  Come here to relax, or have a nice chat with friends.

Nice quiet atmosphere; went on a Sunday night.

Staff was very friendly and are knowledgeable.  If you don't know what you want to drink, they give great recommendations.

Minus:  The seats not at the center bar are self serve.  And they are REALLY high.  No idea why somebody thought that was a good design.
