Our days of eating out seem to have ended now that our family has expanded, but we recently were able to visit Sevan restaurant for a baptismal lunch. I'm tempted to give it five stars since this was one of our first meals alone, but the truth is that Sevan is a fine choice for a casual meal but nothing more.
A little digression on the various kinds of Armenian restaurants. Sevan is an Armenian restaurant that has its roots more in Armenia the country than Armenian food as interpreted in the middle east. Thus, the mezze, although aping that produced by Lebanese or Syrian Armenians, just isn't as good you might expect. The dozens of small plates you might get at a real middle eastern place simply aren't here. Not their fault. And the mezze that is available is competent, but standard stuff – Cortas canned hummous and baba ghanouj (I think) gussied up to look like something more.
Having said all that, the restaurant is pleasant and abundant, the rich, buttery basmati rice that accompanies the tasty (and well priced) kebab main dishes is spectacular in the way of many Persian and Armenian restaurants and the service is unfussy but good. If you have a ken for some kebab and rice, and happen to be in Bayside or Long Island, I wouldn't think twice about coming here. You'll be treated well.
