Petrossian

“Caviar melts in your mouth, smoked salmon was out of this world, and the meal was delicious ( I had steak, my friend had fish).”

“I had the poached turbot, the husband had the west coast sturgeon, and both were sublime, although I would say the west coast sturgeon was the best.”

“However, the Seared Long Island Duck Breast was also cooked beautifully, and is still offered on the restaurant week menu.”

  1. Now I know why I don't like Petrossian. We went last night and it's nothing notable for the price except for the caviar which I can buy a little container from my favorite fishmonger.

My fish was over salted  – as my friends' fish was as well.  When I start paying that price, I expect a dish with a bit more professional labor that I know would be a technique I would have to learn.  Or a dessert that is more nouvelle.

I think they should overhaul their cooking presentations and dishes.

  2. Had reservation for celebrating my Dad's Birthday before attending Carnegie Hall concert. The food is so refined and perfect.Caviar selection was exceptional. The staff is attentive and the atmosphere is upscale and clean. My parents truly enjoyed the beautiful evening thank you for making it special for all of us.

  3. I came here for my birthday dinner on Saturday. The place is beautiful- the building has gorgeous architecture and the inside has an art deco decor filled with many statues near the window sills. This restaurant symbolizes classiness to me. We did the pre-fix restaurant week menu. For appetizer I had the lox which is maybe the best lox I've ever had. The portion was huge! For entree I had the sturgeon and although it was 8 extra bucks, I thought it was worth every penny. I usually have smoked sturgeon and never have had it cooked this way so this was a unique treat. For dessert, I had the chocolate caramel tart which may be the best dessert I have ever had. It was definitely decadent but worth all the calories. They wrote happy birthday leslie on my plate and the chocolate writing had a chocolate coffee taste that was also delicious! I was definitely cleaning my plate. I definitely recommend this place for a special occasion.

  4. Lovely little spot near Central Park. Very charming. Reminds me of the countless little cafe's and restaurants I visited when I lived in Europe. It's a small space but they are jam packed with all sorts of delicacies, in particular caviar and foie gras. They also have a brilliant selection of pastries and cookies for a very fair price considering the quality and location.

Since we moved out of the city, we don't really have all that many opportunities to stop by Petrossian's, but I will definitely make it a point to come back whenever I'm in the area.

  5. Petrossian is an excellent restaurant, particularly for things like caviar and fish, but the service is dreadful. The atmosphere is old world Russian cafe and a bit gaudy but nice. The wait staff was friendly and helpful, but the hostess set a terrible tone during her seating of our party and throwing menus at us with a grunt. The tuna and steak tartars were phenomenal, definitely the best I've had. The caviar was just ok, a bit over brined and covered by dill for my taste. The smoked salmon was also very good though I really couldn't detect much difference from the normal bagel lox. Interestingly, the espresso was also amazing. Good place to hit before a night at Carnegie hall, but don't expect much in the way of service.

  6. There is surely a first time for everything, as this was my dining experience at Petrossian. An interesting mix of French and Russian cuisine, I was excited to see what this meal would be like. Given that our group's meal was slightly rushed because we needed to meet a time constraint for our show at Carnegie Hall (which is just next door) it was still an enjoyable evening. The insert in the menu also gives you a little history on the restaurant and how it is sort of a Fresh/ Russian "fusion" and how it the restaurant made it's way to NYC, which I found to be a very interesting read!

Just a block or so away from Central Park, this is a beautiful and upscale area. Remember this as you are ordering so you know what to expect. Going inside, it is adorned lavishly and has interesting art work in showcases. As I got escorted to my seat, the rest of my party was already there. I wasn't sure what to expect because I've never been here before. From the exterior, things looked pretty good.

If you come hungry, they offer a prix-fixe meal. I don't eat a lot so a la carte is fine for me. I did order a lovely foie gras which I reluctantly shared with my table. For my main entree I had the Lobster Risotto (which I highly recommend) and it was delicious, I am very happy with my choice. For sure, the caviar here is a staple here and also a must try. Although I enjoyed it, I still preferred what I ordered… but you just don't go to a Russian Caviar restaurant and not try the best! Overall, service was decent and the food was also delicious. I am glad that I was able to try this restaurant before a special performance at Carnegie Hall.

  7. My wife, son and I had a fantastic Easter Sunday brunch here. I think $34 for a prix fixe lunch with an ample assortment of options, especially on Easter Sunday, is a tremendous value. Add $14 for my son's caviar option. When at Petrossian…

Every dish was perfectly executed: sumptuous duck risotto; silky smooth smoked salmon on the Petrossian Eggs Benedict; a Cobb Salad filled with all the usual goodies; exquisite, salty caviar and fluffy blinis; a perfumed blueberry crumb cake; a mouth cleansing trio of mango, blackberry and lemon sorbet. Even the fresh-squeezed OJ and rich, dark coffee were just great.

The only weird thing is that our waitress – who was elegant, attentive and so very pleasant – left for a break 2/3 of the way through our meals. Her replacement was fine, but I like continuity of service.

Drinks were a little expensive, e.g., $17 for a Kir Royale. But hey, it was a holiday meal in a fabled restaurant where the staff make you feel like a VIP. Petrossian was an excellent dining experience I look forward to enjoying again.

  8. One would think, caviar, foie gras, $8.00, $12.00 supplements in prix-fixe means this place has to be a solid four stars, right? WRONGGGGGG!

The service was awkward, things were missing from foie order….at least the smoked salmon with toast points and blueberry/coconut dessert were good.

Then again we were here for Restaurant week, and nothing is ever great during Restaurant week.
