I was so excited to find out that Temple Snacks, which used to be located in the food court at Flushing Mall before the mall was closed, has now relocated here. I trekked all the way here from Jersey City and left fairly satisfied, but it wasn't as good as the original. The restaurant was very empty when I went and remained empty when I left.
The menu is smaller and they're missing some items such as bawan, but they now have a drinks and dessert menu. The place is also cash only.
Bamboo shoots and stewed pork with rice (招牌飯) – The pork belly just as tasty as I remembered. They give you a more meaty piece as opposed to fatty which I appreciate. The rice is covered in copious amounts of the sauce, which is my favorite way to eat rice. Drenched in lots of tasty sauce. The dish also comes with pickled bamboo shoots and bok choy. The bamboo shoots was one of my favorite parts. Couldn't get enough of them.
5 Delicate Appetizer (五拼小吃) – This consists of pork stomach, intestines, seaweed, five spice beancurd, and stewed eggs. The flavor of the intestines was strong in a delicious way. Second favorite was the seaweed. I could have done without the rest of the items on the plate. Just give me a big plate of intestines and seaweed!
Intestine Sticky rice with sausage ( 大腸包小腸) – I remember loving this at the old Temple Snacks. The sauce is was just as garlicy as the original. You can probably have a nice private bubble on the subway after eating this. I felt the peanuts in the rice sausage was too hard. In the previous location, the dish was swimming in the garlicy sauce, sweet chili sauce, and came with cilantro. This had no cilantro and the sauce was in a small dish. Definitely preferred the original way they made it before.
Taiwanese Burrito (潤餅) – I was so excited to try the Taiwanese lumpia here, but this dish turned out to be a huge disappointment. It was missing a lot of the delicious ingredients you find in Taiwanese lumpia such as pork, egg, and tofu. It literally just had lettuce, carrots, and sugared peanut powder. I can't believe I paid $7.50 for this. In Tainan, a huge delicious lumpia is only 40 NT which equates to $1.25.
I also ordered the the Sausage, Egg, and Bamboo Shoots w/ rice (三寶飯). It was not as advertised. Instead it came with a tiny bit of sausage, chicken roll, braised minced pork, and bok choy. I thought the chicken roll was an upgrade from the egg, but my boyfriend was disappointed. He really wanted the bamboo shoots and egg. The takeout was tasty, but they should give what is advertised on the menu.
They have a list of specials written in Chinese on the wall such as sacha beef and chinese water spinach, mapo tofu, pork and bamboo shoots, pork and chives, pork and pepper, salt and pepper shrimp.
This new Temple Snacks is definitely not on the same level as the old one that was in the Flushing Mall, except for maybe the stewed pork belly. I read in a review that the original owner is no longer part of the restaurant and has in fact been scammed by his partner. Unfortunately, my friend found out from a different source that this may be true. I'm not really sure what to believe.
im taiwanese and i love to eat taiwanese food but i was somewaht disappointed from what i ordered from them.
first off, the prices are really high for such small portions. popcorn chicken was bland, not flavorful on the menu, it said " taro ball dessert" but yet it was full of herbal jelly with like 5 pieces of taro ball…. $5… herbal jelly costs like $2 for a LARGE can at the supermarket… chciken roll – taht was the onlt thing that was good cause the garlic suace is very flavorful smoked duck- REALLY REALLY dry.
