More like a 3.5 rating. I don't have much experience with authentic thai food (I hope to have that corrected soon) but I do like the flavor of their tom yum soup and their thai iced tea. Their nam tok salad is so flavorful and delicious. I live in the neighborhood so it's very convenient for delivery. It's a little hard to find the storefront if you try to dine in because there isn't a sign outside that has the name of the restaurant but there is a light up sign that says open. It's a very nondescript door but just look for that open sign.

Came home from school and did not want to go to far for food since it has been really cold out lately. I have been wanting to try out this place since I walk pass it very often. The restaurant can easily be missed if you are not physically looking out for it. I walked in and the restaurant was pretty small, but classy. I felt like it could have been a small romantic-ish restaurant in the East Village. There was only one waitress and she was very tentative and sincere.
My boyfriend and I ordered the calamari and curry puff for appetizers. I ordered a thai ice tea and the chicken pad thai and my boyfriend ordered the curry with potato, carrots, onions, and chicken with jasmine rice on the side. Their portions are not huge, it was perfect for me since I usually have leftovers. The portions are smaller, but the prices are around the same as other thai restaurants (I'm not sure how I feel about that). However, the food comes out quick.
The calamari was typical, nothing special. The curry puff was really good though! They were huge and full of fillings. I highly recommend them! The chicken pad thai was meh. I did not really like how it tasted, but my boyfriend thought it was good. I thought it was sort of bland and did not have much flavors. BUT the curry my boyfriend had was delicious. I would have ate his plate of food instead, but I did not want to eat all his food. Haha. Overall, the food were really fresh. It was definitely made on the spot and not in big batches like other restaurants. Their thai ice tea is really good as well. I can actually taste the tea and it is not overly sweet. I will come back to try other dishes.
The meal actually got better as I went along. Thai iced tea was perfectly sweet to start with. The papaya salad lacked depth. It should be sweet and salty and bitter and spicy all at once. It seemed like just a lime juice dressing. The sriracha noodles were served with ground chicken in a slightly spicy sauce. I enjoyed them but again the flavor profile needed a boost. The highlight was the pumpkin custard, served warm, making the sweet custard and caramel sauce perk up. Ask for this because the sweet waitress told me that dessert was ice cream and banana roll. I asked about mango sticky rice and she said "Yes we have that too". I then asked about Thai custard and she said yes again. Then I asked if it was with pumpkin and got another yes. Strange- Why not tell me Thai desserts first?
I have been to this place well over 10 times and I noticed that they have their good days and bad. My husband usually orders the beef pad see ew and I have ordered pretty much everything on this menu.
Some days the food here is very salty and others it's perfectly seasoned. On the good days, the food is great!! I would recommend getting the basil fried rice and the tom yum soup. These two dishes seem to be consistently tasty.
Service is welcoming and the food comes out pretty quick.
Copying and pasting my review from "Bangkok Thai House" because I came here after it was changed to "Bay Thai".
So a consolidation has been made with the location and name!
Being someone who loves Thai food and can eat Thai food whenever possible, I was very disappointed with this place. At around 7:15, it was pretty empty except for our big group. It was cold so I opted for the tom yum noodle soup. My friends got noodles and other things. Some of us requested it to be extra spicy.
When we got our food, the disappointment started visually. Our portions were pretty small. I'm used to a decently-sized portion whenever I eat Thai, and for prices that are the same, I couldn't help but feel a little cheated. But trying to give this place the benefit of the doubt, I hoped this place made up for it in flavor. But nope. My tom yum soup tasted ehhhh. It wasn't spicy AT ALL. For those who've never had it, and even to those who have, tom yum soup is by default at least a mild-medium spicy level. Not this. This was just hot (temperature) sour soup. Not to say that it tasted bad, because it didn't…but it wasn't meeting my expectations of what tom yum soup was. My friends who asked for noodles extra spicy didn't get anything turned up, either. It was just…noodles.
There was only one waitress. By 9pm, the place was getting pretty packed, and the poor lady was running around. She didn't come to check up on us more than once, and we had to ask for waters and refills constantly.
The only good thing about this place is probably that the decor is stunning.
I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't deliver. There are literally thousands of other Thai places in NYC so I probably won't be back. Sorry not sorry.
