Sigiri

“3 of us went and ordered the Kotthu Roti, Pol Roti and Dhal (Lentil) Curry.”

“Since we had never had Sri Lankan food, we tried two of the specialities: the chicken lamprais and the string hopper kotthu.”

“Each time I go to Sigiri I over-order and over-eat, it is that good. 🙂

Also, don't forget it is BYOB.”

  1. This place hit the spot when it came to my spicy food craving. This was my first time trying Sri Lankan food and I was advised that their spice levels are extremely high, so we got everything medium spicy which was still HOT! (And I have a high tolerance to spicy food). But everything was so tasty. My favorite dish was the devilish fried fish, it tasted similar to Thai basil chili and the fish was so crispy I thought it was crispy pork in the beginning. Their other popular dishes were also very good (see pics). Service was great, very friendly and our waiter gave us good recommendations.
Cash only, BYOB and they accept payment via venmo!
Overall, can't wait to come back and try other dishes!

  2. Okay, after years of hearing about this place, we finally braved the long wait to see what the hullabaloo is all about. And, reporting back that it's much ado about nothing. The wait quotes are terribly off – they told us 20-25 minutes and finally sat us 1hr 15m later. Similarly, we asked about wait times for certain items on the menu and a "10-minute wait" was actually 35 minutes, timed.

Once the food arrived, it was nothing special, not tasty, small quantities, way too spicy, and just not worth it. We got trapped in the hype, as the place delivered no substance.

  3. Oh my god .. Yum!! This place is like a tiny gem hidden between these obnoxiously lit restaurants around it.. And it's popularity became even more clear when we were asked to wait for 20 minutes for our table on a Thursday. It's BYOB so we decided to buy a bottle of wine in the meantime. We ordered the Chicken Kotthu Roti, pork in black sauce, dal , appa (a net like roti )and a fish dish and we requested for "medium" spicy. I can handle spicy food and quite enjoy it so I could handle the spiciness hut my husband and his cousins were pretty much sweating by the end of the meal. However, they kept backing up their battle with spiciness by saying that the food is totally worth it- and i agreed. The flavors are complicated and robust and all that we ordered was just perfect. In fact we repeated an order of the appa. Seating's a bit cramped and the service was a little slow which is why I am not rating it a 5.  Will be back for sure!

  4. Although it was the BYOB which caught my attention at first…. boy, is Sigiri's food delicious. All the dishes we ordered were so flavorful. We ordered the Chicken Biriyani (a combination of saffron and herb flavored rice with chicken and vegetables), the Kotthu Roti (deemed a road-side specialty prepared from doughy pancakes shredded and stir fried with vegetables, onions egg and our choice of beef) and the black chicken curry in medium (we had asked for spicy at first but the waiter told us spicy is super spicy).

Definitely will return to try their other specialties!

  5. In preparation for a trip to Sri Lanka coming up I have been meaning to come check this place out. And if this is an indicator of what I will be getting in Sri Lanka, I am going to be one very happy individual! This is a small BYOB restaurant with no reservations and cash only. The service was amazing and the staff took a great deal of time explaining all the dishes to us and offering suggestions. The food itself was delicious, we were a large group and ordered family style and there wasn't a single item on the table that anyone had a single complaint about. I will most definitely be coming back here before my trip to Sri Lanka!

  6. Came down here to relive the culinary adventure I experienced earlier in the year in Sri Lanka. The Sunday buffet for 14.95 is great introduction to the cuisine. Though closer to South Indian (Kerala) cuisine, it can more easily be identified as being closer to Thai/Malaysian flavors.

The buffet  had a salad, 3 vegetable curries, a pork curry,, a chicken curry and a shrimp curry with red and white rice. For folks not familiar with unpolished rice, red rice here is very good and would recommend you give it a try for health and taste. They had the papadam for the crunch factor and flan for dessert.
Not many authentic Sri Lankan places in the city or elsewhere, would be tough to beat this spot. Do yourself a favor and order their hoppers (not on buffet), unique and goes great in a meal as bread substitute. Will be back to try their other specialties for dinner…

The service though friendly can be slow and its a small place and they seem really low on staff. Remember to get cash and you own booze !!

  7. Alright this place is pretty damn good. The only sucky part was that they hardly have heat…so while my whole body froze to death, my mouth was on fire (but they give you yogurt midway to cool it down). The place is small and is cash only so be cautious when making plans to visit this joint. I had the following-

    – Gothamba Roti with beef: tastes like beef patty (sauce that it comes with is sweet and spicy)
    – Kotthu Roti with beef: thought this was rice in the picture but it's really roti– this dish is awesome (I would recommend this as a sharing plate when you can't feel your mouth from the curry)
    – Pork black curry: ordered this between mild and medium and it was quite enough of the spice and I do like spicy food so if I claim it's good enough, it's good….beef was tender, curry was slamming, eat it with the rice and you are on your way
    – Aappa: the main highlight of my day– God can I get a bunch of these everyday to eat?!? It's crepe like texture shaped into a bowl and you dip it in curry which isn't as spicy as the pork black curry….I can honestly eat this all day long…crispy on the edges and chewy toward the middle

This place is awesome and it's not pricey either. I'll be back!

  8. I've never had Sri lankan food but this was pretty tasty. We weren't sure how spicy Sri Lanka food was so we opted for mild which almost all of us could handle. We got the chicken biriyani (chicken and the rice were on the dry side), koththu roti (very interesting, eggs, tasty), Sri Lanka crab curry (tasty but a bit on the salty side), and the chicken lamprais (spicier than the other dishes, also dry). We got the pork black curry with medium spice and it had a lingering burn on my tongue but was tasty and tender. For dessert, unfortunately they didn't have our first choice dessert but instead we got the kiri pani (tastes like yummy Greek yogurt with honey) and the sweet mango a la mode (super sweet mangoes!). Service was attentive. Cash only. BYOB but there's a store downstairs from the restaurant that you can purchase alcohol from. Would definitely give this place a shot if you're looking for Sri lankan food!
