On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina
“We closed our dinner with 2 mouth watering desserts – Brownie Sundae and Kahlua Ice Cream Pie (recommended by Adi, my server).”
“Throughout all of grad school, when I was stressed, I would go to OTB for a Taco Melt, hard shell, beef, refried beans, extra sour cream (W. Springfield, MA).”
“There are plenty of food options, no one has ever been disappointed…the fried fish tacos are standouts as is the queso dipping sauce.”

So I came here for the second time on 2/5/2015. Our waiter was outstanding. (I think he usually works behind the bar but it was happy hour so he was waiting tables as well) …. Very very friendly server, attentive, and all that good stuff. We got frozen margaritas and they were good….. Everything went well.I got the fish tacos… they were OK nothing to rave about Boyfriend got southwest tacos. He enjoyed them. I'm giving this place one star BC I WOKE UP AT 1am VOMITING MY BRAINS OUT. It was definitely that funky smelling fish that made me sick. My boyfriend didn't try it and he felt fine. Ugh. The drinks are great but DONT EAT THE FISH HERE. I REPEAT DONT EAT THE FISH.
Yesssssss, so good. Queso to start with warm chips, A+. Then I got the pick three combo for 10 bucks. I went with the beef empanadas, chicken enchilada and a crispy beef taco with refried beans and rice. That's a huge meal for only $10 and its damn good too. I've been to plenty of finer Mexican restaurants and I'm not ashamed to say that I prefer On the Board over all of them! Quality food and the service was also on point. I will be back.
Came for HH to watch the 2015 draft. Awesome HH. Sucks that you can only order one drink at a time though. We got a pitcher of margarita and wanted to order one more drink since HH would be over soon. Oh well- we enjoyed the food and the chips and salsa were filled timely for us. We tried the empanadas, guacamole, nachos and soft tacos. All delicious!!!
Came here for dinner and drinks before a movie with my fiancee. I have to say..we really enjoyed the place. Nice bar / patio to eat and drink. Food was definitely fairly priced and portions are huge. Margaritas could have been a little stronger but with happy prices you cant complain! We will be back
I love this place. They're drink specials during happy hour. Order the frozen margaritas because they last longer ! Haha. But they food is good. Everyone is saying it's salty but I think not. I ordered the lunch quesadillas and Chicken empanadas for appetizer. The empanadas were good. Breaking was flaky and the cheese was delicious. Only bad thing about them is that they barely have chicken in them. The quesadilla was super good !! Service was eh, he kept disappearing.
I came here with a friend for lunch recently. Their menu is pretty extensive for typical Mexican meals, but their lunch menu is priced especially reasonably. Fresh, hot tortilla chips and salsa are complimentary and we eat were given our own mild salsa bowl. We each ordered a Coronita which was fairly large and strong, and we had the option to make it frozen or not. She ordered a taco salad and I ordered steak quesadillas which came with the usual guacamole, onion, salsa, and sour cream fillings on the side. I was also given the option to have tortilla soup or their house salad with it. I chose the house salad, but I'm sure the soup would've been good as well. Our bill with everything came to $33 which is quite reasonable considering we each ordered a drink.
Happy hour here starts at 3 PM, and I know they have other drink specials during the week. It is conveniently located on Route 17 with easy access to the Garden State Plaza. I would eat here again, and am interested in checking out their drink specials for a night out with friends.
There's no shortage of Mexican restaurants in Northern NJ. Oh wait a minute, there is. Unlike most other ethnic cuisines like Italian, Chinese, etc there aren't all that many Mexican joints to choose from. Of those, you can select from the authentic independents like El Bandito (my fav) or Hacienda (also excellent) or the chains. On The Border is, of course, the latter. And honestly, there's nothing really wrong with it. Food is good and well-priced. Service is attentive even though flow from the kitchen to table is a bit convoluted. It's a good place to go for a nice meal and some good drinks but it's not, shall we say, spectacular. And what chain really is? I probably eat there a couple of times a year and always enjoy it. If there was a Jose Tejas near by (and yeah there was like 20 years ago before it burned down), their business would take a severe hit. Lucky for them, it's a 1/2 drive away. Same formula, better service and food, lower prices. OTB, could really take a page out of their play book. Solid 3 Star choice.
Will not be returning. Food was less than mediocre and came out cold. My husband and I ordered fajitas and after forgetting to bring the tortillas, they only brought a total of 3 for both of us. Server was nice and addressed our issues, but he couldn't make up for the poor food quality. After the meal, we were offered a free queso for our next visit.
