Excellent bagels and huge variety to choose from! Probably the best I've ever had! The bagel are super FRESH and so, they do not toast them.
This is not only about the bagel itself, it is also about the filling! Everything is YUMMY!
We had sesame bagel with tuna salad, the Stuto and Stella both with plain bagel… And wanna come back to try the rest!
The restaurant has plenty of space at the back with tables and chairs, too.
Yes, as a yuppie myself (don't deny it), I trust Yelp with my dear life-every decision I make, from the food I eat to the movies I watch, needs to be certified "fresh". Hopefully fresh bagels and quality spreads were something that I would've encountered here. Yes, fresh. Quality? Perhaps. Price, ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I am really confused as to why these bagels are highly touted.
I walked in with $20 on hand, got their famous bagel and a couple 1/4lbs of its spread, and I came out begging someone to give me 25 cents to cover my cost (It's only a cash only join). How on earth is that possible?!
Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else for a real NY bagel. Whether this place is considered gourmet or not, the prices do not justify its cost.
OK guys, listen up! This is a famous bagel place, so make sure you come here with a plan and your plan is to try the best bagels in town. Cash only place, so go get your cash and enter. Dress down place, so forget all your heels and makeup and must look hungry. Try to come earlier than 9 AM because right after 9 the place starts to roll. Bagels are hubby's favorite but the one we like is bialy, which they don't have. So we tried "everything bagel". There was a line before the cash register but do not worry because there's a server taking your order while you're in line to the counter/cash register. Order you coffee up front at the cash register and they prepare it fast. There're about 4-5 little tables and chairs and 3-4 high chairs by the back window. I ordered 2 sunny side eggs with multigrain and hubby ordered 2 over easy with everything bagel and some potato. Hubby said there's something in the potato he's not crazy about, I tried it. I think they put some herb that's a bit different. I loved my multigrain bread although this is a bagel place. I also ordered to go everything bagel with lox spread. So I did enjoy the bagel to go yay! The server was quick and he's so understanding when I said hubby's parking but need to order soonest he comes in so that I don't have to lose the line. More people kept coming after we placed the order. We were lucky to be eating there in less than half hour and was out the door after. I saw the area where the bagels were made. Best bagels, no joke!
Honestly, not really sure why there's so much hype here. My family and I traveled here to experience the magic and we were not impressed.
First off, the gluten free bagel is definitely an Udi's bagel and WAY overpriced. They charge an obscene amount. For example, I got egg and veggie cream cheese which cost $4.50 on a regular bagel. But if you order gluten free, they charge you $3.00 ON TOP of the $4.50 instead of adding what difference between the regular and GF bagel. The regular bagel is $1.25 so technically they should be charging an extra $1.75, instead of the $3.00. So that was annoying.
We ordered a total of 7 bagels and waited about 25 minutes to get our order during an OFF PEAK time (around 11:00am). I cannot imagine how long that would have taken had we been there during a busy time.
Honestly, it was not worth the hype and I will not be returning.
Last summer, I spent an entire Sunday morning in Manhattan looking for a gluten-free bagel, and there was nowhere–nowhere!–on this entire island that had any on the shelves! So this time, I decided, you know what? I don't care if I have to travel to the moon for God's sake, I'm going to find. this. bagel. I wanted a homemade gluten-free bagel and I *really* wanted a baker's dozen of them to take home so I could live in carb bliss forevs.
My journey brought me to Tompkins Bagel in the East Village, a nook of Manhattan that I had never been to, and as I'm moving West this summer I wanted to scratch a few things off my East Coast Bucket List™. A bagel and lox that I could savor without my insides writhing just sounded like the right way to end the trip.
Okay, okay, let's get to the actual review.
Customer Service: I was not acknowledged by the cashier when I approached them in a friendly manner asking how are you and when I thanked them, and the person who took my order was short with me. There was a sign that says "cash only", which is out-of-sight until you finally make it up to the register. If you have to step out of line to use the ATM, you're doing the wait all over again… but from what I hear, the staff was overworked, so I accept that it was probably a one-off thing.
Pricing: An iced tea and a tennis ball-sized bagel and cream cheese cost me over $9 (plus ATM fees)! I found this pricing to be steep for what I got, and I could have gotten three regular, beautiful, glutenous bagels for what I spent on the gluten-free one. But then I would have gotten sick, and that's no fun.
Food: The cream cheese was pretty awesome–scallion cream cheese, yes! The bagel was alright… just very small, but it's also the only fresh gluten free bagel I've had, so I have nothing to compare it to.
The gluten-free bagel and lox combo remains on the Bucket List™. It was out of my price range.
I'm not really a bagel person. They give me serious carb crashes. This place wasn't bad though. Not the best bagel I've had, but definitely not the worst. I had a cinnamon raisin one & a roobois tea to accompany it.
The way they take orders is weird. In the back, they take your food order and up front they take your drink order. I don't like ordering my meal in unnecessary increments at different locations. I found that to be a waste of time, which was extremely annoying. It should just be one central location to order from in the eatery, not multiple ones. And mind you, it was on a weekday. Only 15 customers total in the place.
All in all okay. Took care of my hunger.
So, somehow I've lived in the city for 2 years and just came here now?? Wow, was I missing out. These truly are some of the best bagels I've ever had. I came a Monday morning before work and it was quick and delicious: perfection. I got a wheat everything bagel (my go-to) with two eggs. The bagel was soft, warm and so loaded with all the "everything" you would want. The eggs were also delicious and definitely not those classic plastic-y eggs you get at so many bagel spots. I can't wait to come back and perhaps try some of the more classic tompkins square items like the sweet cream cheeses. Please come here, it makes Mondays 1000 times better (trust me). Also? Can't beat the price. Just a few bucks for a filling and delicious breakfast on the go.
Just got a simple blueberry bagel with almond butter but the menu is super extensive with tons of different spreads, breakfast menu, specialty sandwiches etc. It's a busy place but the line moves quickly. One of the guys making bagels was extremely friendly asking if it was my firet time there and welcomed me. Loved that, and also cash only!!
