  1. This place has been here forever and finally after 25 years living in Bergen County and recently moving to Edgewater, my family and I decided to give this place a try.

We had a 8:30 reservation and got there at 8:25 and it was packed.  We finally got a seat at 9pm, which made me a little annoyed because I guess a half hour off isn't bad.  Just be prepared to know if you are in a rush, this place may not be for you.

We sat down upstairs and preferred that since downstairs was kind of tight and noisy.  We were greeted with a delicious bread basket that contained hot bread.  It was delicious, definitely try the onion bread.  I asked for some more and they gave me two loaves!

We ordered a couple of appetizers (French onion soup, angry spicy mussels, bacon slice, and fried chicken livers).  All tasted good but I wouldn't say any were the best I ever had.  For main dishes my father and I shared a porterhouse for 2, and I must say it seemed like it was for 3 people.  Their steaks are generously portioned especially compared to NYC steak places and for the price.  My mother got the duck which she said she liked how they rendered a lot of the fat.  My fiancé got the rib eye and finished it all.  We ordered the broccoli rabe and I must say I was very disappointed with it.  It was undercooked and not seasoned well leaving a more than usual bitter taste.   We were pretty stuffed and didn't order any dessert but they still brought out whipped cream with strawberries for my fiancé's birthday which was sweet.

All in all, I was leaning towards a 3.5, but the service and portion sizes and bread brought it to a 4!  I would come back again.

  2. Been here twice now.  The food was excellent, though I think a little overpriced.  The bacon app, salads, calamari, desserts, and steaks and sides were all top notch.  Probably the best hash browns I've ever had.  My steak was a perfect med-rare.  My girlfriend's veal chop was rare, should have been med-rare.  Had to send it back.  I'm okay with that.  Anyway, I didn't have a problem with the price of the steaks.  I know prime beef is super expensive.  But if you pay $16 for kids Penne with butter, the 8 year old shouldn't look at it and say "This isn't enough food."  It came out on an 8 inch salad plate.  If you don't want to offer kids portions, just take them off the menu.  That was just wrong.

Anyway, I was impressed by the service at the bar.  I was unimpressed by the service at the table.  I actually wanted to go 2 stars, but the food was too good.  So, I had a martini at the bar before dinner, I believe the gin was called Masters.   The bartender had suggested Masters as a less botanical gin, and great for martinis.  I had never had it before.  So, when I ordered my second martini, now at the table, I couldn't remember the name of the gin.  The server suggested that maybe it was Bulldog.  I told him I thought it was something else.  So he said he could look it up and see what I had had before.  Okay,  So when it came out it he had put a lemon on it, instead of a twist.  Anyone who's been server for a day should know you don't bring a martini with a lemon.  He must have thought I was someone that could be treated  like a jerk.  So, I asked him what gin he had brought me, and he said Bulldog.  You know what, don't do that to me.  If you don't have time to ask the bartender, don't just order whatever YOU think I should be drinking and stick a lemon on it.  I'm actually getting heated just thinking about this.  Bulldog and Masters are completely different gins, and it's not like I was ordering a gin and tonic at a barbecue.  In the end, I had to go to the bar myself, where the bartender remembered exactly what I was drinking and brought it out to me. Our server was just an order taker, not a professional server.  For those of you that have never worked at a high end restaurant, let me just tell you that saying a server isn't professional is an an insult.

My girlfriend's parents have been going to The River Palm Terrace for over 30 years.  Her dad actually called 2 weeks in advance to reserve his end cut of prime rib.  Think that's a little neurotic?  Well, he told me on other occasions he has called two days in advance and been told that the end cuts were already reserved.  That's the kind of steak house this is.  That's the kind of customers that had invited us to dinner.  So, this family is not a bunch of newbs who are going to a steakhouse for their first time.  They've been good customers there probably since before I was born, and this server made us feel like a second class table.

    The tab:
    $615.00 dinner
    $120.00 automatic gratuity
$60.00 bar before dinner (4 drinks)
    $795.00 total for 6 adults, 3 kids.

I guess that's not crazy money.  We didn't drink bottled wine that night, so I guess that's why it was a little more reasonable in price.  But with the reputation that the River Palm Terrace has, I expected better service.  Been there twice, I'll try them one more time.

  3. Great porter house steak but from several times of eating here, their seafood is pretty delicious too.  It's been years since I've enjoyed this old timer 🙂  has a nice bar and you can even find amazing spicy tuna rolls here!
Atmosphere is somewhat outdated with old time's charms but taste of food makes up for any mishaps in the decore.  Also offers valet service.

  4. So I came here for a birthday celebration, about 20 people , on their defense the birthday girl didn't expect for everyone to show up so we got cramped in a corner near the kitchen and with my luck I was the one that kept getting pushed by the waiters every time they passed by…

Anyway , I was glad this restaurant serves bread and salad , I dislike going to restaurants that only serve bread ,especially when you have to pay for side orders…

    Thank you for that…

Now for the meal , I actually ordered a steak for 2 people , 4 people actually ate out of it …

    Side orders included
French fries – nice and crunchy
Sauteed spinach— can't go wrong with spinach
Broccoli- loved it , I hate when broccoli gets overcooked (it's already dead no need to also kill the vitamins)

For drinks, I got a mojito no bueno but I am aware that is a steakhouse so wine or a martini would of been better … Therefore we decided to order sangria…
I might say it was good and a great choice…

Steak — didn't steal the show. The side orders and sangria did…
I ordered my steak medium well and it was well done almost tough to chew …. It was celebration and not my choice , I still stick with Ruth Chris although is a chain one of the best steaks I've had thus far…

  5. Disappointed at best. The fillet mignon was good and worth ordering but in this millennium, culinary arts are marked by innovation and going beyond expectations. Neither is accomplished here. The tuna was not of top quality and is not to be ordered. The sides were heavy on butter and salt and light of flavor. Service was fine and the valet parking is convenient.
I understand that sometimes we want a traditional dining experience with simple food and adjust expectations accordingly but if you're looking for anything above that, then this is not the place.

  6. My coworkers and I were heading to NYC for a signing at a comic shop, so for dinner we wanted to try a steakhouse. Everyone raves about this place. We did try to call in a reservation for the same day, but it didn't happen. Not that shocking really.

So we decided to wing it and went anyway. We managed to get three seats at the bar. This worked out well as we could eat there too, so maybe that's the way to go.

We ordered the Tomahawk steak, the sliced filet mignon, multiple martinis, and a death by chocolate cake. Everything was perfect. My mignon was outstanding. Super tender, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. The cake was also unreal.

Service is pretty good, 0 complaints there.

The place reminds me of every 80's movie  set in Jersey, and this is a good thing. You must eat here at least once.

  7. Note to self – don't come here on a holiday, even Mother's Day and even with a reservation.

Waited 20 min. Finally got seated and when I went to order my entree, I was told they were out of that fish. I asked for a menu, finally ordered the scallops and was told they were out of scallops. First, it wasn't even 7:30pm. Second, it would've helped to tell me what they were out of so I knew what my real choices were. However, I get that everyone was REALLY BUSY – it was no joke how everyone was hustling.

But after the appetizers came out, the server came back and told us that they were out of the side of cauliflower that we ordered!

Overall I enjoyed all the food especially the octopus app, the side of mushroom caps, and surprisingly the sushi was a delicious surprise – who would've known at a steak place. Will stick to coming here on an off night.

  8. The food was divine at The River Palm Terrace. We ordered sushi and the crab cakes to start. Both were really tasty. We had a pitcher of Red Sangria and although strong, I have had better. I ordered the risotto and although a bit pricey, it was well worth the cost. My fiancee ordered a steak with spinach on the side. The steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Like many other Yelpers noted previously, the service is a bit off. At one point, there was a change in or actual waiter yet we did not know. We were waiting for close to 10 minutes with no removal of our dinner plates and no questions asked regarding dessert, just folks passing us by. That was the downside of the visit but the food was great. In all honesty, I am particular about my food and service so we will not be back. The four stars is for the food.
