The Archer
“The food I got–venison cheesesteak, duck poutine, rabbit terrine, elk meatball sliders–all were amazing.”
“The brussels sprouts were roasted and sweet nothing too crazy to boast or complain about, and the Elk Meatball Sliders fell in the same boat.”
“We don't eat exotic meat but loved the manchego cheese with bread, a delicious spicy honey and jam.”

Came here for drinks on a Saturday night. We were able to snag seats at the bar within a few minutes and the bartenders were friendly and attentive. The drinks were great as well. The place is small but didn't feel cramped. Will be back!
A fun tapas bar with great bites and drinks!
Since I didn't catch my flight in EWR, I decided to explore jersey city neighborhood for a good Friday dinner in return. The Archer stands out as my friend recommended this place to me earlier. Walked in around 8pm and there was no waiting/reservation needed. The ambiance is rustic and dark – wooden floors and wooden tables, elk heads exhibited on the walls, and only dimmed candles lighted (good music in the background). How could I miss a place like this?! It's a really nice intimate ambiance for some good bites and soul-filling drinks. I got the 40 winks, it is a little sour, little fruity (strawberry and lime) and also spicy and smoky – a perfect drink for Friday night. We also got a few apps – Devils duck egg, roasted asparagus, elk sliders, and mushroom. Everything was decent. The elk slider is a must-try! The meat ball is wild and bold I would say. Rich in flavors, very juicy fatty but not as fat as beef. The peppers def gives it a nice spicy kick. Lastly a hint of cheese (according to my friend =) ).
What a lovely Friday night =) Thanks Archery, I had a lot of fun!
A trendy speakeasy tapas joint with unique cocktails to sip on, while enjoying the trendy yet romantic vibe emanating from the dimly lit bar and candlelit booths.
Service was par- our waitress was helpful in explaining what type of cocktails would suit our individual fancies. I was pleased with her effort despite my not being blown away or remotely impressed by the mixology. The presentation was beautiful, so I'll suck it up.
The menu came as a shock to me and I should've looked it up first before heading over. I'm not into specialty or exotic meats, so seeing bison, rabbit, and what have you, was enough for me to lose my appetite since I can't stomach that stuff. But hey, I won't take away a star for that- it's a solid 4 star bar that's perfect for pre date night dinner drinks. An awesome way to start the night right, that is!
We decided to get dinner elsewhere but decided to share an appetizer and ordered the fried pimento cheese, which was excellently cooked. The fried cheese laid on a bed of lightly seasoned arugula and sun-dried tomatoes, perfectly garnished by strips of peppers on top.
We fell in love with the beautiful grove street strip on our casual date night stroll to jersey city, so I anticipate making the 30 min walk from Hoboken more often- and knowing we have the Archer in our back pocket for starting a date night right is comforting, to say the least.
It's amazing how a space can completely transform. If you used to go to Box Sushi, The Archer is a totally revamped space and feel. Hipster, homey, dark and woodsy – The Archer fits perfectly with the new ambience taking over downtown Jersey City.
Stopped in with a group of 6 for a Saturday night drink and waited for a table instead of staying at the bar, which was a bit crowded. There's kind of an awkward unused area in front of the bar but maybe they'll add some standing high tables.
Waited about 30 minutes for a booth. Everyone ordered drinks, which were really great (wine, beer, fancy cocktails) albeit a little pricey for the cocktails.
Now for the food. We ordered some cheese to start and got the Roquefort blue cheese, which came out on a slice of a tree trunk. The cheese was served with bread which was unfortunately not real Jersey Italian bread but was instead some unfortunate soft wonder bread white stuff… The spicy honey dip that came with it was a great touch but come on! This is NJ, they need to up their bread game.
We also had the (can't remember what it was called) plate with portobello mushroom & arugula – it wasn't bad, it wasn't good – it was a bit strange. The pomme frites were great though!
So in the future I'll probably just be stopping in to the Archer for some drinks – it's a super cute place!
Ambiance: place is verrrry dark. Nice wood layout, recommend grabbing a booth.
Staff: The guys working there are courteous and pay attention: example: both restrooms were occupied so I went back to my drink cuz why wait when you can.. well, drink more, and one of them indicated to me when it was open. Just simple observation + consideration, kinda shit you dump S/O's for not being able to do lol.
Food: Duck Poutine was a savory and satisfying mix of happiness and flavor in my mouth. Deeeefinitely get it. Literally the perfect snack for drinking time. The cheese mostly melts down, so you have this gooey ooeyness of cheesey gravy to go alone with the nicely seasoned, proper cut fries.
Ordered some pork and cheese plate as well which was decent. The standout was the jam actually. Seriously. The jam was the jam (hyuk hyuk). Whomever made that jam should have some of it sellable in little jars at the bar. I'd buy that shit. Not kidding, msg me, I'll buy some. As another reviewer mentioned, the bread is woefully soft and quite uninspired. You need some bruscare or some shiz. Step your bread game up.
Elk sliders. Meh, big let down. Would definitely skip this. Flavor muted, seemed to be served warm not hot, just very blah and woulda prefer the fries that come in the poutine as the side starch.
Drinks: The drink menu is quite small, which makes me kinda sad. 40 winks was very tasty and still packed a boozy punch. Went off menu a few times, nothing every really quite hit the mark, but some came close.
Overall, wouldn't rate this in my top mixo bars, but I think it's a solid bar with a lot of positives and that poutine I'd def come back for.
This is a lovely place for date night. Came here on a friday night around 9pm and didn't need to wait at all. The place was full but not overpacked.
They seem to have an interesting mix of cocktails that they had put a lot of thought and effort into. I had the swizzle drink, while my date had the tequila based one. While the presentation looked lovely, i dont think they tasted that great. i wasn't too eager to finish them off.
For food, all of their dishes came in relatively smaller portions, even when ordering off the main entrees/larger plates. i had the wild boar sloppy joe, while my date had the smoked bison, and we shared the mushroom spatzle. I loved my wild boar sloppy joe and the mushroom spatzle. I thought it was super flavorful although i dont think i would be able to tell if it was just regular old pork. My date also enjoyed his bison but had the same thought that it tasted pretty much exactly like regular beef. maybe our tastebuds just aren't sophisticated enough to taste the difference? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
overall, it was a nice place for date night, we'll keep it in our rotation, but probably stick to regular drinks instead of their specialty cocktails.
The former 'Box' transformed into this trendy, hunting-lodge inspired cocktail bar last year. The dimly lit space features soft music, a 'roaring' LED fireplace, and a charcuterie bar (complete with slicer!). Not a huge surprise to find the place packed at 9pm on a Saturday night.
A massive selection of whiskies can be found and the bartenders take great care in their craft: no matter if you choose a simple gin and tonic or one of their speciality cocktails, you'll get a solid (if pricey) drink. I went with the Yacht Club Punch: a potent mix of white rum, lime juice, grenadine, and absinthe over crushed ice. All of the flavours mingled well, without coming off as too sweet or overpowered by the absinthe.
I'll come back to try some of the game influenced meats.
Best cocktail bar in JC hands down. This is a perfect place if you would like to come enjoy a cocktail in a fun cool place. The staff was very attentive and even the bouncer outside was very personable and helpful.
Try any of the cocktails and you will be pleased. Perfect for a date night.
