  1. As Panera (sadly) doesn't exist in Manhattan, I've discovered Hale & Hearty to be the next best thing. I would have given four stars, but the service at this particular one is less than exceptional. And by less than exceptional, I mean, the most let's-sleep-on-the-job-and-look-at-you-like-you-are-crazy-when-you-want-to-order kind of staff I've ever seen. However…the food hits the spot.

The variety of soups is phenomenal. Senegalese chicken & peanut, Tuscan white bean and spinach, butternut squash, three lentil chili, chicken pot pie – and everything is made with fresh ingredients. mmm. The prices are great – I love the small soup and half sandwich special – great meal for $7.50?! Done.

You can also get a frequent-patron card. 10 soups and the next one is free, woot woot. And you can also sample the soups to your heart's delight before making your decision. Always a plus.

  2. I got an overpriced but yummy eight ounce serving of tomato rice soup and a slice of sourdough bread for $3.69.

    It kept me full.

    A-OK.

  3. I was out and about and decided to have a quick lunch. It is always difficult to make a decision as to which soup to get since the choices are vast. I ended up with a corn chowder with shrimp and got half a sandwich along with this [similar to Panera's you pick two option]
The staff was pleasant and the food was good. For a quick lunch-it was most satisfying. I would recommend and return.

  4. Delicious soup.  Great lunch after morning at the Metropolitan Museum. Very crowded and no open tables.  Finally procured a table and two chair for our party of three and enjoyed the soups.

  5. Uber-expensive soups and decent custom salads with LONG lines at lunch time.  If you happen to find a soup variety you like – it's a good lunch – but otherwise it's like Russian roulette with $9.00.

They are strictly a lunch place – so don't come for dinner – I ate here a few times when I lived on the UES and had nowhere better to go.  But believe me – there are BETTER places to go.

  6. There are many soups and sandwiches and salads to choose from here.  What kills me is the price.  The soup and half sandwich combo can cost you $10.  I wish you received more bang for your buck here but you have to remember you're on the UES.

  7. love the soups and salads.  always fresh and delicious

  8. Good soups, but I've had better. Good sandwiches, but I've had better. I guess in general, everything's just decidedly average? Can't complain too much at the given prices though.

Also would appreciate if they had more seating, but I suppose this is the sort of location you pop by to grab lunch during work. Again, can't complain too much, given the type of store.
