So for the fact that this restaurant is like ACTUALLY Spanish I want to give it 10 stars.
1. They have tapas that they just bring you when you buy a beer!!!!!! If you have never been to Granada, Spain, then you don't know why this is such a big deal, but if you have then you understand how a restaurant that claims to have "tapas" is not really serving tapas if they don't do this. Point: THIS IS A BIG DEAL.
2. They have Estrella Galicia! Arguably the best Spanish Beer.
The rest. Well, it was alright. Definitely Spanish. The Paella, the Sangria, and the other Mariscos didn't blow me away, but hey – it's Spanish food.
Note: They really don't have anything vegetarian on their menu. Again, very Spanish – no, in the USA, fish is not vegetarian.
The cash only thing is a little rough for the actual restaurant, just cause it's not super cheap – but now you are forewarned!
If you want food, and lots of it, this place is for you. I attended a smaller birthday dinner here. upon entering i was instantly reminded of Taix in L.A. The space has a very old timely feel and as we walked to the bar that vibe continued. The bar was manned by an older gentlemen who has most likely worked here since he was a teenager.
The service was great. Our waiters were very friendly and fun, and before we even ordered dinner we were greeted with 4 appetizers and salad on the house! I was blown away. All the appetizers were delicious. We began to worry we might not even have room for ordering dinner. The menu focuses on traditional Spanish seafood dishes, and the potions were large! very generous helpings of fantastic food.
I would definitely recommend this place for a small dinner party!
This restaurant is like walking into a David Lynch movie. They have a cross-stitch nude on the wall! I mean, seriously? You walk through the dive-bar area to get to the back room where the wait staff in bright red coats serve you on white linen. Not to mention, the lobster Paella is KILLER! We had more than enough to go around, and took some home, not to mention the array of free apps they brought to the table beforehand. I wasn't a fan of the BBQ/A1 sauce on my salad, but the salty ribs were pretty tasty. The sangria was not my favorite, but it did the trick.
I don't think I've ever been to a stranger space for dinner, but if we're going on food alone, I'd come back for the paella.
I love little hole in the walls, and was so excited when my friend took me to this little restaurant. We sat in the bar and had one sangria and 2 beers. The sangria was very tasty and also, it is not one glass of sangria, it ends up being around 4 glasses since they bring you a small personal pitcher.
Apparently when you get two beers you also get 2 free tapas. We got some brava potatoes and some meatballs. They might have been free but they tasted amazing.We ate them very fast and had been talking to the owner for a while so he brought us 2 more free tapas. I think we ended up getting about 6 free tapas in total which was enough to get us full. The disappointing part was that I was too full to try their paella which I was told was amazing.
The great thing about this place is that the food was tasty, the people were nice, and it was very inexpensive. I already started spreading the voice because I think everyone should try it!
This place is small, somewhat quaint, and cozy. You step off the street into a dimly lit bar and "restaurant" with one TV playing Spanish news in one corner and typical American television in the other. It's a nice place to meet a friend or escape a cold winter night.
The bartender and waiter are abrupt and demanding. They expect you to know what you want almost immediately after walking in the door. This might be because their beer, wine, and sangria list are very small. Once you order, the service is quick. They will bring you your drink along with a plate of tapas. We received patatas bravas (thinly sliced potatoes in hot sauce), meatballs, and chicken wings in a garlic sauce. The tapas are free of charge with your drinks and will keep flowing if you keep ordering alcohol. The food is edible, nothing too exciting but fun to munch on because it's free (let's be honest, free things always amp the taste a little). The garlic sauce for those chicken wings is stellar though.
This place is cash only. Beers are $5 and sangria (served in a medium-sized ceramic pitcher, good for 3-4 glasses) is $10.
Come here to escape the streets of New York, feel a tiny bit like you are in a hole in the wall in Spain, and roll out satisfied. But be prepared to get yelled at my the staff. Which, in it's own way, is a little fun.
I was talked into returning to Spain one night when a group of girlfriends and I wanted to catch up on each other's spring breaks. As you can tell from my last review, I was extremely reluctant but I gave in easily to the lure of free appetizers and socializing. There's really no need for an update to my last review since I'm still giving this fine establishment only 2 stars again, but I feel compelled to tell of my last experience which demonstrates just how poor and wacky the service is.
I don't drink alcohol but I was in dire need of caffeine so I ordered a cappuccino. The rest of my group ordered wine and beers. The head waiter (owner or manager?) accosted me about why I wasn't ordering an alcoholic beverage. My friends and I told him I ordered a cappuccino but he walked away in a huff. After the cappuccino was brought over to me, he came back over to me and said, "But you ARE drinking something!" WHAT?! I didn't understand if he was just joking around now.
For the rest of the time we were there, he kept coming over to us to take more drink orders, even when we weren't done with the ones in our hands. And he seemed to intentionally choose the moments when were deep in conversation or talking about something serious. Normally, waiters would give you the courtesy of just going away after you tell him/her you don't need anything else, but this guy would just stand over us and would not let us return to our conversation! It was so weird…
I made a reservation for 5:30pm to celebrate my friend's actual birthday tonight. When I got to the restaurant, I saw my friend (the birthday girl) sitting in the front because our table wasn't ready.
I was personally annoyed that the waiter kept coming back to our table and pressing on us to order drinks and interrupting our conversations. As more people started to arrive, my friend ordered Fried Calamari and Shrimp Cocktail for appetizer. The waiter started bringing out the free tapas…chorizo (sausage), cold mussels with tons of raw onions piled on it, ribs with some brown sauce (that wasn't BBQ but my friends were mentioning that it tasted like oyster sauce), and fried slices of potatoes drenched in hot sauce (very original…NOT). The sangria was tasty but I missed the slice of apples floating inside my glass.
I shared a paella with chorizo, chicken and seafood with my other two friends because its a huge portion just for me by myself. Honestly I have a strong palate and the paella wasn't anything special! What sicken me was that they throw two drumsticks in our paella…one had meat and the other was just a bone! Very unappealing…
When we needed to get the waiters' attention for something, it was hard to flag one down. Like really you are that busy…I saw them just grouping in front of the bathrooms doing nothing! My dining experience was not like wow but it was my friend's birthday lets put it that way.
Remember they are a CASH ONLY restaurant which is so annoying!
Oh Spain. Where to start? This was definitely the place to go for me and my friends during college at Parsons. It's close by and the Sangria/Margarita pitchers are hard to resist with the free bar food that was periodically served. Their potatoes served with hot sauce are the best and everything else is delicious too – the garlic chicken, shrimp, meatballs… The waiters aren't the nicest and can be a bit testy at times but I think adds to the experience. It's a small place so can get crowded at peak times.
