Solid 3, if not 3.5, stars.
Spacious, tasty drinks and food.
Happy hour and daily drink specials. Tuesday's special was a pitcher of some tasty, tropical concoction for $40! A PITCHER. Two thumbs up!
Also want to mention what a chill, local crowd Cantina seems to attract. It was an notable surprise NOT to find tourists, tunnel-crossers and/or young party kids up on Cantina's picturesque rooftop. Happy surprise, indeed!
Cantina won't rocks your socks off — but it's a solid choice for an outdoor venue (with open and covered space) in the summer.
(The dinner service was a bit slow when we went — though our server was extremely pleasant — but they seemed very short-staffed that day. Hopefully it's not the norm.)
I had a great experience here at a private work event. The margaritas were so good! If we wanted more or less alcohol in them, they were accommodating.
The staff was very friendly.
The venue was nice – to be honest the views were pretty blocked, but overall I loved it. The decor was great! It was very bright and summery with great colors and lighting. They have some couches to sit on, etc.
The appetizers were good – my favorite was the mini burgers. OMG – they were cooked perfectly, which is rare for a mini burger. I also tried the mini caprese bites and the mushroom flat bread – all very good.
I would definitely come back on my own.
surprised at the terrible ratings.
came here during happy hour and had a great time. The space is hugeee and the environment is unpretentious.
the food was surprisingly delicious– we ordered the empanadas and the guacamole and they were so delicious.
they had a 2 for 1 margaritas during happy hour. I went with the fruity drinks and I'm glad I did- it was some passionfruit drink and had a flower in it.
the service was great too –the manager kept checking up on us, and in the end offered to take a picture of our group.
*** quick tip if you want a full on meal, you have to make reservations to sit in the tables. Otherwise if you come for drinks you can sit in the lounge area. They offer small snacks if you're hungry.
The view here is
Spectacular!! Came here for a bday everyones vegetarian. Not as many options as on the menu online but there were a few. The guacamole was good but they use max 2 avocados per 14$ order. There was chicheron in the guac which is a pigs skin also not on the menu discription. I found all the drinks to be great tasting but weak compared to other places. We had: sangria, passion margharita, jalepeno margarita. They didn't use fresh jalepenos like they should and the passion margharita had no tequila. The fish tacos were ok they lacked seasoning or spice. There was caviar and slaw not listed on the menu in the dish. The street corn was flavorful! The sea bass they were out of and they were out of bronzino. We didn't have much options but enjoyed the night with friends.
Came here for the spring launch in which we were able to taste the full menu including drinks. We weren't charged, so I can't attest to the previous reviews which state that water is $5.
Service:
All staff members were very friendly.
Food:
Had the guacamole trio. All of hem were good, but my favorite was the guac with charred habanero pepper. So good! I'd comeback just for that!
The appetizer with tuna and avocado was delicious!
The corn with cheese, spices, and lime was scrumptious. The corn was juicy and came right off. The only thing about eating corn is that you really need floss handy because it sticks in between your teeth 🙂
I had a mushroom empanada with corn and cheese. It was really good!
The grilled squid was one of my favorites.
Drinks:
I had gin and soda with lime juice. It was good (and strong). My friends had the cocktails off the menu which were sweet but they enjoyed them.
Location:
The open roof is really nice. There's a great view and you can breathe in fresh air.
I'll be back, even if it's just for that habanero guacamole 🙂
This place isn't bad but it isn't amazing, and I'll tell you why it isn't amazing.
Finding the door to get to this place is rather confusing, each floor seems to have a different venue so I almost went into the wrong party, but finally when I found door B it was easy to get into there was barely any lines [ask for Daryll at the door he is super helpful, expect a cover charge if you are a guy].
when I finally got passed the huge flights of stairs and entered this rooftop, I was pleasantly surprised to see it wasn't grossly packed like a can of sardines. The main bar is right by the dance floor inside which was pretty spacious and there was cute Halloween decorations. Be prepared to drop 5 bucks if you want just water, and drinks are pricy if you do not go during happy hour.
The table section inside was jam packed with random girls who probably did not know each other, but they drank with the promoters, which is typical for NYC.
The best part about this place is the space but on the patio/rooftop which was freezing! I really did like the fact that it was so easy to get a table [no you don't need bottle service to sit down]. I also loved the music ranging from house music, reggaeton and top 40 hits, the dj really made the party fun and he was very interactive with the crowd giving shout outs left and right. I also like that there is an even ratio of girls to guys with all different backgrounds, just one big fun melting pot. No over pretentious jerks or youngsters, it was a pleasant surprise.
I am taking two stars off for cleanliness, there was random drinks everywhere on all tables [plus a place that serves in plastic cups is not very appealing], ugh and the spilled stuff on the floor and no staff or security around the rooftop from where I sat at least was not great either.
I would probably come back here for happy hour or just on a special occasion only, I wouldn't go out of my way here to party on the regular. For a place such as this out of everything else, it simply lacks luxury.
The Quick: Fairly large rooftop with delicious margaritas and a fun Mexican flair. Not overly convenient to get to.
The Details: I enjoyed a networking happy hour at Cantina that featured great drink specials and good company. We didn't eat sadly so I cannot comment on the food but the margaritas with fresh jalapeños (on request) were good and HOT.
The rooftop was large and semi covered for bad weather which was nice. It was fairly out of the way from the subway so I likely wouldn't return unless there was another event.
The Damage: Our happy hour specials included $5-$8 drinks for wine, liquor, and margs
My twin brother and I threw a killer private birthday party here at Cantina Rooftop this past weekend and it was so perfect. Cantina's event planner Ryan helped us coordinate the whole thing. They opened early for our party (at 3pm), had a full staff to make sure our guests (around 75pple) were happy and having a great time. Best part was that the space was closed to the public.
The weather was amazing for mid-April, so we were lucky in the fact that we got to have the rooftop fully open and the sun shining down. The margaritas and Coronas were flowing, and the giants party bowls of guac were a huge hit! Cantina had a staff behind the bar, at coat check, plenty of busboys cleaning up from our appetizers and drinks. Everything was really on point. Ryan checked in with us throughout the afternoon and made sure we were having a good time.
The space was fairly big, had some great couches to chill out on and soak up the sun! Our party was mainly here to drink, but we had pre-ordered just some platters and passed appetizers and what I had was good! We were even able to bring our own friends to DJ the party which was really a huge plus. They had the ability for us to put on their house music too.
They need to re-do the elevator that takes you to the rooftop, or at least get it fixed! Each time I rode it was a little scary, since it jumped when it started and stopped! It's only on the 5th floor or so, so it's not like you get this killer view of the skyline, especially being West of 11th Ave, you're not looking at much, but hey, rooftops in NYC are hard to come-by, so you take what you get!
I think you should open earlier on weekends for some day drinking festivities!
