Goemon is the Sri Lakan-Japanese sister of the infamous Cocoron. A pretty low-key spot on Kenmare Street. I thought this was a very interesting mix of cuisines, Sri Lankan flavors with Japanese classics. The menu is only a few pages with a few selections and it promotes health in every way and great for Vegetarians.
Yakuzen Soup Curry with Vegetables and Chicken. This dish comes with your choice of rice: Japanese Jasmine Rice or Multigrain Brown Rice. You get to choose your level of spiciness. I went for Level 4 – Very Hot, which I thought was perfect for me and I typically can take a decent amount of spiciness. The curry comes in a thin, soupy texture with grilled vegetables and an Indian spiced chicken leg. This soup and rice combo dish overall tasted homemade and super healthy leaving me energized after I am finished. I would definitely get this again when I want something light.
For dessert, we tried the Sesame Cheesecake. My favorite part of this piece of cake was the flakey crust – like an egg tart/mooncake. It was light and the combo of sesame and cheesecake really works. It was not overly creamy but smooth.
A great spot for the health conscious!
Great japananese curry spot. The meal really feels home made. Had the curry chicken with vegetables over rice. Had great flavor and was satisfying. The presentation was spot on as well. On a tray with japanese style eating ware. Service was good and they explained items on the menu and recommended this dish as for what my tastes were like. Fast and quick. I'll be back.
This place's service is SO SLOW it's almost fascinating how that's possible, it's not like they forgot the order, but it's almost like they're growing edamame and hatching eggs in the kitchen or something.
The soup curry is pretty delicious, it comes in different serving sizes, portions are reasonable.
Natto curry is a bit strange, not sure if I'd recommend or get that again.
Japanese red pickles were good.
Also, if you were to order a warm sake, make sure you order it RIGHT AWAY as it takes an eternity for them to heat it up.
PS, if you like your spicy, go with at least 4 on the "heat level".
I got plain curry with pork and potatoes. The curry sauce was delicious, but no joke I got one piece of pork. Like an inch and a half long and nothing else. They should have just put one piece of pork and potatoes in the menu, then I wouldn't have been expecting more than a piece. I like it, but with the portion they gave me, most probably will not be back.
This is pretty good Japanese curry, but nothing amazing. Given that this is a curry place, I expected more. An instant curry made from those cubes would be almost as good, and the curry soup I didn't find to be particularly good. It had a dark, smoky sort of flavor that, while deep, was not actually so enjoyable. We had the black sesame cheesecake for dessert and it tasted only very faintly of black sesame. That plus the fact that the cake was way way too hard and dense and not soft and moist left the cake tasting only faintly of peanut butter.
Overall, no reason to come here. Make your own Japanese curry or seek it elsewhere.
A bit expensive for what you get. Curry tends to be Indian style; too salty and strong taste.
My friend and I were redirected to Goemon after attempting a very late lunch at Cocoron. Although not quite what I was craving that day, Goemon did not disappoint. I've had many different types of curry before, but the curry here was probably the most unique I've had. I also had the vegetable Yakuzen soup curry and being a fan of anything soupy and spicy, this dish was great. However, I wish they offer a noodle option instead of just rice. The soup curry is a little thin for rice while for noodle it would've been the perfect combination. This restaurant definitely deserves as much attention as their sister restaurant.
I've been a fan of Cocoron since I first went last year- now I find that the same people who gave you Cocoron's delicious soba are now trying their hand at curry.
Goemon is located RIGHT NEXT TO Cocoron- it has a similar sort of vibe (wood furniture, kinda rustic) but here break away from the soba and have curry rice and curry soup dishes. (Also check out the ridiculous mascot- a creepy/cute bunny wearing a turban!)
It's a very narrow space with a lot of counter seats, very casual and quick.
Boyfriend got the Carrot/Potato Plain curry at level 4 spiciness (you can choose the level of spice- perfect for those who can't handle the heat… aka me!) Level 4 is midlevel but it still packs a strong punch. He loved it and really liked the fact that he could choose the spicy level.
He also got an extra side of rakkyo (you can get extra toppings as well!)
I got the special taco rice- a Japanese take on an American dish thats an American take of a Mexican dish! Quite the history on this dish and its an Okinawa favorite! It is rice topped with a layer of curry/taco flavored ground meat, topped with shredded lettuce, avocado, tomato salsa and chese that had been melted with a blowtorch. The melted cheese had a great smokey sort of flavor that tied the dish together. Very good and satisfying, but I will say it was a bit too heavy on the rice. Gimme some more meat and veggies please!
We finished off with a dessert of Black Sesame Cheesecake. A little steep for $6 but well worth it- great texture and creamy! And the black sesame flavor was spot on, without being overwhelming.
I think they have a lot of potential! I'd live to try the curry soups next time.
