Bedford. The much hyped and talked about Bedford. I see why it's much talked about and hyped.
Tables are a bit too close for comfort, ambiance is fresh and inviting and the music, albeit the selections very good, was too loud! It's supposed to be background music in a restaurant not a wannabe concert venue but I digress.
13 dishes total…not bad for 2 chicks watching their figures 😉 Told our server to do a rolling service with the food and roll they did.
Deviled eggs: the filling was way too salty but we liked the bits of chicken crackling.
Veal belly: A must order! The poached egg, light tomato caper sauce, with the luscious veal belly meat made for a harmonious bite.
Pickled veggies:very very tangy and salty and oh so good
Tuna poke: surprisingly not at all fishy tasting and the pickled 'cukes added a brightness to the dish. Lightly dressed so you knew it was fish you were eating.
Roasted Brussel sprouts: a nice mellow mix of sweet, savory and a little tang to them too with a nice char.
Short ribs: OMG so so velvety amazingly soft and well seasoned. This was a near damn perfect executing of what braising a hunk of moo is supposed to be!
Hanger Steak: Perfectly cooked rare however the dish came out completely COLD. Made eye contact with the manager and gushed about the food and said my tiny complaint was that the hanger came out ice cold and he just went "uhuh". Uh really dude? But again I digress
Roasted corn with bone marrow: I know you you can't really mess up corn on the cob but you can always make it BETTER! no taste of marrow but oh so sweet and nicely charred
Mushroom flatbread: Again their tomato sauce is to die for. Mushrooms were plentiful and couldn't get over how lite the dough was.
4 options for dessert so we did what any sane person would do and ordered one of each of course!
The chocolate cake was muddy and gritty and forgettable.
The trio of sorbets: raspberry, coconut and mango, though not made in house was delicious.
The olive oil cake, my personal favorite, moist, spongey and sweet enough.
The coconut creme Brulee was nicely done, a tiny hint of coconut in each bite but so smooth in texture and again just sweet enough.
Overall a fantastic night!
So here are my thoughts about Bedford in the kosher industry. I think the idea is great. They are not marketing themselves as a steakhouse yet are still classy and have a fine dining atmosphere.
I definitely enjoyed the vibe and rustic feel the restaurant has. It's not your typical NYC Kosher establishment but all that could be great, problem is, if your food is sub par and mediocre at best then it really isn't worth the trip out to Queens.
We ordered most of the menu, I have posted pictures below. And literally of everything we ordered, the steak is the only thing I can say WOW! That was good.
The pretzel was quite tasty too and the sliders were alright but everything else was pretty much bland and lacked flavor and that kaboom.
Desserts really really need working on. That food tasted like it was taken off shop rites shelves and served on a nice plate. Really.
It definitely is a much over hyped restaurant that gets talked about highly but brace yourself. You're not going to leave with that wow factor.
The ambiance was good for New York and great for Queens The food presentation was excellent Now on to the food "Tuna Poke" Spot on winner and it was properly marinated Funny name for a great dish "Short Rib" Good "Veal and Chicken Meatballs" Good "Charred Corn and Marrow" Tasty They need to provide utensils to eat it with, since it is served on the cob "Beer" Excellent choices "Flat Bread #2 Flat out winner Deserts Tried the Olive Oil Cake and the Flowerless Chocolate They were light which was nice As far as taste they were better than average The overall impression is that this restaurant will become a strong contender for the number one Kosher place to go to in Queens.
