I spotted this place from across the street, and what caught my eye was the sign that said Mexican charbroiled grill. It immediately conjured memories of my years in LA and specifically my amigo Jesse and his massive all day Mexican BBQ parties, grilling marinaded chicken, skirt steak and seafood on a massive 6×6 grill and mesquite charcoal. Fire grilled food, apart from baked dishes and stews, is generally far superior in both flavor and chemistry.
Unfortunately after being seated for lunch, I noticed the menu said char-cooked selections weren't available during the winter season, which I guess means they don't have a BBQ out back until it gets warmer. Such a shame. But I went ahead and ordered a trio of tacos, side of beans and a coke. It was then I took in the place. It's not quite accurate to say the front is a gift shop. It is accurate to say that upon entering, there's a section on the left that contains some glass cases with "who knows what." But on the right are tables. The tables continue on the right, but the left becomes a full service 6-seat bar, plastered with signs promoting happy hour. This is good news for those who like cocktails with their tacos, but I'm not sure it's a nightlife destination.
As for the food:
– You don't get chips/salsa
– You do get both a red and green salsa to go with your dish. Ho hum.
– As mentioned before, choices aren't too exotic: beef, chicken, etc.
– The tacos are served open face on small, double ply corn tortillas – street style (not the wrapped pods you get at nearby joints).
– The flavors are decent and the meat isn't as fatty/steamed as some other places I've tried nearby. That said, they weren't crave-worthy either.
– The beans were great… like grandma would make, if she were Mexican and not Welsh.
To be fair, I was there for lunch and didn't try any of there more complex entrees. And interestingly, two nearby tables of latino guys ordered beers and big breakfast platters at 1:30 p.m. – which could be an indicator of better menu strategies. In fact, I looked at the to-go menu and a platter of eggs, chorizo, rice, beans and tortillas is only $4.75, so I'll definitely try it again.
I just hope they have a guy out back with a BBQ ready to grill.
