Bed-Stuy Fish Fry
“Every time I've come into this place the collard greens and mac and cheese has always been made to the tee…”
“I don't care about the wait or the attitude lol my honey BBQ shrimp with collard greens and candied yams with a side of potato salad ALWAYS hit the spot.”
“The only reason this doesn't get a 5 is because it's very small and tends to get crowded and the wait time can be a little long.”

Yum! I don't know why Rus and I waited so long to visit BedStuy Fish Fry.
We recently headed there on a snowy weekend afternoon. The interior is pretty small, but it's adorned with a few tables and chairs. We happened to walk in when they weren't too crowded, but a line quickly formed behind us. We ordered fried whiting, chicken and shrimp. Also got sides of the macaroni and cheese and collard greens. We waited for at least 45 minutes for our order. While we waited, we saw one gentleman who ordered enough to feed a banquet of people (so I guess they do catering orders).
Numbers are usually called out of order, so don't be alarmed if you seem to have been skipped. Heads up: this location is cash only.
Once we got our food, we hustled back out into the cold and made our way home to feast on our fish fry. The seafood was really good! I loved the crispiness of the shrimp, and the fish was meaty and delicious. Nothing was too salty. I ate the last of the collard greens (so good), and the macaroni and cheese was pretty good too (but a little bit on the mushier side). The fried chicken was ok (on a scale of 1 to 5, I'd give it a 2.5). It was rather chewy and I think I've had better at the local Chinese food joint, that said, I'm the one that ordered chicken from a Fish Fry place. They didn't have oxtails while we were there, or Rasta Pasta, but we'll definitely be going back to get our Fish Fry fix.
Be patient, trust me, it's worth it!
3 Stars for the Fish & Shrimp Fry!
* All Fish Fried Whiting & All Shrimp of which both are battered and seasoned perfectly.
* Mac & Cheese – very, very good.
* Potato Salad – Meh – Not bad, not great.
* Collard Greens – Meh forget about it.
* Prices are decent
Management, the Customer Service team set-up for walk-In /Call -In orders for take-out is crying out for your attention and has been for the last few years! Clearly the way the orders are processed should be reviewed for some strategic thinking and reorganization in order to not have your call-in customers standing on the same line as your walk-in customers with up to 45 minutes additional in wait time.
There is not enough comfortable dining in room to enjoy your food without having someone else's rear-end all up in your plate in my opinion.
In addition the standing / waiting room is chaotic with no real system in place to who gets their orders when; you kind of have to push your way up to the pick-up counter to see if your order is ready and be persistent about getting your order which is very exasperating & frustrating especially when you get closer towards the weekends.
* If you must get your fish & shrimp fry fix – go prepared and keep the above aforementioned in mind *
This place needs to bring in an efficiency expert and help the staff understand hustle. It might help the owner to pay more so that the staff feel valued because it might help them to work faster. Likely not though. And it might help to have healthier food options, but then it wouldn't taste as amazing as it does now. As far as food goes, if you could get it on time or quicker it would be great. The flavor is amazing but it is not in any diet plan you want to maintain.
UPDATE: Have tried for over a week with both Suzette and Yaya to order a catered party of food. Neither have been very responsive and I wonder if the owner knows that they are losing him/her money in this manner. We were going to spend upwards of $700 and I find myself gravely disappointed with the results. We were given excuses like: "I emailed it (7 times) and it must have gone to your spam." or "Of course I can get that invoice back to you quickly." (5 days later still don't have it.) This is really very sad because I wanted to establish a business relationship with this organization and their staff just messed it up for them.
Can here on a Monday night and I was not too impressed. The establishment doesn't have a liquor license so that is unfortunate. The service was decent and slow and the food was bland and left a lot to be desired.
I had catfish and while it was nice and juicy on the inside, the outside was in serious need of seasoning. The collard greens were ok, but I didn't realize they had pork in them before I ordered so of the taste I had before I spit them out was ok. The bright spot in this meal was the mac and cheese. It was cooked to almost perfection.
My guest had the rasta pasta and was not impressed either, while he ate it all he said it also lacked seasoning and was spicy.
I heard so much about this spot that I seriously wanted to like it. It's a local fav here in Bed Stuy.
I wanted to like this place….seriously.
My girlfriend and I ordered fish, collard greens, and yam dinner. Typical Friday dinner in any African American household. The Whitening fish fillets were seasoned lightly rather bland and not crispy. We order pick up and the fish was not hot when we arrived.
The collard greens were steaming, seasoned with smoke turkey, aromatic, well cooked, and they were mouth watering good.
The yams were like grandma's, sprinkled with brown sugar, and tender…they were sweet and the portions were huge.
I give it three stars because the veggies saved the day. The young lady who took our order over the phone was not warm and or fuzzy , she sounded extremely rushed. We had to repeat the order several times.
I wanted to like this place…seriously.
Maybe next time.
This is not a place you can sit and eat with groups because it's so small. When customers come into order they are on top of you as you sit and wait for your food. If you dine in you aren't given a plate they give you the takeout container. Which isn't bad looking. My order didn't take long to come up. I did ask for half and half and they didn't have any available. The pink lemonade taste great but I did want to try the half and half.
There's an ATM inside if you choose to use it. They don't accept debit cards at all. I didn't observe a restroom so I'd suggest taking your food to go in the future.
My food came out in 15 minutes. The salmon was grilled to perfection and my mac & cheese tasted amazing. The fries were seasoned well. I wish I had collard greens instead of fries. I always order something I shouldn't be having.
I will return and try something else. Great food and good service is all I ask for. And they gave me both. Kudos to the staff.
If u want to stand inside of a place with a bunch of angry people waiting for their food, this is the place to come. I called my order in for 12:15 pick up. It is now 12:45. This is ridiculous. The people waiting for their food look like the have been here for a while before me. They need help and probably refuse to hire to make profit. They o nm ly accept cash which also says something about the owner. Where is the money going. Get some help. The cashiers should be able to get the pick up orders but they just keep taking the money even though 20 people haven't gotten their food. They need a manager or someone competent to come fix this confusion
Catfish served hot and crispy shrimp with a taste of sweetness. I'm hooked; especially on a Friday or Saturday night when you have a serious craving for fried seafood. Have not sampled their sides and likely will NOT but you won't go wrong with their seafood. They need to bring back their fried lobster tails!
