“The ambiance of this particular location of Tomo is a little bit nicer than the one located in Jackson Heights, which makes me a bit keener on coming to this one in the first place.”

Tomo is my go-to place in Queens for my sushi fix. One of my best friends introduced me to this place earlier in the year. I haven't been here since April 2015 and my most recent visit was this past Saturday. I met up with a friend for dinner who was visiting from out of town. I usually get the 3 rolls combo for $10 and it's a great deal! My favorite rolls are the salmon tempura roll and the spicy tuna with crunch roll. I'm able to finish all 3 rolls in one sitting – surprisingly and I would be pretty full afterwards. I also tried the salmon teriyaki lunch special bento box before – pretty good as well.
Overall, I haven't had any problems with this place. Great place to come catch up with friends.
Super cheap sushi fix.
$1 sushi/sashimi
3 rolls for $10.
$2.50 handrolls
When I pay a dollar for a sushi and don't die afterwards, place deserves at a bare minimum 3 stars. Throw on the fact that tomo also offers uni, ebi, scallop on the dollar menu (this rarely occurs at dollar sushi restaurants), they get 4 stars. As with all dollar sushi spots, avoid slow days like Monday or Tuesday. Fish quality ain't the best, but this place is incredibly busy so they go through fish quickly. This guarantees fresh fish. Fresh poor quality fish, but fresh. For a buck all you can ask for is fresh anyway.
Cheap sake too. Same box ozeki sake at every other sushi place goes for at least 10 bucks, 7 here. Handrolls are made with generous cuts of sashimi (2 thick slices).
Service is ok. Wait staff takes your order and bring it out. Gotta ask for everything else, ain't no one checking in on you.
Also order the sushi in a set number when ordering alot i.e. 3 eel, 3 salmon, 3 ebi etc, if you order 2 of this, 5 of that, 3 of this, i got news for you, you're not gonna get your full order. Sushi chefs here are either woeful counters or want to cheat you out of a few dollars….
3 rolls for $9.99? Sure!!! Don't mind if I do!!!
As for the flavor and sushi, it's not all that… I love the price but the taste is lacking. Avoid the Philadelphia roll unless you love the extra smoke flavor. Idk what they did with it but it was extremely smokey when we ordered.
The udon had a very strong mushroom taste. If you love mushrooms, go for it!
The staff was very nice and they were very attentive! avoid sitting next to the fish tank when it's super cold… A whoosh of cold wind comes by every time the door opens!
I was drawn in by the 3.5 star review but I don't think I'll return. First of all, I ordered a Bento Box Lunch w/ Sushi. It came with only 5 SMALL pieces of sushi. I don't care for California Roll so I asked for spicy tuna instead. In most places, this is a $1 add on. No big deal. Here, it was $3. Really? Decent miso and salad accompanied.
Standard good cheap sushi. They have 3 rolls for $10 special. There's a good amount of rolls to choose from for the 3 rolls special. Plus they have $1 sashimi and sushi pieces. This is my to go place for when I want sushi but not pay so much. I usually get take out and sometimes they will be wrong about estimate time that the food will be ready and I end up having to wait like 10 mins extra. Not a big deal but I would like to get my food by the time I get there so I don't need to wait.
I've gotten take out a few times, it's the same as the one in East Elmhurst. They're cheap. 3 rolls special for $10…it's nothing that's extraordinary, but if you want a quick sushi fix on a budget…
The rice will usually fall apart, but what do you expect at these prices. Fish is bland since it's not the freshest, but once again it shouldn't be a shock. Average sushi, low prices.
This is prob a decent place to introduce someone who's never had sushi before, since the fish is simpler and slightly bland. If you really like soy sauce and wasabi, you will barely know what you're eating, but I normally eat my sushi as is. My mom doesn't like sushi or sashimi, but she loves any roll that contains cooked fish/seafood, but she can't really tell once she's dipped it in her soy sauce/wasabi mix. Tomo is perfect for her, she likes California, shrimp tempura, etc. My father is slightly more adventurous now… But I wouldn't order sushi or sashimi here even for beginners though I'm pretty sure he'd be fine with it. I tried it once, and I just didn't like it. For lower quality fish, I'd rather have it hidden in my rolls.
I prefer the sushi place at the mall, not the ones that sit around on the conveyor belt, but the ones made to order. However, very basic selection — typical plain rolls, but they roll it tightly, slightly fresher.
Regardless, Tomo is a decent place for a quick sushi fix. I can't comment on service since it's normally for take out, but I'm pretty sure I've eaten in at least once when they first opened.
I come here a lot with my friends whenever we feel like treating ourselves to some sushi. After a couple of years of coming here one of the things that I've noticed is the size of their sushi pieces are getting smaller and smaller, which sucks because we have to spend more money just to get full. Their quality of sushi is okay, I wouldn't say it's cheaper but it doesn't knock your socks off at the same time.
I normally order their nigiri a la carte ($1 each which was a great deal until they got smaller). The rice on their nigiri isn't too bad, I can taste the sweetness of the vinegar but the texture of the rice doesn't resemble that of Japanese rice. Their rolls/pieces have gotten smaller, and that's affected the amount of filling inside each piece. I normally get the eel avocado, spicy tuna, yellow tail and the regular tuna pieces but I haven't been able to enjoy them as much as I used to because of their size.
I know they're trying to save more food by doing this but it's had a negative impact on my experience here. Still, they offer pretty affordable deals here but there are other places out there that will give you more bang for your buck.
1 The rice is not Japanese rice
2 The rice contains no vinegar
3 The soy sauce is not Japanese soy sauce
