Wow, lots of Yelp hate for Dolphin. For some reason, even though the reviews are less than stellar, I wanted to try this restaurant for a long time, in my opinion it always looked very pretty.
Hudson Valley Restaurant Week was the perfect opportunity to give them a try, with a prix-fixe dinner at $29.95. The hostess asked us if we had a reservation, which we didn't, but we hardly had to wait 3 minutes for a seat.
The decor is pretty nice. It's trendy, with colorful lights and a glowing sink in the bathroom. No complaints about service, in fact the wait staff is pretty attractive and friendly.
The food was quite good, at least I thought so. The clam chowder had lots of hearty clam chunks and celery, while the linguine with clams, mussels and shrimp changed my opinion of shellfish (I usually don't like shellfish).
For dessert, I tried the cheesecake with local apple compote… it was amazing!
Overall, I would say that Dolphin is an excellent date place. It's trendy without being pretentious, kind of romantic, and who doesn't love eating by the Hudson?
My boyfriend and I are considering some properties in the Yonkers area. We decided to go to dinner at a Yonker restaurant for Restaurant week where we could then take a drive through the neighborhood.
We received a phone call about 15 minutes before our reservation time confirming that we were coming. We initially thought it was because they were so busy and/or attentive customer service. Upon entering we were seated right away which is always a plus. We sat to the right along the wall of doors. There were only two other parties in the restaurant, seated to the left of the entrance on a raised seating area. It looked a little tight to add another party.
We thought it was odd that they were not busy considering the restaurant next store had some may patrons coming in and out. We quickly found out why.
We glanced at their menu and it seemed like a decent offering of options. There were fish and veggy options so I was happy to see that. However, when our waitress came over, she went over the number of items that they were out of. It was disappointing because the only one vegetarian entree, they had ran out of. My waitress offered me two appetizers instead but I didn't want to get jipped on the portion size so I just ordered the fish entree.
For appetizers, we started with Aracini (rice ball) and the meatballs. Both were decent but nothing spectacular. For the entree, I ordered the fish over a creamy polenta. The fish was decently fried but rather tastless. There was a runny tartar type sauce drizzled over it that I wasn't fond of. I ended up not eating much of my entree. My boyfriend ordered the skirt steak with mashed potatoes. His potatoes were yummy (i had some when I stopped eating my polenta). He said the steak was okay but I could tell he was not impressed. For dessert, we ordered bread pudding and an apple pie something. A few bites in and we were both done.
Overall the food was disappointing and so was the experience. Nothing was spectacular or made you want to stay. We were in and out within in 45 minutes. Which i think is quick for a three course meal which only made me think that everything was pre done and nuked up when we came in.
I was not impressed and honestly do not think we will ever return. I will say that the staff was pleasant and attentive. The cook even came out to wave.
What a disappointment! I came here to eat after running a half marathon which was held in Yonkers. Dolphin restaurant was right at the finish line so I thought this would be a good place to eat, relax, and enjoy post race afterglow. However, we were really disappointed. The service was terrible. Our waiter seemed to lack energy and not a trace of enthusiasm on his face. I think he was working partly as a bartender too.
Here is my beef with the place. The kitchen apparently ran out of many things on their brunch menu, but the waiter failed to tell us that until after our dishes came out. All 3 of our dishes were missing homefries and replaced with french fries, which none of us requested since we weren't told about it. When we brought it up he meekly said "oh we are out homefries". No offer to replace it with bread or anything else.
How do you run out of food/ingredients on a brunch service on a Sunday?
I also was served hot coffee in a broken coffee cup with many cracks in it. No apology from the waiter, no offer to change the cup…NOTHING. His response "Oh".
Who runs a restaurant like this?
I would have given them 1 star, but the 2 stars is because the actual crab omelette I ate was really good. That's it. They need to get their service in order.
Don't bother coming to this place. I'm not from this area, but I'm sure there are better spots in Yonkers.
Half off wine night on Wednesday nights is a great deal… I enjoyed two bottles of wine with five coworkers and it came out to about $10 a person, what a steal! The food was decent I really liked the crab stuffed shrimp, however instead of the saffron rice I got next vegetables which were a really nice and healthy alternative to the saffron rice. Overall it was a nice experience they were accommodating to my group, the service was nice, and the atmosphere was fine I would definitely go back here. It's a pretty decent location in downtown Yonkers, right on the river. The food wasn't spectacular which is why am reading it three stars however it was a overall nice experience
I really wanted this restaurant to be good, and there is very little positive I can say about this place except for it's location. The only reason it's getting two stars (and not one) is because it is a really lovely spot and the manager at least had the decency to comp our meal which took over an hour to get to us and was cold when it arrived.
This is a beautiful restaurant right on the water in Yonkers. It's a great little area that has seen some life breathed into it and I really enjoy coming down this way. My husband and I had wanted to try a nice seafood restaurant and we thought we would give this place a try. Well, we should have listened to the other yelp reviewers and steered clear of this place. We order the tuna tartare, walnut salad, and then the crab stuffed shrimp to split.
Our waiter was nice enough and came to get our drink and food order pretty quickly. The Riesling that I had was quite delicious and it seemed like the evening was getting off to a good start. Then the tartare came out and it was pretty tasteless. The fish also didn't really taste fresh. However, we still ate the whole thing and my overall impression was that it was about average. Then, our waiter disappeared. We didn't see him (to even get a water refill) for at least 30 minutes. Come to find out there was a large party inside and they were holding everything up but without the beautiful weather (we were sitting on the porch) it would have been pretty unbearable.
By the time our salad and food came out (over an hour after we ordered), we were fairly frustrated. The salad was basic but it's pretty hard to mess up salad. The shrimp was awful. There really isn't another word for it. It was incredibly bland and not even salt could have made it better (which was already sprinkled on very liberally). The "vegetable medley" that it came with was just steamed vegetables that were also incredibly bland. To top it all off, the food was cold. It had clearly been sitting for a while as the waiter was dealing with that larger party.
Anyway, we tried to eat it out of good faith (and sheer hunger) but we just couldn't stomach it. We sent it back and asked for it to be taken off of our bill. It was unacceptable to be kept waiting for over an hour for bland, cold food. Anyway, the waiter came back and said that the manager ok-ed for this time, but it was not acceptable that we had eaten so much of it. Next time we would need to pay for it and simply get a replacement meal.
I would like to point out there were three pieces of shrimp on that plate and both my husband and I hate wasting food. We were pretty hungry by this point and so were trying to make the best of a bad situation. By eating "so much" we were trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt and maybe the food would get better with time. We were wrong and were so frustrated with the time it took to get this lousy service so there was no way we were waiting another hour for more bland food.
Anyway, safe to say if you want a place to get a good drink and sit on the water this is a great place. If you want decent food or decent service, you should go somewhere else.
So I did not know the concept of bottomless brunch was so hard to comprehend.
Me & 6 of my friends came to eat here this past Sunday (9/20). Our waiter was Michael. We had reservations at 12:30pm for brunch. We were seated quickly & our orders were taken. We asked the waiter if he could separate our checks & he assured us that we would only need to remind him at the end. One of the problems I had is the attentiveness of the waiter (mind you there were only two other tables aside from us to start). He would disappear far two often for an extended period of time. An order of bottomless drinks and I think I may of drank 2 drinks in an hour & 20mins. The purpose of bottomless brunch is that your drink is refilled at a timely fashion (cause that's the point of me paying $18 for unlimited as opposed to $8 a drink). It got to the point where I had to walk around the entire restaurant to try & find the waiter. The busboy got our drinks instead.
Then the check came (after we reminded him again about the separate checks) & it was one single check. As we tried to find him in order to correct the error we see Michael in normal clothes leaving the restaurant to which we were told by a bartender that he had to "catch a bus". That was really unprofessional. The bartender (blonde male I believe) handled our payments. He certainly did not deserve the gratuity. I would come back for the food & the view but take brunch off the menu if you cant do it right. I'll head into NYC next time for a proper brunch.
We've had many lunches and on those oft times, we also do well by just having drinks on that occasional weekday afternoon here at this nicely decorated, modern restaurant called the Dolphin.
The bartenders, servers, waiters and waitresses have all provided friendly and attentive service during our visits. The meals, be it just an appetizer or a full entree, have been solid; nothing outstanding to complain about and nothing outstanding to boast about. Drinks are easy as we are wine lovers, and their list of wines have been fairly on par with most.
Parking, though metered, is easy to obtain during a weekday afternoon as the spots are vertical and directly in front of the restaurant. The meter could literally be less than ten feet away from where you are seated, providing the easy access of the necessary meter feeding without the worry of a parking ticket. For those peak dinner hours, where parking might be hard to find, valet parking is also available.
The Dolphin is in a prime location a little past downtown Yonkers and their location proves to be a major plus point for me, being near a decent sized pier situated directly on the Hudson River. Before or after having your meal, on a clear day, while looking south, you can possibly catch a glimpse of the George Washington Bridge several miles away. Or, watch the river and the cliff sides of New Jersey or better yet, just sit and enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings and reflect on life.
If considering visiting the Dolphin, anytime would be a great time to visit, but during the Spring/Summer/Fall months these are definitely better in order to take advantage of the restaurant as well as the beautiful views of the Hudson.
Such a pretty restaurant! Dolphin Restaurant is located at the Yonkers Waterfront and on a sunny day (which happened to be the day I was there) it has a gorgeous view. It was a little too windy to sit outside and really enjoy the atmosphere but they had the windows open so it was nice to have a little breeze and look at the water while dining.
A friend and I went there for lunch – the restaurant was not crowded (I didn't expect it to be) so we were able to enjoy a leisurely lunch. We both order the lobster ravioli which was delicious. The dish consisted of about four lobster raviolis with shrimps and scallops in a creamy sauce. It was absolutely delicious – only the portion size was a little small or maybe because it was so good I wanted more – you be the judge! I didn't order an appetizer so that I could get dessert – Peach and Crème Brulee!! OMG it was soooooo good! I will definitely be ordering that again on my next visit.
I would fully suggest going to Dolphin, especially in the Spring, Summer, Fall months to take in a breathtaking view and enjoy a really good meal.
