After a nice morning of birding Sandy Hook, my Dad and I needed some nourishment. Lots of choices in the area. On The Deck sounded good to me.
As others have mentioned, it's a great location right on the water. Great deck with a view of the fishing boats coming and going. Unfortunately, the place was just starting to fill up when we arrived which affected the service. We were seated by a sullen hostess and waited on by a nice yet harried server. But we put the service flaws in the back of our minds and enjoyed the fine views.
Good food. Lobster salad sandwich for Dad. Plenty of lobster not drowned in dressing or unnecessary filler. Crab cake sandwich for me. Plenty of sweet lump crab meat and very little filler. The Lobster came with delicious thick homemade potato chips. My sandwich came with good crispy fries. Cocktail sauce in place of tartare sauce was unfortunately, watery and without bite.
So, a solid three stars for the food with an extra star for the great view. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.
Great place to come for lunch or dinner after a day on the water. (If only I had a boat to do this)
Came to the area for Sharkfest, which was actually cancelled and stumbled upon this restaurant.
You have the option to eat inside or outside, but who wouldn't sit outside with great views and fresh air?
The menu was great and pretty reasonably priced for seafood options. I had the Mahi tacos which were great!
Location, Location, Location! This is the perfect place to grab a bite or have a drink after work while you look out across the Atlantic towards NYC. I'm sure it's even better in the summer when you can sit outside. I went to On the Deck for my mom's birthday, she had just moved to the area and wanted to go somewhere local, so this is where we went. It was a Saturday night, so very crowded, but we were seated very quickly and the waitress was very nice and attentive. We all ended up getting a burger, which was pretty good (can't really go wrong with a burger). The best part about our time there (other than the view), was the live band. It made it a little hard to hear, but it made it really fun for everyone there, whether they were listening or dancing. Would absolutely go back, if for nothing else a drink and that view!
Came here yesterday to enjoy some drinks on the water which then turned into my dad joining us for dinner. The bar was packed but we were able to grab a few stools. When we decided we were going to have dinner, the hostess told me it would be 30 minutes but it ended up being way less than that.
We had the chicken fingers and calamari for appetizers which were very crispy and delicious! I had the crab cake sandwich which I thought was awesome. It definitely started to get more crowded as the night went on. With the great view and good food, it's a nice little spot..I just wish people weren't allowed to smoke "on the deck"!
Wouldn't it be cool if this place relied on something other than location to be successful? That's what runs through my mind every time I come here. Awesome spot and the staff is fairly pleasant, but the food and drinks are, in my opinion, sub-par. There's nothing on the menu that I find to be memorable. Their beer list is incredibly lacking and features no local breweries which I find disappointing. The tables inside are grossly sticky to the point where it seems like they a) haven't wiped them down in months or b) wiped them down with a bucket of sugar water. It's a nice spot to meet up with friends in the area, but again, only because of location.
This is a really nice place to eat outside with friends. It's right on the water and if you sit outside the deck over looks the marina which is sooo pretty.
Their food is really good too. They have a lot of seafood. We had clams and shrimp in a creamy sauce ( I think it was called drunken clams but I'm not sure). It was delicious! The waiter also suggested getting extra garlic bread because it comes with tons of sauce! I suggest getting this if you go it was amazing. We shared a crab cake and a soft shell crab sandwhich and everything was delicious. We also got two pitchers of sangria! Which were half off after one on Saturday!
The staff was also really friendly and welcoming. The bar tender was joking and laughing with us the whole time. It was really a great experience. Iwould recommend spending an afternoon here it was a lot of fun and a beautiful location.
Not worth it. We stopped by for some drinks when we were in the area and were quickly disappointed that we had. It was the first warm day for the time of year and the crowd definitely reflected it. We only had some drinks so I can't comment on the food, but even that was enough to turn us off from coming back. It's an upstairs bar, outside overlooking the marina where the Sea Streak Ferry takes off from with a view of not too much honestly. You can see some boats off one way, but that's about it. The bar was packed (and unfortunately you're still allowed to smoke there) and there was only 1 bartender on duty, who clearly looked over-worked. The beers were fairly priced but getting one became very difficult. Not to mention you had a very limited, low-end selection. It's a small, tight area that got over-crowded very fast. Not a place you'd want to come to hang out at, especially since it's off the beaten path.
Recommendations from friends come in all shapes and sizes, but this one came with the promise of nice ocean views. We weren't sure about the other factors (wait times on a Saturday, food, etc), but this is one recommendation that we're definitely happy we followed up on.
We looked it the restaurant up on Yelp, and motored over after a day at Sandy Hook with the promise of checking it out and a backup plan should it be too crazy and crowded. Parking was easy, and while the place was packed we were added to the "first available" list with a wait of 30 minutes. Unsure if we'd end up inside or outside we checked out the outside bar, and after ordering a drink were lucky enough to get two seats at the bar. With a nice view and friendly neighbors, we decided to stay and canceled the wait list reservation.
First off, let me be a debby downer. I don't like seafood. None at all. Sorry folks, but that means more shrimp and lobster for the rest of you (hooray!!) While a bacon cheeseburger may not be all that exciting to you, it was quite delicious and I would opt to get it again. The beer selection was really decent as well, and the staff were super friendly.
If you don't have friends like mine, take me up on my suggestion and definately check this place out.
