Wow. If nothing else, this place gets my vote for sexiest restaurant in Harlem. I happened to be walking by and saw the waitress setting up.
They were either not really ready to open or forgot that they didn't unlock the door. In their defense (because I kinda already like the ambiance) they just opened Saturday so their menú and some of their beers are not readily available. Dont be like the couple who walked in after me and pretty much asked for every thing that was not being offered yet.
I had the Little Bamboo cocktail and the Harlem roll which is black pepper tuna, lettuce, and cream cheese, topped with soy caramel. Their signature namesake cocktail did not disappoint in any way. As a matter of fact, I wish I didn't have an appointment to run to after wards or I would probably have overstayed my welcome. (As if!)
The sushi took a little bit of time to come ie. I was almost completely done with my drink. But it was perfect timing. That roll will haunt me, it was so good. The soy caramel was mind blowing and unexpectedly delicious. The sushi was fresh and delicate. The seaweed wrap was a bit chewy but gave it texture. I am definitely going to return to ensure the standards are high every time. Thus I will hold out my 5th Star. Yum!
Across the street from my apartment!! This French run , and operated JapOnese experience in Harlem is the quintessence of NYC eatery experience. They have a full bar with creative drinks so it's more of a fun restaurant than a "sushi bar" experience. The decor and vibe is very cool like the shoji screens as windows, sexy, happening. This spot is becoming one of the good Harlem social spots….where the cool crowd comes now to eat if you are getting bored of the red rooster, further up, and to speak some French.
Two words: happy hour. All of their non-specialty sushi rolls (6 pieces) and well drinks for $5 each. And even with those prices, nothing was skimpy or watered down. The sushi was pretty decent, I went with the yellowtail scallion, eel avocado, and spicy crawfish. While the yellowtail scallion was alright, the eel avocado was good, but the spicy crawfish roll was great. It was a very interesting take on a sushi roll and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Even though I stuck to the happy hour rolls, I took a peek at the specialty rolls on the menu, and the descriptions alone were mouthwatering. I need to go back to try a few! The drinks were good, especially for being happy hour drinks. I had a mojito and caipirinha, and though they ran out of cachaça for the caipirinha, the bartender informed us and used a different rum that tasted mostly the same.
The service was good, there were a couple of missteps but they did seem short on staff. I think with more hands on deck things would run more smoothly. Overall, I enjoyed Little Bamboo, and would definitely come back for another meal.
