My boyfriend had bought a groupon for lobster streak deal. We went couple days before the groupon expired and it seemed everyone there was using groupons so it was really hard to judge the ambience. But overall I really enjoyed the meal and the drinks there. I recommend the cajun steak it was subtle but different. I would be little aggressive about expressing how your steak should be prepared because mine came out little more medium then medium rare.
Well, that certainly was an experience.
I won't go into long diatribes about how hilariously awful the dinner was. All in all, I'm grateful for the experience because I got to walk away with so much laughter and surprisingly, pretty good food in my belly to keep me full on the car ride home. So I'll just present everything in bullet points because simplicity precedes all.
-Our waitress who was a nightmare
-Our nightmarish waitress who proceeded to shove the Groupon menu in my face and walked away when we were discussing what appetizers and sides to go with our meal from the original menu
-Our butter for the lobster served in a gravy boat that literally congealed because she ignored us for that long (Is this real life?)
-Her petulant attitude when we asked her how the dessert comes prepared
-Asking a busboy to take our second round of drink orders because she was never around
-When Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money" started blaring from the speakers and we just looked at each other with our mouths gaping open
-The mortified manager who ran to change the station and gave us apologetic looks while my friend screamed, "THANK GOD!" I was on the floor dying of laughter
-When he had to change the station a SECOND time because MORE inappropriate music came on. I can't
-Food was BOMB though. Bone-in filets were delish, our lobster mac and cheese and garlic mashed potatoes were on point as well as the crab cakes and tuna tartare, and our 2.5lb lobster was deeeee-vine
I don't know what her issue was. Maybe she didn't like Asians. Maybe she thought we looked too young and broke to give her sufficient tipping. Perhaps she was having an off day (which happens to all of us, the best of us). Or maybe she was just annoyed that we came on a Groupon (in that case, which is expected, it is strongly urged that judgment be withheld under those circumstances since customers tend to order much more beyond the offered limit on top of a discount, hence…MORE tip)
Whatever her qualm was, it's not mine to incur. If I had any last words about this place, it would not be a suggestion of improvement, but rather, a question of what happened? Trashy Top 40 music and unenforced dress codes? There were men walking around in neon polo shirts, men in Foot Locker t-shirts with chain necklaces, women wearing plaid button-downs.
S Prime, you used to be a revered steakhouse within the Queens vicinity that provided quality food as well as equally coveted service on par with the Manhattan establishments. But if last night's events as well as your waitress is any indication of what is now the accepted norm in terms of hospitality, then your reputation is merely a stinking, moral carcass of what simply used to be.
Oh, and judging from the receipt, her name was Adelina.
My gf talked this place up for a long time. Recently we went and used our Groupon. On a positive note, I like that they offer Groupon deals. Also, the bartender is a pro and very nice.
As for the food, the bread and sides were excellent, but the wet-aged meat tasted like something I could have prepared at home. The steak was fine, but not what I consider to be Steakhouse quality. If I'm gonna spend a lot of money on a steak, I want dry-aged meat that blows me away.
I would go back to the bar and maybe try the burger…but don't think I would order another steak here.
Happy hour is amazing here! Drinks are strong & not watered down. There's a whole wall of liquor! You can order any drink on the menu and have them switch the liquor to your preference. I ordered a newton's apple which comes with bourbon, and asked if they can make it with tequila instead. They were very accommodating.
They also have $1 oysters until 7pm here. Service is really good here and I'm always able to spark up a conversation with one of the bartenders.
All items on the bar menu is half off during happy hour. Fish tacos, charcuterie and short rib sliders are a must here! AND DON'T FORGET THE GRILLED CHEESE (THERE'S GRANNY SMITH APPLES & BACON IN IT, WHO DOESN'T LOVE BACONNN?) AND THE OYSTERS 🙂
Hubby and I visited S Prime in 2013. It was a great meal and great experience. I found an unfinished review draft saved here on Yelp where I gave it 4 stars, it started with: "We had a great time at S Prime Steakhouse. Never been to a steakhouse in Queens before and I must say….." Well, here is what I still remembered fondly of: Our waiter was a joy to interact with (he was also an actor, charming!), he was attentive and humorous. Our meal was delicious, we had the bone marrow,, dry aged ribeye (medium rare, of course), baked whole branzino. and sides of spinach and smash potatoes. The Ribeye was good, beefy, juicey (well rested), with a nice light searing exterior. The creamed spinach was delicious and not heavy, I eyes bulged every time my husband reached for the side fearing that he might not leave me any. We were comped on dessert and bubbly since we were there for a celebration. What a gesture!
Fast forward 2 years. We revisited with friends on a Groupon they purchased. It was a complete different experience. I wasn't "dressed up" since I had a long day at work and I dragged in my commuter backpack, I felt kind of judged by the staff as they looked at me up and down. Fine…. but there were gentlemen in track suits and some of them in interesting color choices! Not that I cared, but I felt like I was in a live action GTA movie set. How amusing.
Many 2015 reviews here narrate the Groupon deal, so I'll just cut to the chase. The sides have gotten smaller. The lobster was overcooked (what a sin). The star of the dinner, the porterhouse, was utterly forgettable and quite disappointing. Hubby's home cooked steak (from Trader Joe's) was better than this. We asked for medium rare, the kitchen gave us medium. The steak was not flavorful and it was bland. The type of blandness that isn't fixed with more salt and pepper. I had to dip the meat into the steak sauce for seasoning. If I had to, not because I wanted to out of whim then it is a fail for me.
J. voiced the problems with the steak to the floor manager when he stopped by to survey our meal. He decided to comp us 3 desserts + bubbly to make up for it. The desserts that the manager "chose" for us were good. Probably the most delicious part of the evening, surpassing the oyster Rockefeller appetizer we ordered.
I feel a bit troubled since I have told many people about S Prime and now I wondered what they might have experienced.
If quality of food was poor because of the Groupon, then that's quite shameful. You'll just end up tarnishing your reputation and show that you are desperate for quick bucks. If this is how they are regularly, then… What happened S Prime? *sigh*
The most attentive and pleasant staff of that evening were the busboys. By the way, what's with the 90's rock and top 40's? Amusing playlist for a steakhouse.
I had a $100 for $50 Groupon that had expired long ago, but I still wanted to use the $50 that I had paid. Not sure if S Prime is worth the trek out to Queens, especially when there are plenty of other comparable steakhouses in the Manhattan area, but I thought we had a pretty great experience.
The menu is quite typical for a steakhouse.
After ordering, they came around with complimentary pretzel breadsticks and corn chowder (in shot glasses w/ a splash of chili oil). The breadsticks were a little tooo salty for my taste, but the corn chowder was delicious. I wish we'd gotten more!! :9
We ordered one of the specials, which was a grilled octopus dish. It was a fantastic choice, and I'm glad it came highly recommended! This wasn't just some regular ol' baby octopus either, this was some grown octopus tentacles that had been sliced and grilled and served on a plate with sauteed potatoes and a bed of greens.
We also ordered the JR's Dry-Aged Cheeseburger and the Prime Sirloin Flap Steak (medium), which were both fantastic options. I was really craving a burger, so the cheeseburger – with all of its toppings – really hit the spot! The Flap Steak was delicious as well. The chimichurri was a little bland, but otherwise the meat was cooked perfectly.
All in all, it was a worthy meal! I appreciate that their menu has a really broad range of prices (from $18 burgers to $92 hanger steaks), so you can definitely find anything to fit your budget. Our total bill came out to be $80 for the two of us (including the glass of wine I ordered), which wasn't bad considering how much food we got!
In case you were interested in HH, just note that it's only applicable at the bar. If you are seated at a table, you won't be able to order from the HH menu. BOOOO!!
S Prime seems out of place in the neighborhood. The space is beautiful, modern steakhouse decor, high ceilings, posh bar area, and a gorgeous back wall displaying a large wine collection.
The music tonight was the Rock of Ages soundtrack. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the wines when I asked for a recommendation. I enjoyed the full bodied Malbec from Argentina. Water glasses were quickly topped off.
After we placed our order we were treated with amuse-bouche of lobster bisque and pretzel bread with butter (I think it was mustard and anchovy). Foie gras appetizer with apple was on the sweet side but the foie gras itself was seared perfectly and delicious. For steaks we opted for individual cuts rather than the porterhouse. The temperature of the meat was pretty close to medium rare that we asked for. We had the Cajun rib eye and the aged NY strip. The NY strip didn't taste like it was dry aged – the steaks was just okay. Both of them could use more salt and pepper seasoning. They served a smokey homemade steak sauce with my entree that didn't add much to the taste. The lobster was served table side with drawn butter. It was the highlight of the evening. It was simple and natural, the best way to have lobster. For the sides we ordered lap cheung fried rice and hash browns. They were both pretty good and I would order them again. The hash brown was fried a little burnt (to my liking) and this was the first time we saw lap cheung fried rice on a non-Asian restaurant and it was flavorful and tasty.
Even with a Groupon, our meal with additional 2 rounds of drinks and 2 sides + tips on the full value the total cost was still quite high. We had leftovers enough for another meal but overall I didn't feel that it was good value for the money. This is not the best steakhouse in Astoria.
This is a good place for business meetings, work outings and fancy family gatherings if you want to avoid traveling to Manhattan.
Pretty solid happy hour spot with half off drinks at the bar only. Their prickly pear margarita packs a punch! pretty strong cocktail if you ask me. They have dollar oysters during happy hour! i believe their happy hour is from 5-8 pm. Their fish tacos also on the happy hour menu is pretty good. I haven't had dinner there yet, but will definitely make some time to dine here for dinner.
